Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in the first 30 hours
According to Apple's Q3 financial results call, Apple sold 270,000 iPhones during the first 30 hours of sales -- the quarter ended on June 30th. Apple admitted to and apologized for activation problems, which would account for that 146,000 activations figure that AT&T released yesterday. As for sales past June 30th, Apple isn't saying much, but they do plan to be able to announce at least one million in sales by September 30th, and 10 million by the end of 2008. Apple reiterated launch plans for the iPhone in Europe, stating that it'll have the phone in a few "major" countries (Most likely UK, France and Germany) by Q4 2007, and hit the rest of Europe with the phone in 2008. Apple did mention "we'll have details later in the quarter about which carriers we'll be working with" as in, plural, so take that for what you will. During the call, Apple also admitted to an impending cashflow from AT&T, which had been speculated, and is most likely based on contract renewals and new subscribers that the iPhone nabs for AT&T. Apple will start counting the revenue in the September quarter, but didn't say anything else on the subject while dodging questions about Yahoo!, YouTube and Google contracts.[Thanks, Wildthing]

Do you think they'll beat 1 million Zunes?
They sold 9.8 million iPods in this last quarter alone, so I doubt they are that concerned with the Zune.
Not to be a person to repeat myself but, what's a Zune?
Ferrar or Lamborghini?
Which should I buy?
Or maybe I will just keep the money in Apple for now.
The stock is at $150++ in Afer Hours trading!!
YAY!
Such a big success eh? 1:2 managed to activate. Great work Apple! I always knew you were the best! SCREW M1CRO$UCK!!!!!!11!oneeleven!!
/sarcasm
Phones sold/shipped June 29th online weren't shipped next-day/same-day delivery.
errr, where are the missing 700,000 iphones ?
I bet in a warehouse name "iFlop".....
Sales picked up a few days AFTER, once people saw their friend's and family's iPhones. So you cant say its a flop from the first 2 days of sales. What a douche.
Um, hello moron. The "missing" iPhones went on Ebay.
"Sales picked up a few days AFTER, once people saw their friend's and family's iPhones."
That is actually not true. Analyst have shown that demand has dropped greatly from the first two days of sales....
Wait, Im actually responding to this as if you actually knew what you were talking about.
Analysts also claimed that a variety of different number of iPhones had sold, from 400,000 to a million. But obviously, Apple isn't even close to a million. So do they actually know? Nope, they haven't got a clue. So why should their guess be any more accurate about sales dropping?
i dont care what you say about the iphone thats a lot of fucking phones for ANY company. and just think its the first one out there in this market. hmmm i wish i had stock in apple right now
The difference is that there was UNPRECEDENTED hype for this phone. No other phone in the entire history of phones has ever had this much hype before launch.. I was expecting 1 million units sold day 1; esp. since they were boasting they had that much stock.
@humpty.
Thats a crazy estimate. $1M on first day? Its $600!!!! And it has a 2yr contract with ONLY ONE COMPANY!
Humpty, show me where Apple ever claimed to have a million phones ready for launch.
uhmm Marce,
your calculations are wrong
500 per hour * 2000 stores * 30 hours = 30,000,000 phones.
To get to 1,000,000 in 30 hours, they need to sell 17 per hour per store.
@MarcelV
Where did you learn math? 1 million phones, divided by 30 hours gives you 33,333 phones an hour. Divide that by 2000 stores and that gives you 17 units per store. Take 60 minutes in an hour and divide that by the 17 units per store and there would need to be one iPhone sold every 4 minutes during the 30 hours in order to sell 1 million phones.
At least 12 year olds can do basic arithmetic!
1 million in 30 hours? Can't be done with 2000 locations in total. That would be 500 an hour per store. Some reality check, please...... Must be 12?
here come the ifanboys spinning..spining the RDF....
The matter is...RAZR sold more than this phone each day of a monthr for a period of time...Nokia move certain phones at the same rate or better than this phone. For the amount of hype this thing got...I expected 1 million sold in 3 weeks ...not 3 months..if EVER.
and please don't call it an smartphone since we can't install applications on it.
quee in 3...2...1...0...my post is flooded by ifanboys defending this phone
shoo! Troll
So, your telling me that established, and dedicated cell phone manufacturers sell as many phones as the new kid who also makes computers, DAPs, and software? Hmm, so what are you really saying here? I think you may be confused as to what is being said here.
