Samsung's Q1 ultramobile PC

In the traditional Engadget fashion of having caught shots, screen pics, and even a proper hands-on before the device is announced, may we present to you Samsung's Q1. Call it an ultramobile PC, call it Origami, whatever, it's a 779g (1.7 pound) 9 x 5.5 x 1-inch mini-tablet with a 7-inch touchscreen LCD, Celeron M ULV processor, 40GB drive, 512MB RAM, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS and DMB options (of course), and Windows XP Tablet with Touch Pack. We still don't yet know a price or expected release on this, so expect yet another post on the Q1 in the near future, or at very least an update to this one.

I love it!

Compared to media players, iPods etc these devices have an OS, albeit Windows, which means I can run all kinds of programs. I could turn it into a media player, an organizer, a customer database. Whatever.

Sure, it doesn't look very trendy/fancy and it's rather big... but how can it be small and sleek when it needs to hold a 7" screen and a battery with proper capacity?

I'm sure Microsoft invested thousands of dollars to find out if there's market for these devices. Sure there is one.

Wireless WiFi VGA connection? Plug&Play keyboard/mouse connection with bluetooth? I could leave it in my rucksack and use it as a desktop PC or Media Center.

So this is Vaio U from 2003. Vaio U's fatal shortcoming was its 2.5hr battery life. Hope the 2+ years since Vaio U would have extended this to 8 hours, or this is another useless handheld.

It's been interesting watching the reaction to Q1 and Origami now that it's out. Nothing we've seen is really anything unexpected - and we were excited BEFORE the launch - now there's a lot of griping

So, here it is in a nutshell.

It's not a PDA.
It's NOT a PSP.
It's NOT a PXBox360.
It's not a laptop.
It's not specifically an iPod killer.

What it IS is the PADDs you saw everyone carrying around in Star Trek TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

What everyone's missing (and I guess no one was paying attention since all the information is right there in front of you) is that there isn't ONE design. This is Samsung's. Everyone is free to build whatever style they like, so if you think this one is ugly - wait a month or two and see what other companies have.

They're also missing the price point. The OQO is US$2100 and has a tiny screen (although the resolution is about the same). If you want a PC that's the size of a largish PDA, get an OQO.

The Q1 is expected to land in the US$1000 range and has a significantly larger screen, which should make it easier to use for most people, yet is still small enough to put in a coat pocket or shoulder bag with ease.

Personally - I think it has to be at the US$500 price point with an 8+ hr battery - but guess what? Microsoft AGREES. This is the first generation and it's actually compelling already. Most PDAs with this level of functionality are in the ballpark around US$750, but can't run Windows apps.

The idea of having a lightweight computer that I can lug with me anywhere and get connected anywhere there's WiFi (or through my cellphone) and won't break my spine with weight or need a huge amount of room... I think it's compelling.

The next gen will be even better.

Right now, I am neutral about these ultramobile PCs. I really see nothing totally new, but I do see a lot of potentials with this new category especially in the professional settings such as the medical and real estate field. From all the reactions and comments about this new product that I have been reading, I think this product will not be for everybody.

If I was to buy this Ultramobile PCs, I would more likely use it around the house. This will definitely not be my main or secondary computer, but more for entertainment than actual input work. Just like reading a book in bed or on the couch, I could see myself being lazy and relaxing, surfing the internet, listening to music, reading an ebook, or reading the internet version of my favorite newspaper while using the toilet (a little too much information, nasty, LOL). I tried to do all of these things with my PDA and find the screen to be too small and the speed too slow (not satisfying). I feel awkward having a laptop on my laptop in bed or on the couch. I'm not much a video gamer but I'm looking at Sony's PSP, but it lacks memory storage and a touch screen.

I hope Microsoft, Intel, and all the computer makers get this UMPC right or it will be another Newton. I will take a wait and see approach and will definitely not buy the first generation of these little computers. Before I even consider buying one, I will want to see a price range of around $500, longer battery life, and an improved design. Micorsoft, you hear me.

