Apple announcing "fun new products" next Tuesday
We've seen a lot of spurious invitations for new
product announcements from Apple this month, but we've got confirmation that the latest one making the rounds is real.
As usual, Stevie J. is playing the hype game; this time, he's asking us to join him for the unveiling of some "fun
new products" at the Cupertino event. So, what'll it be? The touchscreen video iPod? Intel-powered
iBooks? We don't know for sure -- but we will be there to find out (which means, of course, that this had better be
real, or we're gonna have a very hard time explaining why we just charged a plane ticket to our corporate card).

I hate apple and will always be a apple hater, APPLE SUCKS!
What are you talking about? I love apple, but I don't go around hating PCs! Think of the old days circa 1998-2002. In 1997, the battery of the PowerBook G3 had a button to tell how much battery life was left in the battery. 1997! Then copycat Dell copied them probably in 2004 and now my friends piece of junk Dell craptop, I mean laptop, has it too! And they had the fastest Notebook in 1997. They had some of the world's most cheapest computers back then too! There a little pricer now, but compared to all in one PCs macs are cheaper. Apple changed the world with the iMac G3 in 1998. They introduced the cheapest consumer notebook in 2003 with the iBook G4 at only $999! They had the first computer that had graphics in 1984 before Windows! And the Operating System Mac OS X is far more intuitive and better than windows! Innovations like this make me want to use Apple. Even if other people copied Apple's stuff and put it in PCs, I still want to use Apple. Apple is a better company, it has practicly cult of it. There is no "cult or the PC" people are always impressed when you buy a mac. Even if it's a 9 year old Beige G3! I don't hate PCs, I just get annoyed when PC manufractures and Microsoft copy things and when apple haters talk trash. Sure I could sit here all night and say why Apple is better and all of there innovations, but I don't have 20 years to do so!
I just got a new 5G iPod. If he phases them out, I'm so returning it.
Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... Touchscreen Video iPod... pllllllleeeeeeeeeeeaseeee!!!!!!
Hnh. Is that the actual invite pictured?
Apple knows marketing like few other companies.
I'm hoping for an 80gb ipod with video. Up the size and keep the price the same!
More than likely tho, it won't be anything special. They've kinda lost their edge lately (and I'm an Apple lover too.)
The apple website has a countdown to the billionth song on iTunes...but isn't it more of a count-up?
My money goes on the Intel iBooks. I don't think they'll do a new iPod quite yet.
iFun new iProducts for your iLife iStyle.
Its probably some keychain for showing off iPhotos, and can sync with your iPod photo/video/nano.
Sounds like a fun product to me.
Otherwise its some tiny shuffle. w0wZ3rz
It'll be a iBoom box.. man apple really got on the iPod accessories train late... they could have totally raked it in.
My guess is on an ipod boombox. period
Maybe a widescreen, touch screen iPod video
I don't think this is the full-fledged video iPod announcement. I think that would be much bigger... at a bigger venue, off-site and with more notice. (And a more interesting graphic.)
This seems like the iPod boombox or updated Airport Express type of announcement. Why not throw in a few more Intel-based devices as well.
I dont think it will be something thaaat big
Maybe I'm wrong, but don't all the Apple supporters get tired of hearing all the crazy predictions about what is coming out next? People aim so high that when Apple finally announces something, it inevitably falls short of the lofty predictions that people were hoping for.
Relax with the predictions and just appreciate whatever it is that they reveal.
80 gig ipod with video - fun fun fun!!!
be a bit more optimistic - i'm thinking touch screen ipod video that also plays games (psp rival?) that can be downloaded from the itunes music/video/games store. Interface a bit like the nintendo ds but woy more stylish!
If only aaahhh ;)
what happend to the "special event" that was supposed to be held tomorrow the 22nd !!!???
I have access to an inside source and he has told me that they are going to reveal that iChat is totally lame and that the iSight i bought to work with it doesn't work anymore and that i should shoot myself for trusting them! Can you believe this, I can't iChat Video with my friends in europe and better yet, I can't connect to my dad who is in upstate NY and i am in NYC. Apple is really starting to suck big piles of rhinoceros dung.
