Best Buy Mobile opens up shop in New York
While Best Buy's been selling mobiles (and holding out on Wii hopefuls) for some time now, the big blue retailer is diverting a bit more fundage towards the cause. Aside from continuing to offer phones and plans in typical stores, Best Buy is opening up a smattering of New York-based Mobile stores to handle your cellular needs (and probably hassle you for an extended warranty as well). While details about the store layout and initial offerings are a bit scant at this point, we do know that nine locales will be opening up in the Big Apple alone, with a red (as in, not black) PRODUCT (RED) RAZR being their "exclusive" offering. The stores will partner with Verizon Wireless, Amp'd Mobile, Sprint-Nextel, and Cingular, and should have a plethora of promotional goodies surrounding each and every door to snag your attention.

pretty much Union Square got a good deal with the opening of this store.

Where are these stores located in Manhattan? What's the difference between one of these stores and the hundreds of independent mobile stores that line the streets?

I saw one over the weekend a couple of blocks North of Times Square. I didn't go inside, but from the curb it looked like pretty much any other mobile phone store I've ever seen.
These stores have been here for a bit. Curently there is one on broadway between 80th and 81st (or right around there, but on broadway)
Yeah Union SQ at 14th had one opening already for two weeks, they are fully open now. Last time I passed, I saw the store was full...with Best Buy employees. They looked like vultures ready to eat on your flesh as soon as you step in there. I am staying away from their friendly let-us-practice-on-you-our-annoying-new-shop-propaganda help.
A Palm Store, a Nokia Store, Now a BestBuy phones store at Manhattan, near Tim Square...Everything over priced for lazzy tourists!!!
Manhattanies suffering!!!
The best buy at 86th St. and Lexington has had this open for about a month. Prices are pretty good, and they do already have the Project Red RAZR. The nice thing is that they hired new employees to work it, and they seem to be a step above typical BB employees when it comes to customer service. I like how you can walk in and compare many different companies offerings, without feeling the pressure or worry about getting uber ripped off like the small shops.
If only you guys knew anything about retail. The reason why we held units until Sunday was because the Wii was in the ad. So we held them so that everyone had a fair chance at getting a Wii, not to hold out on people. Would you rather have it so you go into Best Buy on Wednesday when they open and have them turn you away because they dont have any but then an hour later they get 50 and you miss out or have a better chance at scoring one 4 days later because you know for sure they will have them? Sure you have to wait a whole 4 days but at least you have a better chance at getting your Wii.
/rant about internet sites / general public being retarded / selfish.
Yeah, they just opened one next to Wachovia on Madison between 46th and 45th Street..
I went in there last week, and no one there had a clue about the VX9900.. I mean, granted it hadn't been released, but they hadn't so much as heard of it..
BAH!!
