Good news: Verizon stores open today!
We're not even making this up, Verizon actually sent out a press release to let everyone know that their stores will be open "all day" today -- and what's more, you'll be able to purchase and take home any of its 18 offered music phones! We guess we have to hand it to these guys for making an effort (no matter how feeble) to draw some attention to themselves on iDay, though. Wait -- no we don't.

Ok, who else thinks that picture is kind of scary?
Dan @ Jun 29th 2007 8:05AM
Is that Ryan Reynold's forehead?
Zadillo @ Jun 29th 2007 8:02AM
I think the point here is supposed to be that they're staying open til 9 PM today (I guess Verizon stores normally close earlier?). There was something else about this, where they said they are doing this because they are positive the people waiting in line for iPhones will either have second thoughts, or not be able to buy one, and they will come to the Verizon store and buy a phone and service there instead.
Jason @ Jun 29th 2007 8:02AM
It got news on the front page of Engadget didn't it? :-) I guess their mission was accomplished.
I just signed up with Verizon yesterday and picked up a Q. So far I'm loving it. It's not an iPhone, but it was also a lot less than $600 and I can play NES games on it. :-)
james stringer @ Jun 29th 2007 8:05AM
Lol and now From Sprint - Who needs an iPhone when you can have a sweet Sanyo with extreme features like, Retarded menus, Vocal Voicemail, and magical buttons that look and feel physical, but really they magic ones designed by Steve Balmer himself that alow you to type "LOL im so fukd rite nw" and "Babe im srry I was drnk @ tht party lst nite k....I ddnt mean 2!" way beter than some Self correcting POS that those other kids have.
WHY SANYO, WHY DO YOU MAKE SUCH CAP!?
Jamar @ Jun 29th 2007 8:23AM
Don't bash Sanyo, bash Sprint. Sanyo *does* have really sweet phones (search up "KDDI" on Engadget Mobile to see what I mean) but Sprint for some reason or other doesn't want to offer them.
brad @ Jun 29th 2007 8:53AM
thank you for that, i needed a good laugh this morning
Tony @ Jun 29th 2007 8:05AM
Just a bunch of poor saps that just realized what a idiotic decision it was to turn down the iPhone when it was proposed to them. What makes them think that opening all day is going to sell any of that junk that they haven't been able to sell all these years. LOL. Goes to show how stupid some CEOs really are.
Jesse @ Aug 22nd 2007 7:21AM
You're the dumb one.
Jamar @ Jun 29th 2007 8:26AM
As much as I hate to say it, Verizon has some good exclusive stuff (Casio G'Zone). They just hamper it with crap firmware, that's all.
Azzy @ Jun 29th 2007 8:58AM
my girlfriend loves it when I touch her G'Zone
Jamar @ Jun 29th 2007 12:08PM
Jokes like the one above me are the reason I wish that Casio called this phone the CanU in the States like they did when they sold it in Korea.
Tom @ Jun 29th 2007 8:31AM
I'm sure that that is the funniest picture I have seen on Engadget - ever. I feel the need to put that picture on my business card.
WK @ Jun 29th 2007 8:32AM
All I know is I'm not getting in my car tomorrow, cause there are going to be hundreds of idiots on the road playing with their shiny new iPods while driving... the roads of America will be unsafe. Thanks Steve!
Nate @ Jun 29th 2007 9:50AM
Yeah thank god you don't live in Cupertino.
superpixel @ Jun 29th 2007 8:35AM
Awesome Verizon! Still miffed Apple wouldn't allow you to disable Bluetooth on the iPhone? Take your spanking like the naughty baby you are and shut up. Helio should be crawling to you shortly.
Johnny Appleseed @ Jun 29th 2007 8:39AM
Oh no. Quick. We shoulde e-mail or call Sprint to see if they're gonna be open today, all day! Someone call call T-mo up also. We can let these guys go down. We've got to show our support for them. Because when AT&tingular starts screwing us over, and they will, who are we going to turn to? huh?
rockintom99 @ Jun 29th 2007 9:38AM
FrankTheCrank,
You need to take a smart pill. Retard.
Bobarama7k @ Jun 29th 2007 8:46AM
kinda reminds me of a, uh, cingular store, those places are creepy, and the employees are out of an HG wells novel. i dont care about the iPhone, ill carry my AV500 and cheep prepaid phone. but the sony vaio UX looks pretty nice, except for its size.
Chuckles McGee @ Jun 29th 2007 8:58AM
Oh man wow! I bet they have overhead lighting, carpeting and everything too! Probably air-conditioned, y'know, might be a good place to cool down, rest a little, maybe pick up a SOUL-BINDING SERVICE PLAN that prevents you from EVER purchasing an iPhone lest the Verizon zombies come and take away your first-born child. Still, I'm sure many readers are probably looking at little Billy and that iPhone, thinking about which one has 8 gigs of flash storage, movie playback...
techwarrior @ Jun 29th 2007 3:46PM
that was funny
(pure sarcasm)
SBro @ Jun 29th 2007 9:00AM
Can't you think of any better insult other than gay? Oh, and you might want to take a look at your grammar, too. I realize the use of "your" and "you're" can sometimes be a bitch. You sound like an idiot.