Any word about the graphics capabilities of these things? A Geforce GO 7800GTX would certainly make them worth it (heck, any portable graphics would be worth $500). I already have an old Fujitsu C-500 upgraded to 40GB and XP Tablet. What I don't have is something that can play a game more exciting than spider solitaire.

It is the most horrible thing, I ever saw. It reminds me of old portable televisions. I mean we are in the year 2006 and this is really the Top of what we can get? Is this the Revolution...I mean from the Design this thing is a disaster!
And from the funktional side, it is too thick, too big (it should be only that bi as the screen ist) No Hardware Kees, no Border (at least not such a big broad border)
I am just really DISAPPOINTED about this BOX with a screen. Oh you can touch it...WOW!!

I'm going to wait until sony or fujitsu or toshiba does thing right before I pick one up. It's basically a full function pda with a better screen and touch capability (styluses suck, I'm sorry but it's true). I'd love to be able to slip this into my backpack loaded with the apps that I use on a daily basis, a vpn connection work data, and google storing my personal media. No mention of 3g yet has me a little miffed.

As far as getting a decent graphics processor in there for games, I wouldn't hold your breath. Look at the gaming laptops out there right now. You need a sherpa to tote those things around.

I can't understand how everyone keeps saying this thing is to big. If you look at the market the most comparable products are the Pepper Pad and The Archos 700. Both are about the same size. The Archos only plays/records video (larger HD though) and the Pepper Pad doesn't support man stream apps. Price of the Archos $799, Pepper Pad $799. How in the hell do you think this thing is going to be < $500. It's a true mobile computer.

When on a plane I could actually use this. Laptops aren't the easiest thing to use on a plane especially regional jets - not enough room.

For me it comes down to battery life, holdability (there's a big difference in the size of a man's and a woman's hand) and ruggedness. I'm not even considering it for myself. (I still don't own an MP3 players.) But if I want to deploy this as a viable business tool at work, it has to work outside all day and take a little bit of a beating. Oh, and fit within a reasonable budget.

My first impression is like lots of those posts above...I just don't see the usefullness at this price point. For a salesperson, consultant, or anyone in business that does presentations it could be useful to take to boardrooms (if it has an out...haven't seen one from the screenshots). I'll be interested in a few years when this is moved up to Vista, looses a lot of the boarder, and adds WiMAX.

I think its great, especially for us Palm Smartphone users (Samsung i300 anyone? anyone? Bueller?) who want more screen. Running around office /house /town with Outlook on this thing? checking calander and emails and contacts and tasks? Awesome.

I would (will) love to be able to use it with Vindigo to get around my town or other town when I travel. Use it as a car computer/gps/map screen. And if it has functional wifi = Google Maps.

Poking around the Microsoft website it says it will use MS Strrets and Trips and will import contacts/poi direct from MS Office (including my restaurant databases from MS Access).

and no keyboard or camera (thank gawd who needs the weight and clunkiness.

I've always wanted something I could use to read graphics-rich e-books while sitting in an armchair. A notebook it too heavy, clumsy and eventually fries your bollocks. A regular tablet-pc is too expensive.

Perhaps UMPC combine all advantages of the mobile computers and devices like smartphones, PDA and palm compuuters. UMPC have to replace laptops completely! I think this is the answer to what I have been looking for for years. Portable media, gps, word/excel/outlook, and all the other windows apps make this thing a simplification of a gadget-freaks life. Why carry an iPod, a garmin GPS, and a PDA when this one does it at all at the same time?

Yes, it is first generation, so it will have BIG downsides. The battery life I agree with, it has to have at least 6 hours before it becomes viable. But the price I disagree on. I'd pay $1000 for it. How much is an iPod/archos video player, a large screened garmin GPS, and a good hp iPaq? Nearly double that. And as far as tablet PCs go, I haven't found one well equiped for under $1,600. Yes, the tablet PC has a much larger screen, but the bulk of that form factor is exactly what I was trying to avoid.