I'd take a guess at a Media Center Mac Mini (maybe Intel?) Partly because everyone thought that's what they were going to announce at the last event, and partly because I want one.
PDA PDA PDA PDA. I really want a Palm TX but if apple do make a pda how cool would that be. I know they wont make a pda but man I wish they did. If not a touchscreen video ipod wont be bad will it. PDA PDA PDA or touchscreen video ipod if not ill settle for a boombox.
hopefully it'll be something cool, i doubt it'll be the new video ipod (if there is one) but we can always hope. Maybe it'll be some apps because they dont have to many big apps that they make for non professionals else then the iLife and iWork. It could be a suffle update, Who knows (else then Steve J.).
irobot
Yeah what happened to the 22nd? Thats my bday too... No gifts from Apple? How dare they!
Apple needs to release something that can compete with http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?CategoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComputers_SZSeries&ProductSKU=VGNSZ160P%2fC&TabName=specs&var2=
Has anyone not invited tried to RSVP to the email address on the invite?
jta
Why does clicking on the pic link to a fake invite contest?
Apple is switching to Windows
you know, that calender reminds me of something else that has a calender, a PDA! but no, it wont be a pda....
Wait, Why do iCare? iDont use iCrap
I'll make a deal with you. I live 10 minutes away from Cupertino. You fed-ex me that invite, I do the report and save your corporate card from being charged up with plane tickets. I'll do hands-on impressions and pictures and all that jazz. LEt me know.
Am hoping for a Intel core duo Mac-mini. I think it's about time, they roll this out!
iPDA is probably not so out of the question as some folks might think. Or an iPod with PDA functions.
Maybe even iPhone... But probably the intellification of some the Mac line (mini, iBook) is most likely.
Expect no big thing. probably is an iBook announcement (not release) because the education market buying season is coming an they need schools to know what is coming.
That and some minor releases like an ipod boombox, and how the new prodcuts have been a success.
IT WON'T BE the TABLET nor the VIDEO IPOD those will come later, the tablet who knows, the Video iPod will come wen the new home entrainment platform is released. Maybe April 1.
iGame :O

Whatever it is it will iSuck and the battery will only last for 18 months....
My guess is an iBook. My reason...all of the rebates out there for the MacBook Pro have valid purchase dates ending, yea you guessed it February 28th. Apple may have received enough pre-order sales for the MacBook Pro that they now feel they can release the Intel ibook without canabalizing sales. Sure, it could be a coincidence, but it's more fun to think it's not.
I recently visited half a dozen mac stores trying to find a mini in stock. Couldn't find one. Staff at one store says they're not getting their order, so they think it's 'cause an upgrade is coming. Intel mini is my guess.
I hope it's not an Ipod Boombox. Accesories are anti-climatic.
they're releasing the iPod touchscreen on the 29th.
Honestly speaking, I don't think it would be a new iPod. Maybe new iPod accessories, but they just released/remodelled the iPod line these past 3-5 months. I'm putting my money on Apple Intel iBooks, and I just may get one if I'm right...
I'd venture their going to put all the Apple bloggers into a big room and gas'em for spreading rumors all the time.
Guaranteed to be an Apple branded phone/cell service/data service.
How do I know this?
I just parked 350 ponies down for a Sony Ericsson K750i.
That's why.

"1. I hate apple and will always be a apple hater, APPLE SUCKS!"
That's nice. Stop reading Apple-related stories, then.
Its a tablet. A Maclet. It has buttons and mic in the pen. The thing has a camera. It has a good battery life. But its going to be very expensive. Some where above $3000(mainly b/c of software). The funny thing is, its the size of an iPod.
I'm getting sort of sick and tired of all the crap hype that surrounds Apple's 'next best thing'. You know what WOULD be the next best thing, Apple? If you paid attention to a little something called craftsmanship, and made your products built to last.