Say what you must say to feel better for yourself. hey, i have a slvr and i'm not complaining. I also have 240 extra dollars from the 12 point jump in my AAPL shares.
Actually, douche....
Motorola sold 130,000 Razr's in 30 days...Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in 30 hours.
Way to know your numbers, a$$clown.
Right on Fred! But then again, don't expect any intelligent or informed contribution from Ricky PC Bitch here, he is mostly talking out of his ass.... as clearly demonstrated by Ryan here: "Motorola sold 130,000 Razr's in 30 days...Apple sold 270,000 iPhones in 30 hours." All he ever does ever is spread FUD, and he can't even do that properly. A moron in its purest form...
Aren't you a fanboy yourself? Most of the people here that throw that term around in regards to anyone remotely on the side of Apple, are huge fans of anything anti-Apple. You revel in anything negative about Apple, and try to downplay or dismiss anything positive that is in the news. You ignore facts, facts that are proven by multiple sources - or you just label it "RDF". $150 a share, when it was $100 less than that only a year ago - is that RDF? IF you are really concerned with RDF, focus your attention on the Whitehouse, the implications are far more serious. You rush to post in comments about something your not interested in, you intentionally antagonize to get responses, then act as if no one was supposed to respond to your flamatory statements, then label them as a 'fanboy' if they do. Apple deserves all the credit they are getting, they have overcome quite a bit and are an extremely successful & iconic American company.
I think you are in desperate need of human interaction a.k.a. a friend or two.
To Ryan:
You are either making numbers up, or have very bad math skills.
At the height of its popularity, the RAZR was selling 15 million a quarter. That is more than 1 million a week. How you come up with "130,000 Razr's in 30 days," I suppose only Apple PR can figure out.
Before you run around insulting people and throwing around made up numbers, I suggest you learn some basic google skills.
I dont know what youre talking about Lloyd. Moto only sold 750,000 razrs in its first quarter on the market. Now, it did sell quite well later on, hitting 50 million in its first 2 years.
But the Razr a phone that was obscenely subsidized. They were practically giving them away after its initial high price ticket. The iPhone on the other hand is a $500-600 device and it sold 270k in its first 30 hours. I think thats pretty fucking good.
I just made enough money off of apple stock to buy an iphone now..
(and a BMW, bought it at $119 whoo hoo!)
119? a little late to the game are we?
HEY !!!!, up here.."thump Thump Thump" we are UPHERE, you know the guys who live upstairs CANADA...what aboot us, we have cell towers and buying power. Our dollar is at par yet you can charge 30% more for everything...$599 in the US will be $679 here guranteed.
if it wasen't for the shitty beer down there I would move down one floor...
You canucks kill me! drink a xxx for me bro.
270K was probably about all Apple had available as all stores were out of stock Saturday evening, they were able to restock quickly during the following week, but those went fast as well. I picked up an iPhone the Thursday after its release for a friend at a local Apple store and got the last 8GBer from that morning's shipment. So I bet the 270K for the first 30 hours was a result of lack of inventory in the channel, not a lack of demand.
I think there were two stores still with stock. Either way, I think it's likely that Apple will hit 2M in Q4.
I still havent seen a single person with an iPhone and none of my friends have seen an iPhone yet either. When the black Razr came out I saw loads of people with them in just a couple of weeks. So where are all these iPhone users?
Well, I can balance that out as there are at least six people at my work who now have iPhones, four of them had Cingular 8125 WM5 phones before that. Eight of my friends have also purchased iPhones. Funny, all of them purchased 8GBers too. Not sure why Apple even offered a 4GBer.
Apparently you don't live in new york. I started seeing lots of them being used by random people on the street within a couple of days of its launch.
So?
Where I live, Ive seen none.
Oh, and I work in downtown Chicago, Ive seen none there either.
