Level 3 to support DIRECTV HD

dtv

This answers a lot of questions. Many people were starting to wonder where DIRECTV was going to get the bandwidth to roll out its local HDTV stations. Well, with Level 3 in the picture, what is left to wonder? Level 3 is going to provide bandwidth and data center solutions to carry the local HD stations.

Level 3 has been working with DIRECTV sinse 1999 with their standard definition signals, so it only makes sense to invite them to the HD party. The local signal will travel on Level 3's backbone for rebroadcast via satellite to DIRECTV’s customer base. Without the high-speed backbone, DIRECTV would not be able to take the massive amount of data that HD requires and get it to their customers. DIRECTV plans on using the bandwidth for its current local stations and 15 additional markets.

Whatever it takes to get HD local stations to more people is great step forward for high definition.