Seems like every product they come out with, they have another one that's been out for a while that has significant faults (be it screen scratches, white spots, iPods mysteriously losing their entire music library, etc., etc.). I grew up on Apple computers from the beginning. An Apple IIe, then a MacPlus, a Performa, and so on. But, I'm sure not as proud of Apple as I used to be. Stevie J, just chill out for a while, and fix your broken toys before you buy new ones!
I didn't know the 'F-Word' was allowed on Engadget....
So many Apple haters, no wait... that's Microsoft. Go on, tell me, how much did MS pay you to make a post?
I'm excited about the news.
Dave: I am crossing my fingers for the same thing, an intel-based mini with frontrow that I can use for an HD media center. (Coincidentally, my name is also Dave, wierd.)
Jared: I guess they don't have to compete now, clicking that link took me to a page that said "The requested product is no longer available"
Ummmm A launch in infinate loop seems a bit unusual, either everywheres booked, its not an important annocunement or its a VERY importnat announcement. I find chocolate fun when im hungray, so maybe a chocolate coloured ipod or new shuffles.
iJobs.
I wouldn't be surprised to see an AirPort update next week. I was at my local Apple Store this past Saturday and the "refreshed table" was full of AirPort Extremes, AirPort Expresses, and those Monster audio cable kits. Maybe someone bought 4 AirPort Extremes and a handful of Expresses and decided he didn't want them, but I'm just not feeling it.
if it's "fun" doesn't it have to be a game, a gaming product or something that is actually fun. i know apple-geeks like myself find one-button mice and silver/white colored laptops fun, but i'm pretty sure Apple Marketing knows that when they say it's fun, it's gotta be fun for everyone!
Fun Fun Fun in the California Sun
Give me a music subscription service at the iTunes Music Store!
Well, we'll all know a week from now.
My thoughts:
PVR Software: Don't bother Apple. ElGato's got that part.
iPod BoomBox: Sure, 'cause iBoom was SUCH a hit...or was that miss?
New iPod w/video: Too soon. Maybe in October.
My Guess: We'll all know a week from now.
To add my 2 cents I think:
- The event has something to with the Billion Dollar coutdown/up :P; maybe announce the winners?
- An update to 'iTunes Music store', maybe to a fully fledged media store? To help introduce their iPod Video for their 30th? Along with iBooks.
- To add to the media experience they'll probably update the Mac mini line for Intel and add front row with remote. This will help bridge the gap and make the Mac mini more of a 'living room component'
The 'fun' could be anything because everything Mac is marketed as fun isn't it?
But who knows...
I'm hoping for a touchscreen video iPod. I just bought a 60GB 5th Gen iPod on Sunday but I'll still be able to return it after the announcement. I've got my fingers crossed for this badboy:
Hey Dan, your a FN redneck idiot. Buy an iPod you BF.
nice comment dan. Origional. And first at that! Hate is certainly helping the American and Muslim world relationship. keep up the hate. for now I will love apple :-)

Fine, stick to Windows and your blue screens, crashes, and overall shitty operating system and security issues.
With all the patents for the "mactablet", I want to see it soon. But I doubt it will happen this early. Then again, I never like to use the words "Apple" and "doubt" in the same sentence, simply because Stevie always seems to surprise me. The iPod touchscreen is always a possibility, but the video was just released not too long ago, sheesh! (Thats the one thing about technology, always advancing and leaving the pervious gen owners feeling boned.)
What i have been getting a whif of is a MacTel Mini. Complete with IR remote and front row, and maybe a built in iSight. The rumored integrated iPod dock is of course confirmed to not happen in the upcoming MacTel mini (see:ThinkSecret).
Enough speculating, though it is fun! I'll just wait to see what happens in a week :)

I'm leaning towards the Intel Mac Mini as well, hopefully with some PVR abilities and of course Front Row.
I just did an inventory check at 4 CompUSA stores in two different states (ID and UT) and only one store showed it had a Mac Mini in stock. That seems fishy.
Yes i agree it has to be something about the 1 billion songs downloaded and of course the Intel ibook.