MikeInVA @ Jun 29th 2007 9:08AM
I have to go down to the Verizon store today anyways - I think I will tell the sales zombies that I "read their press release and wanted to come down to see what all the fuss is about"
Brumbo @ Jun 29th 2007 9:09AM
how uncanny :-)
Sanskrit @ Jun 29th 2007 9:13AM
While I, as a Verizon customer on the verge of buying a new phone (and not even looking at the iBrick) am glad that VZW's stores are open today, I really question the value of putting out a press release where the employees apparently seem to be all on that "happy happy joy joy" cocktail of amphetamines and helium.
J @ Jun 29th 2007 9:14AM
You've got to admit, this is pretty funny. VZW is conceding the spotlight, but releasing a tongue-in-cheek press release? I like.
John Doe @ Jun 29th 2007 9:49AM
I think I may go to one of T Moble's stores and buy something just for the hell of it. Fuck the iPhone.
DIMEBAG @ Jun 29th 2007 10:38AM
That is a completely different product my friend…
Cody Boring @ Jun 29th 2007 9:57AM
I find this to be very werid! Since VZW turned down the iphone when it was offered to them. I personally think they have something else brewing up and noone knows about ;)..
techwarrior @ Jun 29th 2007 3:52PM
hope so! apple was asking to much from verizon anyway so ether way it still makes sense
murph @ Jun 29th 2007 10:14AM
how about VZW gets their testing rears in gear and release some new Windows Mobile phones ASAP. i want my i760 or 6800!
AdvidG @ Jun 29th 2007 10:14AM
Wait....wait.
No rebates, discounts or specials...
Just....'will be open'?! And, pushing their same old lame Crap?
I don't have to tell you where they can stick their 'Musical'(But mostly shit-like) phones and their all around horrid service...do I.
Ok, then.
Kiwi616 @ Jun 29th 2007 10:27AM
My thoughts exactly...how about a competing phone also. Shake a leg VZW already....Apple gave you a 6 mo lead time with this announcement, not to mention that they offered it to you already, so you knew it was coming.
Staticoranges @ Jun 29th 2007 10:44AM
I agree. Sure Verizon has phones that at one time were big competing phones, like the RAZR that they got just as the hype was wearing down, and similar phones. But seriously? Wasn't the only phone they had exclusively that had any hype surrounding it the Q? I think Verizon has to get into this race, with an "iPhone Killer" or whatever you want to call it.
Johnny T @ Jun 29th 2007 10:56AM
If the iPhone is as big a hit as they claim it will be then it just proves people have become so materialistic that they've gone retarded. Who doesn't already have a cell phone and an mp3 player? Why spend $600 on an iPhone if you already have an iPod and a phone that works just fine?? I was really expecting/hoping this would be a flop and no one would buy it except some apple fanboys..
abates17 @ Jun 29th 2007 4:38PM
Sure, everybody has a cell phone, but most people hate theirs. Believe it or not, some people will actually pay more for something that works WELL. Have we learned nothing from the iPod?
Whackmushrooms @ Jun 29th 2007 10:58AM
LOL .. what is this fark now?
Adrian Williams @ Jun 29th 2007 10:59AM
If someone dumps Verizon for Att they're nuts and this is coming from a Att customer
Ben @ Jun 29th 2007 11:02AM
How can VZW kill anyone when they disable their phones "Modern" Technology, ex: Bluetooth.
Darrell @ Jun 29th 2007 11:13AM
Pathetic!
daschupa @ Jun 29th 2007 11:36AM
Just to let you know, they'll also be open in the mall and are fully stocked to rape you as you walk by.
Tony @ Jun 29th 2007 11:59AM
Can you hear me now? Can you? We just lost all our marketshare! Can you hear me now? Hello?
LOL!
seanC @ Jun 29th 2007 12:00PM
I am so glad everyone here knows so much about running a wireless carrier. Honestly though, I hope the iPhone goes through the roof... at that point it will be too commonplace for the hipsters to like it and it will be uncool. Then, FINALLY, we can stop hearing about it.
Luigi @ Jun 29th 2007 12:32PM
Wasn't Verizon the first to turn down the iPhone...?
Woried, much?
Universe Man @ Jun 29th 2007 2:31PM
Well, that seals it. I decided a long time ago that I must buy a music phone on June 29th between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm. I had my eyes on the iPhone, but obviously Apple and AT&T aren't going to accomodate me. Thank goodness Verizon is open and selling music phones during those hours. Chocolate it is!!
techwarrior @ Jun 29th 2007 3:50PM
wtf
M Peterson @ Jun 29th 2007 4:29PM
Uh oh....Sprint just put out a press relaese saying they will be open till 12 a.m. or later. There new slogan - "Getting a non-iPhone is great, even late."
CincinnatiStar @ Jun 29th 2007 11:19PM
Lets think about this....
evdo > edge..
hmmm i would rather stick with my lg vx9900
bernard @ Jun 30th 2007 12:25AM
this would be more compelling if Verizon ACTUALLY RELEASED the xv6800 we've been waiting for FAR TOO LONG!
