HP releases no-frills HP 510 notebook
Not everyone is down with latest and greatest hardware -- or they just can't afford it -- and it's definitely not the dual-core-and-SLI crowd HP is targeting with its new HP 510 laptop. The 15-incher features just about what you'd expect from a $565 notebook computer, so specs like 'Celeron M.' 'integrated graphics,' and '1GB max RAM' should come as little surprise. You're still getting all the basics here, though, including a 60GB hard drive, b/g WiFi, a passable WXGA resolution and 512MB of RAM, and a DVD combo drive. Not one we'd show off to the ladies or anything, but it'll get the job done, and it's available immediately.

won't run vista, but even if it could, would you want to?
good capable laptop. although I'd rather see one with 14'1 or even 12'1 for added portability. I mean, this isn't a laptop replacement, why do you need 15 inch?

"won't run vista, but even if it could, would you want to?"
No, dude, I would rather they install Windows98 because Vista is such a piece of $hit!!!! (Yes that was sarcasm)
The fact that you Vista bashers are still around is just sad.

I think this is a pretty good looking laptop.

That angle makes it look like the top half is so much bigger in proportion to the bottom half

You need glasses.

THIS is a laptop that should come preinstalled with Linux, if only to drop the price a bit more.
Abdul Quraishi @ Mar 30th 2007 9:14PM
I would probably think that the kind of person that would buy this laptop wouldn't know what the hell Linux was. Even if they did, it would only make it harder to use for them.
Leon @ Mar 29th 2007 11:02PM
I disagree, I don't think that linux is al that much of a learning curve if you're used to Windows XP. If it was an option at purchase, I think it would make a lot of sense. They could choose the Windows that they known, or experiment a bit with another OS and save some money at the same time.

A step in the right direction, but what I REALLY want is a tablet PC with Vista Home Premium..... ohh and it should still be $565!
WhoDatNinja @ Mar 30th 2007 8:09AM
This is great for someone who wants portability but doesn't need to do too much more than check email and browse the net, maybe create some word and excel docs here and there. I'd go ahead and max it out at 1gb of ram though.
Ted @ Apr 20th 2007 6:20PM
This is the perfect laptop once you max the RAM at 1GB. Anyone who likes VISTA is a complete moron. Anyone else who doesn't get wy Microsoft is the enemy needs to sit on the toilet and think real hard about why all goverments, churhes and monopolies are INNATELY corrupt.
Chris @ Jul 27th 2007 9:03AM
I bought it b/c theres no Vista...Its a great little laptop for 500.00w/tax and no rebate crap..

How is this any different than what HP is producing with the current low end (if there are opposing ends) of the Compaq line of notebooks (The c502,504, etc). They're all Celerons with 512 MB of memory and yes, they're all running Vista Basic and can be found at most retailers for around $499-549 on a regular basis.
I guess HP thought they were doing too well with their name that had actually started to regain some credibility from the crap they put out in the 90's and had to drag it down a bit with a pile like this thing.
