80GB iPhone?
Just spotted this in the iPhone's AT&T activation video. A 74.40GB capacity huh? Either they've got a hard disk drive iPhone in the works or the marketing team fudged the videos using an 80GB iPod. Check it for yourselves 6min and 17seconds into the video.

I have sent it too
andrew @ Jun 26th 2007 10:32AM
that would be the only way i would get an iPhone is if had memory like that. Who can hold movies on 8gb?
Rowdehaj @ Jun 26th 2007 10:35AM
Lots of people can. Considering you scale them down for a pocket device.
randy @ Jun 26th 2007 11:04AM
Isn't that why they included YouTube? So you don't have to 'hold' them?
Gabe @ Jun 26th 2007 1:49PM
no that's not why they include youtube, it is illegal to upload movies to youtube. at least the type that we are probably talking about, plus, what do you do then when you are on the subway or a deadzone?
Sneakz @ Jun 26th 2007 10:32AM
Definitely using an 80GB iPod Video.
LikesGadgetsWillTravel @ Jun 26th 2007 12:47PM
So they're using their usual deceitful marketing practices. They really have it made. Not only are they getting an army of suckers/beta-testers who pay too much for a device that does too little, but on top of that, they're locking them in to the US' worst GSM provider for two years at $75-$100/month.
chadow @ Jun 26th 2007 1:19PM
Where do you get 'worlds worst' GSM provider? I get 3G speeds that double and sometimes triple friends Verizon, Sprint, and Blackberry speeds....and I always have a signal anywhere I go. As far as I tell, iPhone went with the best provider they could have.
They really should have built 3G into the stupid thing though.
Gabe @ Jun 26th 2007 1:50PM
don't compare the worst customer service with worst GSM provider, two different things. Tmobile is the one that has spotty service, I know cause i just switched cause it was getting so bad, cool thing is that they give you free stuff for their bad service and their customer service is awesome, they are like the friends that you call up just to talk to, i know that sounds weird, but they are awesome!!!
Paul @ Jun 26th 2007 2:05PM
This whole "Best Network" debate is pointless. Seeing as I am sure we are spread across the USA (Or world) the "best" network varies considerably.
Joe @ Jun 26th 2007 10:32AM
From this, one can only conclude that the iPhone is entirely fake.
Daniel @ Jun 26th 2007 10:33AM
Um...maybe nobody else thought of this already, but consider that maybe there's a decimal-related bug in that demo in iTunes...shift it one place to the left, and I think we have our answer.
Tristan @ Jun 26th 2007 12:13PM
Not really. If you look a couple seconds back into the video, there is a shot that shows the Iphone's capacity along with the owners name and the software version. The capacity is 7.27 GB if your decimal assumption was correct, it would show 7.44 GB.
Sorry
DBX00 @ Jun 26th 2007 10:34AM
This rumor probably just cost someone in the marketing department a job. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.
Kiwi616 @ Jun 26th 2007 10:36AM
So this version of the iPhone costs:
$5,990??? (599/8GB = 74.875/GB X 80GB)
:)
LikesGadgetsWillTravel @ Jun 26th 2007 12:48PM
Even at $299, this would be WAY overpriced.
gguerini @ Jun 26th 2007 1:25PM
But it still cheaper than M$ Surfice...
And it all about $5k bucks! Hahahaha
Rohit Kapur @ Jun 26th 2007 10:38AM
I JUST Tipped you guys on news on this very thing!!!
effzehn @ Jun 26th 2007 10:40AM
Check the full formated capacity to the right of the iPhone picture. I guess this iTunes Version was a Beta-iPhone-supporting one or simply done with help of AfterEffects / Final Cut.
Andrew Stone @ Jun 26th 2007 10:43AM
Stuff like this happens all the time in the "ad production" business. The piece gets finished but it comes back for a change, source files are elsewhere, there is a tight deadline so they fudge it. A new screenshot gets doctored up except they forgot to change a few things.
Usually things like this goes unnoticed but not when the hoards of Apple fanboys are scrutinizing everything that passes under their noses.
TVGenius @ Jun 26th 2007 11:35AM
Source files better not be everywhere. I'd seriously hope they're using Final Cut Server.
BFish @ Jun 26th 2007 10:53AM
Also small detail at the end of the video, you can charge the battery via USB -port =)
Scott Hitchins @ Jun 26th 2007 10:46AM
look up as the picture zooms out, the phone capacity is listed at 7.4 some-odd gigs, it's an eight gig phone. They just missed the edit in post.
Chad @ Jun 26th 2007 4:20PM
Wat about the fact that the plan details are also on this video.
$59.99 for 400 minutes, $79.99 for 900 minutes and $99.99 for 1350 minutes. ALL include unlimited data and 200 SMS messages.
pezfueled @ Jun 26th 2007 10:46AM
Also wedding crashers is not part of the itunes store...
