Alienware Area-51 5400 all-in-one PC
Alienware is due to announce this one sometime on Thursday, so we don't have a lot of details yet. But we can tell you that it's an all-in-one PC with a 17-inch widescreen LCD display, Bluetooth keyboard, maximum 2GB RAM, integrated camera (guess how we figured that one out!), maximum 160GB hard drive and will sell for "under $2,000." Which, at least for Alienware, makes this a budget system.

Fa shizzle, Yo!
Stu L Tissimus @ Jan 5th 2006 8:25AM
Knowing Alienware, for a price that's under $2000, it probably has integrated graphics.

So kinda like the iMac G5 in black with a HUGE alienware logo in the front (does it have to be so big?) Is that a trackpad on the keyboard?
YourTechSupport @ Jan 5th 2006 8:31AM
It's nice to see Alienware looking out for the entry-level High-End market.
I can imagine many a LAN gamer busting these out. When they finally scrimp together their lunch monies, Idunno how they're gonna cram five people around one instance of Quake 4, but whatevs.
JTB @ Jan 5th 2006 8:43AM
Obviously they like their logo
Tim @ Jan 5th 2006 8:46AM
Wow, that keyboard looks cool. I hope we can buy these on their own, looks much better than the MS MCE keyboard.
eviltwin @ Jan 5th 2006 8:49AM
So, kinda like an ugly lower spec iMac for more money and without the nice OS. I'm SOLD!
Pip @ Jan 5th 2006 9:16AM
Yeah really, this thing is ugly as sin. All black?
I like my computers BLACK. LIKE MY SOUL.
I'll be over in the corner being all goth and slitting my wrists.

Why would anyone want to be permanently stuck to a 17" LCD monitor? No one I know wants a 17" - everyone I know is going to 19" and bigger. I have a 20" iMac, and even I dream of a day that I can get a 24" or 26" for the same price.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if it didn't have the god-awful ALIENWARE scrawled across the front of it.
They should have just left the little alien head there and be done with it. Of course, it's likely they originally DID do that, and they got called out as making it look like an evil iMac doppelganger.
They couldn't have won either way.
"The logo is too big!"
or
"The Alien head is a big rip off of the Apple logo on the front of the iMac!"
The keyboard looks promising, at least. Would have been better with dual stick/pad.

It definitely has a bit of that retro 1980's-esque look too it. I'm sure if I love it or hate it.

The keyboard looks awesome for controlling a Mac Mini Media Center from the couch.
abhas1 @ Jan 5th 2006 11:10AM
Ahh...always nice to see an alienware...
iceman @ Jan 5th 2006 12:23PM
i love the keyboared
what kind of graphic card does it have ?
iceman @ Jan 5th 2006 12:28PM
p.s hope they bring out a 19inch screen version
Billy K @ Jan 5th 2006 1:23PM
Come on, somebody complain about the price! Complain about the 2GB RAM limit. Complain about something! If this were a Mac you'd all be fit about the crappy specs and high price.
Oh, wait - it's an Alienware. It's a "gaming machine," so the regular rules of whining don't apply.
Whatevs.
VQH @ Jan 5th 2006 1:55PM
Forget about the computer! I'm more interested in the keyboard.
Leo @ Jan 5th 2006 3:16PM
Hey i worship alienware as much as the average joe does but does anyone see any resembelence between any other computer. http://www.niquille.com/wp-content/DSC08898.JPG
It looks exacly the same. Don't get me wrong i sltill like it alot but EVERY STUPID COMPANY STOP COPYING APPLE IF U CAN'T DESIGN UR OWN STUFF U DON'T HAVE TO STEAL OTHER IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!
Tonicboy @ Jan 5th 2006 4:06PM
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Entry-level computer buyers wouldn't like it because they are bombarded daily with low-cost PCs a quarter the price. Enthusiasts would hate it because these types of all-in-ones never have enough upgrade options. Gamers need a bigger (and better) screen. Computer novices with money to burn would rather buy a fancier component system. I predict a complete bomb. Way to go Alienware.
Steven Sloan @ Jan 5th 2006 4:07PM
cool keyboard, though I do wish the touchpad was front and center...it makes using key+click combos easier...oh wait, i mistook that for a mac...sorry, simple doesnt matter
Liam @ Jan 5th 2006 4:31PM
the keyboard/mouse looks like it was taken out of a laptop. Maybe they had some left over parts of laptops and said "I wonder how we can get rid of these."
jeff @ Jan 5th 2006 5:49PM
so it's sorta like an iMac... that doesn't suck at videogames, but does suck at everything else, huh?
Raider @ Jan 5th 2006 6:49PM
It looks like a Sony Bravia XBR LCD with a camera on top and Alienware slapped on the front. Somewhere the computer is slapped on the back.
They did one thing right, which Apple has definately got wrong. They have a wireless keyboard shipped with the computer. However, Apple does has a nice interface, Front Row, controller, the Apple Remote, but I still want wireless keyboards standard when I buy these days. Especially when almost all Macs sold now already have Bluetooh already inside.
There is one thing I must say though. It does look way better than the monsterous Sony all-in-ones they make.
#7 the iMac painted by ColorWarePC does look really nice in all black, especially since it's a high gloss. Think of it like a big black iPod video.
#11 The Belkin MediaPilot is not a bad choice for controlling the Mac mini. The quick controls on the top are really easy for controlling iTunes while doing something else. True the base is a little big and there is a little adjustment. However I find it quite comfortable. Plus it works up to 30 feet in my house. It's not so big that I have an Airport Express in my bathroom and I take the keyboard to the bathroom with me. Listen to my iTunes and control it from the can. Its all about the toilet entertainment, isn't it?
It's funny how the most of the PC iMac clones or Mac mini clones are that much more expensive than the actual Apple units. Isn't it supposed to be that Apple is an overpriced computer company? Which some things are, but still, I thought a comparable PC would be cheaper (FOR THE SAME SIZE & SPECS ( I'm not talking about the big bulky Sunday special eMachines)).
BTW, Jeff your post gave me a slight laugh.