1. A Bluetooth Mighty Mouse
2. The new 17" MacBookPro
3. Some new or improved iSomthing software
4. 500 more Widgets
5. The iMobile cell phone
6. An iBoombox
7. OS X is now available for purchase by PC owners - this is off-course due to the recent cracks by Maxxus making OS X 10.4.4 available to the masses :) Go Maxxus!!
I don't think the new video iPod is ready for Prime Time just yet.
I'm surprised that no one is making anything of the symbolism of the iCal logo on the advert... Everyone went nuts when the theatre curtains appeared before the launch of the video iPod (or was it Front Row? Both? I can't remember)
A couple of people are suggesting a pda which would certainly be an interesting extension of the ipod's functionality (with the addition of touch screen)...
I fuckin hope its a touchscreen iPod. Then I can laugh at Apple for finally going too far. A touchscreen dap sounds like it'd be all sweet and all, but I think it would end up being a horrible idea. Who wants to smudge, scratch and dirty the same screen they are watching videos on, and then when they try to wipe it clean, end up hitting six buttons. And hella if anyone is gonna carry around a pointer thing like for PDAs. Besides, I like the idea of being able to change tracks and volume without taking my DAP out of my back jeans pocket.
So go ahead, Apple, sign your own death certificate.
It's all about the fun. And 'some' means more than one. So lots of new fun stuff?
I'd like an iPod with a built-in camera and a version of PhotoBooth! Not gonna happen but it would certainly be fun...
Something for all the new iPod owners to buy would make sense. An accessory? Another consumer device? There's a lot of new Apple fans out there with money in their pockets so something like a boom box would surely make commercial sense.
But I think the good stuff may have to wait until 1st April. Steve Jobs has already flagged that date as an important one for Apple and they will surely celebrate with new product(s).
Oh, I forgot to mention that with the Samsung Helix and the Inno coming out with XM Radio and 50hrs of storage, that basically could be the iPod killer product of the year.
#43 - Right on.
If they announce an Intel Mac Mini or widescreen iBook (MacBook), they will probably have a sale from me. Been waiting a while for either.
sorry but apple doesn't use VERDANA
mabey it has something to do with iCal?
120 GB widescreen HD touchscreen video iPod with built-in PDA functions and iSight (video camera) and Bluetooth and Wireless G - $500 (Codename: New Newton)
Intel-based iTablet 2.5 GHz 512 MB RAM 60 GB HD 15" - $1499 - 17" - $1999
I like how there's such creative names for the new products. "iSuck, iCrap." I thought we're discussing the new products, not how big of Apple-haters we are. But personally, I'm thinking it will be something pretty awesome. Maybe not out of this world, but probably something downright useful. I would go see if I could, but right now I'm content waiting to hear about what they come up with. Don't let me down Apple!
Its a fake, thats the news, this is a photoshopped invite.
TABLET IBOOK! THAT WOULD BE SOO COOL!
I think that Apple will start to specialize it's iPod and develop it into a few different things. One may have a guitar jack, music recording software, a mic, or other tools for the music artist. Also, Apple may make a way to plug the ipod into a cable jack and record TV shows directly onto the iPod, and maybe a iPod photo with a memory card slot built in to transfer photos more intuitively. Apple may want to introduce more colors of the iPods that they already have. That'd sell.
Considering they just released an OS update (providing among other things "increased support for 3rd party software and devices") and an iTunes update, I am guessing that this will be a BIG announcement.
Apple loves shocking people so anticipated events like MacWorld don't always fit the bill.
I am guessing that they will release a new MediaPOD with 80Gb of memory, possibly a Cingular GPRS modem, touch screen interface and a funny little pen/stylus.
This gadget will connect users to their .Mac account for email, photos, music, etc., etc., etc.
They will receive criticism because it does not sync with an Exchange server, but it will have a browser and maybe even a local email client (doubt it - too hard to accomodate all different email accounts).
All that and it will cost $499.57.
Fortunately I just picked up an 8125 with a short 1 year contract. Should be perfect timing for the 2nd or 3 gen version.
Apple haters are silly. There are technologies they use daily on their dozers that would still be coming if it were up to macroplop.