GregGrunge @ Jun 26th 2007 6:03PM
FYI - You can actually rip and encode your own DVD's to a usable size/format for iPods.
pezfueled @ Jun 27th 2007 3:09AM
right-on, but this is a video posted by apple... and fyi, they're not likely to publicly support any metohs living in that legal cray zone... though that gray zone is bullshit.
new line cinemas, to my knowledge at least, has yet to publish via itunes...
todd @ Jun 26th 2007 10:46AM
Does anyone else want to see Steve Jobs at this very moment? It's got to be an amazing tech-tempter-tantrum. How many people will be fired for this snafu?
JD @ Jun 26th 2007 12:17PM
I'm gonna go with one.
Actually, make that zero. Jobs probably took the guy out to lunch so they could laugh at how a simple slip-up (intentional or not) and a bunch of fanboys can triple traffic on Apple's site on an otherwise-ordinary Tuesday morning.
Tony Bowman @ Jun 26th 2007 10:46AM
nice use of the ken burns effect in the video. i bet it's just a fluke. i don't think you'll see 80 gig iPhones. that would canibalize one of apple's lucrative markets. what you WILL see is an 80 gig or more regular iPod, without Safari and without phone capabilities.
Tom Boucher @ Jun 26th 2007 10:46AM
If you notice it's 7.46GB until they do the sync, then it changes. i'm betting this is a mistake vs. some magic phone we don't know about.
R1cebrner @ Jun 28th 2007 3:08PM
Maybe the whole thing was a mistprint from the door. ITs 40gig and 80 gig versions? That would possibly make we want to switch to att
Chuckles McGee @ Jun 26th 2007 10:56AM
Fudging with an 80 gig iPod sounds most probable. If it was legit, the drive is either SSD or traditional. No way is Apple putting a moving hard drive into some phone that's going to be slung all over the place during normal use. So if an 80 gig iPhone was in the works, it would have to be a SSD- but the cost of an 80 gig drive is more than the iPhone itself. So since either SSD or traditional is improbable, I'll conclude that it's not an iPhone being shown. Probably made using the one 80 gig device that plays with itunes: the iPod.
top.slacker @ Jun 26th 2007 1:26PM
Also, Wedding Crashers isn't available on iTunes at the moment.
harpreet @ Jun 26th 2007 11:14AM
that might be steve's personal iphone!!!....may be apple gives him these kinda perks to stick around!!!
T @ Jun 26th 2007 11:13AM
why wouldnt they have used an 8gb nano if they were faking an iphone?
Ignacio @ Jun 26th 2007 11:43AM
Because they wouldn't be able to show a movies section.
Ominx @ Jun 26th 2007 11:20AM
All future upgrades will be SSD, so 80GB isn't going to be an option. I'll give it 2-4 weeks before someone cracks it open and upgrades it to 32 or 64GB SSD.
anonymous @ Jun 26th 2007 12:46PM
I wouldn't give it that long. 2 days and it's done.
Ryan @ Jun 26th 2007 11:30AM
Couldn't it just be a bug in the iTunes software? after all 7.440 MB times 10 is 74.40. A line from Office Space comes back to me, something about too many decimals...
harpreet @ Jun 26th 2007 11:39AM
7.440 MB times 10 is 74.40.
wasn't this suppose to be 7.440 GB
Rob @ Jun 26th 2007 11:39AM
just think how much an 80gb iphone whould cost if an 8gb costs $600
tim @ Jun 26th 2007 11:29AM
It's just a production mistake. Shit like this happens all the time in agencies, usually due to absurd deadlines or clients who don't deliver assets (or both). Simple video and Flash animation are usually the domain of junior staff or last minute contractors, which compounds the potential for mistakes. The only reason this is surprising is because legend has it that SJ reviews EVERY piece of marketing that goes through Apple.
Gabe @ Jun 26th 2007 2:00PM
amen to that, i can vouch for the complications that occurs in marketing agencies for corporate spots, we never get all the assets.
Ugli @ Jun 26th 2007 11:39AM
I'm a tech writer, and we fudge screen caps like this all the time. In fact, we often have little contests in the office to determine who can release captures with the highest fudge percentage.
Yep, it's THAT boring of a job.
In other words, I wouldn't make too much of this until the thing is literally in your hands with an 80GB capacity.
Ugli
randy @ Jun 26th 2007 12:15PM
I have to agree. Here's most designers I know: tell them the decimal point is WRONG and move it, and you'll spend the next 10 minutes getting lectured about how artisitcally the decimal point truly belongs there.
(sigh. so ultimately you've got to tactfully admit to them that you really appreciate their creativity, but really, it just really needs to be fixed. PLEASE.)
Wim @ Jun 26th 2007 11:41AM
If you look toward the top where it says all he info about the iphone itself, it says 7.XX (not sure exactly what the last nubmers are)
Chris @ Jun 26th 2007 2:38PM
Who has 12 gigs of other material, i heard that the OS is only two gigs or something...
Some Guy @ Jun 26th 2007 12:01PM
It has to be a mistake. Around 00:06:21, the Summary tab shows the capacity at 7.27 GB, while the bottom section shows the capacity at 74.40 GB.
prashantp @ Jun 26th 2007 12:20PM
Oh c'mon - this is a story?!!