I've seen one iPhone since they've come out and that was at a convention with 3,000 people in a major city.
hey genius, they just announced sales figures, we don't need your useless anecdotal evidence. duh.
Yeah and when the black razr came out, it was $200.
How many razrs did you see when they were $500
Haha, People get ranked low because they havent seen an iPhone. Applefanboys are a unique bunch. If youre wondering how its possible for me to not ever see an iPhone then it might have something to do with my city only selling 105 units on launch day (it was reported by the news, we have no apple store and only a couple Cingular stores carried iPhones so it was easy to keep track of sales), none of the stores sold out. You can imagine my odds when the city has around 370,000 people, it also doesnt help that Cingular is a relatively new carrier here with a vast majority of people on Sprint. So to the Apple fanboys I apologize, my post wasnt meant to damage your pride, I was only stating the facts.
With that logic I can say , "I haven't seen you therefore you do not exist."
I saw 2 iPhones in ITALY. One at the airport and one in Vatican city. Not popular? Riiiight...
So this year, just in a few Major Countries, but what is with the rest ? 2008, yeah but what means 2008? Q1 or Q3 ?
While the results came in at the higher end of expectations, they do reinforce Apple's reliance upon the Jobs machine.

Just so you guys know. Word went out to various messageboards for Apple fans to hit this blog to spin this news as a postive for Apple.
That is why all of you are now "Lowest Rank".
And before you say Im lying, I was just on one where they were told to hit this particular one.
Which one is that? I know that there are a ton of blogs that are worried about the comments on another tech blog. I know the motorola KRZR blog is trying to get the ROKR blog, and the RIZR blog to gang up on the N95 blog, and they're gonna have a knife fight later.
post a link to the blog or it is baloney.
I'd like to see any piece of hardware outsell the iPhone :)
i still want an N95
Uh, the iPhone didn't even come close to Motorola RAZR sales, and now that all the Apple fanatics have one, sales have dropped off like a cliff. Go ahead and waste yr money if you want, but there's much better phones for half the price out there, and you're not stuck with AT&T (although they seem to be the best mobile carrier right now.)
How could you possibly know that sales have "dropped like a cliff". Are you telepathic? Wait, wait... were you in the movie with the creepy albino kids and that damn village?
ENGADGET??? Do you people even read the financial reports you are reporting on? Apple did not sell 270,000 iPhones. The financial report specifically states 270,000 "iPhones and Apple-branded and third-party iPhone accessories". For all intensive purposes, they could have sold 1 iPhone and 269,000 iPhone socks -- nowhere does it say specifically the number of hardware units sold.
Read the facts yourself:
http://images.apple.com/pr/pdf/q307data_sum.pdf
Between this report and the beauty that was the AT&T quarterly report (where you stated that a paultry 146k units was miraculously the reason for their financial success, despite the facts), I think it's safe to say that this site has no business reporting on the stock market.
I trade stocks for a living, and this kind of "reporting" is completely irresponsible.
If you are basing your career and livelihood on a tech blog (no offense guys) YOU are the irresponsible one. I love Engadget, and I love the trolling, and fanboyism, but I'm not relying on you guys to help me feed my kid, sorry.
But admit it.. it drives up stock price right? Remember ppl are stupid..make money off them.
Their job isnt to be accurate. It's to spin the news for Apple.
You, sir, don't get it. The layman buys stocks too often without proper research. Stocks become inflated when the consumer facing blogs and "news" sites report inaccuracies, thus leading the sheep to purchase irresponsibly on hype.
Case in point, it wasn't but 2 months ago that Engadget's reporting of fraudulent information caused the AAPL stock to lose billions in a single trading day.
So if you think a measly "tech blogs" have no affect on the market, you are sorely mistaken.
Actually, you sir don't get it. I think it's patently irresponsible to base your livelihood on rumor mongering. The thing you fear is that all the Moto stock you have is going to lose value because Apple is kicking the shit out of everybody. To be honest the early adopters have gotten their phones, and iPhone sales are going to level out, which means the stock will too. But you should actually be happy about this egregious error on the part of Engadget because now all of us stupid plebes are going to run out, and sell our children to buy Apple stock.