I'm hoping for a 13" widescreen flashram iBook (ie no hard disk - say 32Gb) with firewire and USB2 but no optical drive. Light, small, fast and ideal for use with a multichannel audio interface.
iYawwwwwn
every time MS and Apple hype something, it always ends up dissappointing.
The only things for sure are:
1. Stevie boy will be REALLY excited
2. It will cost too much for what it is
3. Every Mac-head will want one and a lot will get one
4. Win-heads will hate it
5. Some 3rd party will make one better for less money, but sell significantly less
6. In mere months, another "Big Event" will happen that will make whatever announced this time seem like a joke.
Look for Apple to unveil new accessories, not anything of consequence such as a new iPod or iBook.
Maybe its an iVibrator or an iDildo
I may sound minimalistic, but I'm hoping for a wireless mighty mouse :-)
iAibo? im interested. PDA, mac mini media, they aint fun. games console, robot, some kind of toy more likely
17" MACBOOK PRO. want a bit of backup? check out this image STRAIGHT from the apple website. could've just been lazy though...
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/mb_ib_display_060110.jpg
damn. no HTML.
ah..good news!! good news indeed!! :D, i'm totally crossing my finger for an Touchscreen Video iPod, i haven't purchase any ipod product yet..but if they have a touchscreen one...i'm totally gonna get one now!!
Well we've done music and video, how about a new iPod book reader, like the forthcoming Sony Reader?
Apple could steal their thunder by not only being first-to-western-markets with a device using e-ink, but add downloadable books to the iTunes store.
With so many out-of-copyright classics to start with, they could get a decent amount of content up at launch without having had to worry about publishers getting on board prior to release, and risk spilling the beans.
Done right, with sensible DRM, they could quickly corner the market with a device spec that is just about ready for prime time, in a category that a lot of pundits say will start to make headway this time around.
With a small iPod-like hard drive, or some of this flash memory they've spent loads of money on, you could hold thousands of pages of material.
With the ability to sync to iTunes, all the newspapers and peridicals will be falling over themselves to get their content online with Apple.
Suitable for vertical markets and leisure, possibly with some of these recent touchscreen controls they've patented, seems like a low hanging fruit to go after.
I know I'd get one like a shot if you could sync any old PDF to it, now most computer manuals only come as PDFs.
Fun = iboombox and downloadable games for the ipod via itunes!
Case closed :o)
OS 11 and an iGame!
I think it is definitely somthing to do with Intel because in the last keynote speach that was the graphic used when they were talking about dates for new Intel products.
Just an educated guess
For "Fun" read "not all that useful but people will still buy them". Marketing people dont do "Fun" unless they cant figure out who would want to buy a product.
iDonno
The tablet or pda would be good guesses. Upgraded iBooks aren't fun enough. My vote is on iTunes integration with the PS3 or the Xbox 360 and that iTunes will allow for buying/streaming full movies now. Whichever console can get ahold of iTunes for buying music and movies will win the console war. Period.
I figured it out. They will be announcing that everyone who thinks windoze can actually run on the new machines will be institutionalized for stupidity.
windoze user really do live in freakin la la land. i have a slogan for all you anti apple users who think windoze is so great
"windoze its not just for gaming anymore. Now you can actually run ONE program without having to hit CONTROL+ALT+DELETE ... well for a second anyway"
I want apple to announce that they just signed a trillion dollar deal to take over the banking systems of the world. im tired of not being able to get into my account because the windoze system crashed AGAIN! or the teller at the window can't get her windoze to open !
btw iTunes does have a music subscription. ya simply pre pay monthly the amount you want. then go download what you want at that $ amount.
iPr0n.
iGame! They want to compete w/ Microsoft, etc. It is a multi media device. I'm going to buy one. He he he he.
Everyone is doing the play on the "i" like it will "iSuck". Why not MacSuck Pro?
its something big because they cancelled the new music tuesdays for the 21st and said to wait for the 28th, therefor it is something big with itunes. Go ahead and download the twenty second podcast for the 21st of feb.
Video iPod with telephone, web-browser and camera please!
video iPod with phone, gps and camera please!
i really want a 12" mac book pro
