I-O Data's dual DVD-writer: still PC-less but faster than ever
Remember I-O Data's dual-DVD burner released last year? Yeah, that one. Well, it's back and better than ever. Bumping the model name from DVR-UW8D to DVR-UW8D2, their newest super duper bumps DVD and CD write speeds across the board. Of course, it still does its thing (dupe non-commercial CDs and DVDs with a single button press) without the assistance of a PC. An expensive trick for the ¥53,000 (about $430) price it'll snag.

WOW! So, it will copy "Non-commercial" dvd's and cd's without a pc! So, if I put in an unprotected (torrent anyone) burnt dvd I can copy them without a pc! - Time to setup a market stall at my local car-boot sale - and offer black market dvd's on the fly!
Yeah! Then, when the cops come, you can just nuke the $450 unit instead of your whole PC!
You won't have to, it's not like it stores the data after it burns it, right?
I rememeber having one occasion this thingie would have come in handy. I had to produce some 30 copies of a software product we made for our client, and it was a pain in the *** to burn all those on a couple of pc's.
Oh wait, selling those cd's to our own customer made them commercial, so this device would have been of no use to us anyway, right?

'commercial' in this context probably means factory-produced instead of burnt on an ordinary PC. Or did you think the device checks the data and uses some AI to determine it's legal status?
Anyway, I can't realy think of many legit uses either. But that doesn't mean there is no market for this device ;)
Nero always informs the user if the CD/DVD they're copying is copyrighted. I'm sure this device would use a similar system.
Anyway, as long as space isn't an issue I'm sure you could build a similar box with an old PC and a couple of DVD writers for under $450.
I got a 1 to 6 disc duplicator off of eBay for this price. There is a guy on there that builds and sales them for cheaper than you can buy all the components yourself. It comes in real handy when I need to burn off a couple dozen copies of a slideshow DVD for my clients.
