Ok, we're not gonna lie, $59 is a hefty amount of scratch for what's effectively a Magsafe plug on the one side, and an EmPower power with a standard 20mm power plug. But it's also one of the most effective ways to power -- not charge -- your MacBook or MacBook Pro (
Core Duo or
C2D) while in flight that we've yet seen. So at least you don't have to feel unnecessarily guilty about watching The Office in DiVX while on your trans-continental since now you won't dip into that reserve power before landing and putting back on that business cap. Just make sure you're seated in a row with power, though -- we've found other fliers are generally pretty unruly when you try and bogart their juice mid-flight.

I think its so you can bring your laptop on the plane without the battery, so you dont blow shit up with exploding batteries.

1st!
So which airlines have this plug?
Stephen Marshall @ Oct 24th 2006 12:57PM
does this mean airline only or will it work in cars and everything with the 20 mm power plug?
Bloobie @ Oct 24th 2006 2:04PM
Stephen: airplane-only.
jimmy: it's a power adapter for the MacBooks / MacBook Pro's to be used in airplanes with compatible (Empower/20mm) power ports.
jimmy: what is worse? I'd say someone who posts "i for one welcome our insert-something-here-overlords".

ummm
why not just buy a power inverter that can charge your laptop and pretty much anything else you throw at it? Very dumb product...
Tim Rand @ Oct 24th 2006 10:06PM
Well, no, it's not dumb. The inverters (like i-Go and many others) are larger than this and weigh a pound or so with cords and case, etc. So this is just a cable with smarts. HOWEVER, many of the trans-atlantic airlines have switched to a 110 power port. That port DOES use your traditional power brick. BUT then, they limit the power to 70 watts and the 85 watt Apple Powerbrick doesnt work.