As far as gaming goes, there is no reason to even consider it. When you buy a gaming machine you either buy a console designed for it or a beefy PC with gaming in mind. You never buy the stock PC expecting it to rock out the latest games with video settings maxed out. This isn't designed to be a gaming machine, not to say there won't be beefier versions released that will be.

I think the form factor will evolve with the device. I think iPods make the best examples. Remember the first iPod? It was slim but if you compare it to the video iPod now (let alone the nano) it looks huge. We are used to that slim iPod form factor that has taken years of evolution to occur. Same goes with the price and specs. There are iPod shuffles, nanos and the stock video iPod. Eventually as these break ground there will be different levels of quality, size, price, speed, and features. Give it time, and pray enough people buy the first gen to give the second gen a chance to be born, lets not kill this one before it leaves the ground.

I think these will be absolutely perfect once a few more companies jump in the scene and the next generation hits. Honestly, think of all those people who buy $500 Dell's because all they want is email and word. If these do hit the predicted $500 mark then these could become household devices that are more common than household PCs in 5 years.

Think automotive application for a moment... If someone designs a cradle for this thing to slot into my dashboard...(and play the audio through car speakers) and it's already got USB port to plug my GPS in.. and the Windows Portable OS will run Streets & Trips 2007 (which has turn-by-turn voice prompting) and it has touch-screen capability...

WWWOW! At about $1,000 US, this beats any touch-screen navigation screen you can buy (it lets you run ANY navigation software you want - that'll run on the Windows Portable OS). not locked in to software.

And it does triple duty as a portable media player, PDA, and plain old PC (if you get USB keyboard it'd be easy enough to type up a document or whatever)...

I can see this device integrating into my life. Not replacing my existing server and notebook... but complimenting them.

I'm using my HP4705hx (PDA)so much. Findng programs that sync vital information between my PC and PPC is difficult. I intend to purchase a UMPC solely on the basis of portability and using programs that work on my PC also working on the UMPC with no more synching. Right now I'm looking at the eo, Samsung and OQO -- Samsung is looking pretty good.

I'm a NOKIA 770 user, and so, I like Samsung's Q1 - with reservations - I like it as a concept - it will be nice to see the 2nd gen Q2(?) - whether it will be sleeker, and more powerful for it's high(er) price $1000 USD). PDA's, like Palm TX, Dell Axim - these are ok (some pda's also have built-in cameras), but the Samsung Q1 - albeit, with a much needed longer battery life - is really where true mobile computing is at - well, maybe with the second generation device, anyway.

Go ahead, go to Europe where most of the time your walking, and have pro camera gear as well lugging it from train to train, going through crowded shops and streets, and have your ultralight laptop with at 4 lbs.
Well wake the hell up, it's no longer 4 lbs of idiot in a bag. It's 15lbs with brick and what ever else.

I'd take this in a heart beat at $1000 vs a laptop. Everything you do while on tour involves photos.
So your going to show off them cool shots with friends on the camera's screen. That's as low class as it gets.

Now tour for 3 months or more. Your baggage is now condensed down to camera and laptop. In a carry on roller bag. With maybe enough room left for a tooth brush.

This is the perfect device for travel at any cost, and I'll have one shortly

I was able to play around with the Q1 a few weeks ago. It was definately impressive. On paper it may seem like the size is a problem, but [at least to me] the size seemed perfect. I was one of probably about a dozen or so people looking at it. After seeing it we were all in agreement that we would be buying them when they first come out. It kinda reminds me of webtv. I wouldn't say that it's a total replacement for a computer, but if your traveling and just need to check email or surf the internet, it seemed to be perfect. Then you have the added benifit of adding a few windows based programs that you might want to use while traveling.
