Dorky PSM3 editors get real, live, working PS3 to play with
Who woulda' thunk it? After all these years of rumors, delays, fanboy wars and beefy dev kits, somebody actually got a flesh n' blood PS3 with real, live blinky LED lights and even some of those "video games" all the kids are talking about these days. The lucky recipients of this system -- and subsequent takers of many nerdy pics -- are the PSM3 magazine peeps, so props to them for verifying the true existence of this mystical console, and for being a bunch of lucky bastages. As for their impressions, they're pretty positive. Apparently the system runs incredibly quietly, the "SIXAXIS" joypad is light (as ever) and quite responsive, and start up and load times are ultra-speedy. Of course, the console is also "heavy like a planet" and the shiny console easily succumbs to dust and fingerprints, along with being quite difficult to photograph -- though we're pretty sure you're not going to spend a large percentage of your time snapping pics of the thing when there's "TrueHD" entertainment to be had. Be sure to peep their vid of the PS3 in action after the break.

RxRitalin, you seem to have wandered off somewhere yet never actually responded to to my claims.
So you do agree with me then? You said nothing is wrong with the PS2 controller and it's fine just the way it is, therefore, it is being repackaged with the PS3, but with new technologies (minus others). So, by your logic, how would the Dual-shock revision be any different than a Power Glove 2.0? You have an old concept with new technology. So again I reiterate, how is the PS3's controller not repackaged technology? As for you not liking rumble, well, I could care less. You're one person- let's not be egotistical now.
You also claim that the PS3's menu is using present technology. Even if the PSP is using present technology, in the end, the idea (concept of style) is still being repackaged on the PS3, n'est-ce pas?
Have you ever heard of the term 'ignoratio elenchi'? Basically, it explains how someone might use this logical fallacy to hold an argument to something but in reality is actually supporting completely different propositions, therefore, rendering the whole rebuttal irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
the menu looks like a giant psp, must be really user friendly
The Cross Media Bar is a Sony-wide UI. They're implementing it in whatever they can, including new TVs. I don't know why people are so surprised by this.
blinky lights!
Well they never show any game in action... No point to the video, other than to affirm the fact that that's a real PS3.
Nice teaser. I'm a fan of the PSP's minimal interface too. Can't wait to get one.
oooo flapy flaps....
Super speedy? This vid was not any proof of that ay,.
In the video, he goes from the lil preview of Motorstorm at 1:06 and arrives at the title screen at 1:23, thats 17 seconds that not too shabby for a 2x Blu-Ray drive.
Check out the pics on that page. Everytime I saw that Samsung display, I thought, "Xbox 360". Then I saw it - the quick-charge unit sitting on the desk! No doubt they hastily hid the 360 from view for the pics and vid.
I wonder if it needs to do the hdmi handshake everytime... that would kind of negate the "quick startup", but could be fixed in a software update, or something
that game looks cool as, great detail, even in the photo!
Has anyone else noticed that engadget is starting to being rather rude and careless about video game news? It's like "Oh wow look at the PS3 that these nerds got, woopty-damn-doo lets get some mp3 player news here please."
Holy Crap the PS3 actually exists?! I never would have guessed.
Seriously though, I'll be surprised, based on what I have seen so far, if Sony doesn't have a stocking issue at least as bad, if not worse, than the XBox 360 had. I also don't understand how that will go onto my shelf at all... what happens when I want to stack something on top? I guess I'm just SOL.
The rounded top isn't a poor design choice. It is a deliberate design that will prevent you from stacking things on top in order to help keep the system cool. They're trying to avoid the overheating issues that plagued the early PS2s when people stacked other components on top of them.
looks like a wired controller too. Those Cheeky Bastards!
Now I REALLY can't wait to get a Wii!
what's under those secret flaps? a secret? =P
Bunch o' nerds... nerding it up. That's 2 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
What they never answered:
Can you kill a man with this console? Like, put a chain on it and use it like a flail?
Engadget calling another sites editors dorky?
Irony my friends, irony
It's a rather ugly looking system in the picture shown.
Yeeeeayyyy! Can't wait till March to get one! Only half a year wait!
I think I'm buying myself an xbox360 this christmas.
The PS3 is so ugly. They should have had a public design contest to design the console shell. It still could be a good machine though. I've lost a lot of faith in Sony lately but they are not completely lost. They do have 'some' good products but often their pricing is not at all competitive. They price a lot of their stuff close to what real HiFi, boutique, whatever you want to call them brands price their stuff at yet it's consumer grade quality comparable to Samsung, Toshiba, etc. Let's see what the PS3 can really do. Come on. Show us. It's October already.
love the coca cola style logo behind the playstation 3
They prob. made it round so no one could put anything on top, every console I buy they keep telling me to not put anything on or around it. Maybe this is just there way of making sure I don't. And I hope its quiter than my 360 that thing sounds like a jet taking off with different fan speeds and everything. WrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRrrrrRRRRRRRRrrrr..
Wait...what "super speedy" startup was that? What if I want to put other AV equipment on the shelf with it?
And I'm not a fan of the PSP interface, though I know that others are. Is there going to be any customization with it?
They didn't mention that Xbox kept secret their super HUGE power brick and that was one of the many shockers of the x360, with the PS3, there is NO brick.
Not sure if they're stuck to a NDA about features, but it would be nice to see what Sony gave them, especially to those who've seen the features of a Dev model, and are not sure what is going to be removed on release.
Don't you mean audible? (I hope you are pretending to be an MD) And no you are incorrect. I can distinctly remember Atari reducing the size of their 2600 long before Sony entered the video gaming market (when Sony was still making money).
Can't say I'm blown away by it. Load time looked rather long and boring.
Brick could always get smaller maybe even non-existent with future Xbox 360 releases.
Could get? lol - with M$ that is a very heavy statement. Playstation was the first to re-release consoles smaller and they'll continue to do that. Microsoft isn't known for doing anything of the sort. Trust me, with PS3 there won't be any "ugly" surprise like where to put the power brick. Its also barely auditable, unlike the loud blasts of the X360.
Tim: they're just jealous.
What we really need is the two consoles playing the same game side by side.
Actually, Nintendo was the first to make it's systems smaller... the SNES mini came out 1997, PSOne in 2000... just so you know.
While impressed with the system menu, very different from the X360, I would have like to have seen a few more minutes of use. Giving me an idea of, like another poster said, how the console actually functions.
Of course, all anyone ever talks about here is so fanboyish... LOL XBOX IS HEUG
But the only issue that matters is that... Are the games actually fun? Is it really worth the $500(or $600)?
Didn't anyone else realiza how SLOW the game loaded? Even my Xbox loads faster than that...
Why is everyone so stupid on every forum? A 2x blu ray drive is much faster (in mb/s) than a 2x dvd drive, just as a 2x dvd drive is much faster than a 1x cd drive (it is the equivilent of a 18x cd drive in Mb/s) So get your facts straight before you post flaming nonsense. Oh, and it took what like 2 seconds to load the game straight to the menu screen. It didn't load to some intro or anything, straight to the "Press Start" screen. Bullshit xbox is that fast. I rarely post on this site, but the blatant ignorance here is too much.
DOES IT????
Personally I cant stand that interface. It may work well with psp, but the ps3 is a different console. I definitely prefer the 360 interface.
damn... wasted perfectly good sarcasm on the wrong person... stupid email verify system
look at the "discs" dont they look like DVD's that have been copied so does that mean i can copy them!!!!!
No you can't copy PS3 games you dolt! You know, before games are finished or stamped they are burned on local media just without the security. Its possible they sent out versions of the game on burned media with security for PSM3. And they're not DVD, so even if it was burned media with no security you couldn't copy it (cause i doubt you own a blu-ray burner)
Whisper quiet. THAT'S what I've been waiting to hear.
call me crazy...
1) The load time wasn't fast at all! Loading the initial UI is fast... as it should be? But the actual game load itself was no faster then the PS1 or PS2.
2) The UI was off-center? I love it on my PSP, but it just doesn't do it for my PS3. :/ Not down with it.
3) The system is ugly. Scratch that. REALLY ugly. And really unpractical? What if I want to put other systems on top? It looks retarded with the base smaller then the top of the system.
The graphics look SICK, but I don't think as of now, the graphics are the deal breaker for me. I'm more for gameplay - which I have yet to see.
I'm not trying to be bias or fanboyish, I'm just mearly pointing out my speculations that I've noticed so far.
It actually kindof reminds me of the Atari 7800? :)
360+wii will be good enough for me..
The shiny finish on the PS3 is hideous... it makes it look like a cheap toy you would buy in a blister pack and probably break it while trying to open it.
And the graphics are good, yes, but I wouldn't say they're significantly above the 360's.
if it has the psp menu, then i cant wait for an exploit. but man that does that make me want a ps3, i wish i could win one cause i cant afford $1000 on it.
All metalic black items shows up worst on a picture due to refection.
I'm not sure if some people understand, the blu-ray drive is only at 2x so that is pretty fast considering that if can load the game as fast as the PS2's 4x DVD drive.
