Real wax LED candles
Can't beat that real wax feel, even if what's burning isn't actually a glowing wick, but an active LED. No, it's not
the first LED candle we've seen, but it's the only
one we know of that comes encased in wax not intended for burning, as it runs on AAs, and will keep it going strong for
about a hundred flickering hours. But if you're a dude, like any candle, it's probably more than you'll want to spend —
$20, in this case, and for what? Barely even a thick oily scent.

If you really wanted one of these you could probably make it in about 3 minutes with the electrical scraps you have around the house.
" The candles get warmed by the light and so release the fragrance when the wax gets softened." -- popgadget
"Real wax, real scent, no flame." -- brookstone
did you even read the article before posting??
I will only get one if it comes with a clapper.
Otherwise it seems useless and only semi-cool on the geeky scale.
I saw these at Brookstone last week. They do have a (subtle) scent, and they turn on and off with a simple wave over the top of them. And $20 is the same price as a large yankee candle, which can only be burned once.
Would be nice if it flickered, though.
Oh, thank you google adwords: http://www.coolsafetyproducts.com/site/898652/page/575590
I have had on of these (in the uk) for about a year now. Its pretty nice and has an rainbow effect where it goes through all the colors. The bad thing about my model is that it uses a crappy propriatory battery which sucks and is very expensive for what it is.
it does flicker by the way, but it uses 4 AA batteries and only gets 100 hours before the batteries need replacing, cmon, seriously i would expect more out of a low light led source
anyway, here is the product description since so many readers keep questioning its features
"Real wax, real scent, no flame. Now you can enjoy the ambience and warmth of a scented wax candle—without the flame. Slowly wave your hand over the candle and the motion-detecting sensor turns the candle’s LED lights on or off. 6" pillar candle is made of 100% real wax. Dual LED lights simulate the gentle flicker and light of a candlewick. LED bulbs last 100,000 hours of continuous use. Two-hour auto shutoff. Uses four AA batteries (not included) —for 100 hours of battery life. Much safer around kids and pets than ordinary candles."
So, wait a second. If the LEDs melt the wax to release the scent (do LEDs even get that warm?), won't the candle eventually melt down like a real one?
The wax doesn't melt, I don't think LEDs even get warm enough on contact to melt wax.
Oh, and it didn't look like they flickered. but then I wasn't in a darkened room.
100 hours on the batteries is pretty good I would think, especially with the auto-shutoff. Now if I could get it to tell me when I had new email, that would be cool.
I actually work at Brookstone so I know the deal on the candles. They're actually a big seller, believe it or not.
The lights do flicker, just like a real candle. They have diffrent scents and they are strong, just like a real candle. They are made of real wax, just like a real candle.
It's just a hell of a lot safer then actual flames. Parents get them all the time.
These look great. I picked up the "Candela" a similar product that used a lithium-ion internal battery that recharged when placed on an inductive plate. They were awesome, but the battery life was stupid. They'd last a couple hours at first, but within a few months it was down to less than an hour, and eventually they wouldn't charge at all. The replacement batteries were as expensive as the units themselves, but they were really cool.
These, running off of AA, seem like a much better solution. I mean, you can always just use ni-cad AAs, can't you?