He's right, but the CFO said 270k iPhones sold. Listen to the webcast.
So truly I'm not sure which one is right.
Besides the point, Apple has already shaken up the entire cell phone market, hell, the entire tech market with an absolutely revolutionary product. Even if you dont like it or say it isn't feature-rich enough, you can't deny that the innovation is unreal. And multitouch will change everything. Look for more products like this and constant improvements on the iPhone in the future from Apple. If that isn't enough to drive the AAPL stock through the roof, then I don't know what is. And justifiably so. They are one of they only tech companies around that's actually innovating. Unless you count the table sized "future computer" from Microsoft.
1 iPhone and 269,000 accessories. That definitely doesn't equal 270,000. Learn basic addition, or you shouldn't be trading stocks.
I just had to laugh at 'intensive purposes'. Does that even make sense to you? Try this on for size: intents and purposes. Ahhh.
@Ryan
Do you always talk like an Apple commercial? Seriously, "They are one of they only tech companies around that's actually innovating." You must be joking. The tech sector is huge an plenty of other companies are innovating.
Not sure, but I suspect that the units total only includes the iPhone itself, and the $ total includes both the iPhone & accessories. Otherwise, the units number is a pretty meaningless statistic.
Yo moron - Apple clearly said during the conference call with analysts that they sold 270,000 iPhones in the first 30 hours.
By the way, it's not even 30 hours, as all the Apple Stores were open at 6 pm to 12 am on Friday and 9 am to 9 pm on Saturday. That's 6 + 12 hours or just 18 hours of sales (with the exception of the NY 5th Avenue Store, which is open 24/7).
270,000 units in 18 hours sounds pretty damn good to all but the craziest, frothing-at-the-mouth apple haters.
> For all intensive purposes, they could have sold [snip]
say it with me ...intents and purposes...
"For all intensive purposes"
Wow. Really? Does that phrase even have a meaning? You want people to respect your opinion with an opening like that?
It's 'for all intents and purposes'...
I'm with Maddox on this one
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone
Disregard that, I suck cocks.
Anon strikes again.
" "we'll have details later in the quarter about which carriers we'll be working with" as in, plural, so take that for what you will."
Multiple countries = multiple carriers. I doubt its anything more than that Wont be surprised in they keep with the 1 carrier per territory model they have in the US
Can we honestly trust these so-called reports/statistics?
I remember hearing about Zune and 1 Million - and there were definitely a lot of people who had 'doubts' that Microsoft was providing true numbers. It seems like we can always not trust Microsoft with their numbers
And yet any big numbers for Apple is great, isn't it?
It's just not fair.
@ michael,
MS stated that 1M Zunes had been shipped... not sold.
I have an iPhone, and roughly $60,000 in AAPL stock. Save your fanboyism for a Zune-boy.
This kind of behavior is unhealthy for the market, regardless of whether I'm currently profiting from it. People make money on stocks from long-term investments. Hype can be as damaging when it's good as when it's bad -- Bubble's always burst.
Misreporting on financial disclosures as a publically traded company puts people in jail. For the most part, they are trustworthy, although often spun in a favorable manner -- Flexible Statistics 101.

Wow this reply system is borked. It pasted my comments under the wrong string -- twice no less.
WOW, YOU ARE BETTER THAN ME! If you know that your money is made on the long term then you know that the hype isn't REALLY gonna hurt you that bad. Let me ask you this: Is it hype if it's true? Look, I just disagree with you. But hey, I'm sure that the 60,000 DOLLARS! of APPLE STOCK pretty much cancels out the opinion of serfs like me and makes your ePenis like ten feet long.
You're talking about ePeens, and I'm talking about factual reporting and fiscal responsibility. I only own a few stocks and AAPL is one of them. I have every right to be concerned about the healthy trading of the stock.
Take what you will. Have a nice day.
You sir, are such a sore loser.
I understand that you're proud of one of the companies you may keep stock in, but you do not have to be so obsessed and fanboyish over such a thing. Calling me a fanboy? Look who's talking.
And who said I liked the Zune? I was talking about the numbers! The statistics! I never mentioned how Zune was better or anything.
BTW: I own stock in both AAPL and MSFT. And I'm happy to have both of them. Whether you like it or not, both Apple and Microsoft are very good companies, and they both are still making cash. It may be hard for you to believe, but Microsoft is still going big and strong. They make good software, and people use it. So you don't tell me what's the best stock, because I know which ones are.
Well at least we now have a relativly accurate number of how many Apple fanboys are out there.
Well at least we now have a relatively accurate number of how many Apple fanboys are out there.
…and a fairly accurate number of windowzealots that post like complete morons. Congratulations Mr. Doe.
Oops!! Ok, can't count.... Yep, I really shouldn't comment if I am in between two meetings aqnd only had a minute or so.
Guess I am getting older.... :D
Maybe that's a lot of phones. I don't know. But from my experience, since this phone came out, I've only seen one person using one in public. And that was yesterday on the plane.
You must not hang out with the "iNCROWD".
see what i did there...its a little "i" just like in iPHONE
If a person lives in a small town in, say, Idaho (population 5,000), they might not see an iPhone for years. Of course, if you live in the Big Apple (NYC) one out of a hundred people have them. This is the city of big bucks and trendy people. In a year, probably half the people in metropolitan NYC will need one if they want to be picked to get into a trendy nightspot. Sodbusters will probably never have a need for an iPhone.
who can read all this garbage? This article got 270 000 comments in the first 30 seconds.
@ those who voted down GriffTannen...I'm glad you're back on the job.
I was getting tired of voting down those who put iphony in negative light (correctly or incorrectly). This great burden I could only shoulder for a day or two...soo many posts so little time.
Now go buy more icrap and support the master.
Oh, really. Your burden... let's see... ah yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude.
Maybe if you spent a little less time judging people based on baseless assumptions and more time getting to know real human beings, you'd be less inclined to decide that your silly stereotype applies. APPL-ies.
Please stay in school...
iPhone in Canada ?????
Hmmm.... iPhone deals in the offing for the UK, France, Germany, Kazakstan, Elbonia, Upper (and Lower) Volta .... where the Hell is the plan for Canada??? You know, Steve -- that great big, rich place above the US with one of the best mobile network speeds in the world and 35 million consumers. Rogers was rumored to have it a few months ago but that has disappeared, it seems.
What the Hell ???
That has been reported on by the newspapers. Rogers would have to decrease prices so drastically to match at&t that it would kill sales for every other plan they offer. Bottom line is that no iphone in Canada for the forseeable future...
It's all hype. Only fools buy products from Apple. They said that the typical iPhone buyer is a white male, aged 20-29, college-graduate and making $100,000 a year. There can't be too many guys like that left to sell 10 million iPhones to. Plus all of those have to be Apple fanbois since PC and MS users don't buy iPhones. There's no more demand for iPhones. AT&T stores have piles of boxes of iPhones collecting cobwebs. The iPhone fad is over with. Fini. Now moving on to the 6G iPod.... Oh, snap, my Apple stock just jumped 9%..... Now where did I leave off.... Apple will never sell 10 million 6G iPods because.....blah...blah....junk....blah.....over-priced.....blah....blah....no new features....blah....no original ideas.....blah....over-hyped....blah....
Yo, pathetic Star Trek virgin nerdboy:
AT&T have already said in their earnings report that 65% of iPhone buyers specified WINDOWS as their OS on the online activation. Exactly what rock have you been living under?
@Bob Atkinson
Commenting on an OS fanboy war also qualifies you as a "Star Trek virgin nerdboy"
@Bob Atkinson
I was being sarcastic. Anybody will buy an iPhone if they like it just as they buy iPods. Your attack is uncalled for. That's okay. Let some steam off. It's good for ya.
Constable, I don't think they get you.
It's obviously very hard for people used to the mid-90s Apple to admit that Apple is a major player these days. To them Apple will always suck, even if they come up with something that can cure cancer, AIDS, AND is the best iPod ever.
Just need to point out here "which" doesn't necessarily mean plural.
I haven't seen anyone with an iPhone either.
Do I get "Lowest Ranked" too?
