20GB PlayStation 3s available for $450 at GameStop
Just days after the 80GB PlayStation 3 hit the online marketplace, GameStop seems to be clearing out the defunct 20GB iteration for the low, low price of... $449.99. Yeah, that's not nearly as low as we'd like to see either, but it is still $50 lower than your next available option (that'd be the 60GB flavor). Still, we're sure these things will sell like hotcakes for one reason or another, but unless you simply must have a PS3 today regardless of HDD size, we're just not feelin' the value here.[Via Joystiq]

Still cheaper than most stand alone Blu-Ray players.
Jeff @ Aug 6th 2007 3:26PM
I saw one at the mall for 499$ marked 20 gig. I was sure they were just being lazy and using old stickers or something from the original 20 gigs.

What? Did something change between Winter 2006 and now?
BaBaBooey @ Aug 6th 2007 3:34PM
For once it's cheaper than an Xbox 360 ... Elite that is.
K_G @ Aug 7th 2007 7:15PM
You're right but probably for only 24 or so hours....the elite is due to drop in price in tomorrow or by Sunday at the latest.
ssuk @ Aug 7th 2007 9:24AM
not for long...

>>What? Did something change between Winter 2006 and now?
you mean other than 6 million units shipped and 4 million units sold?
and obviously sarcasm is weeping for you right about now.
Eric @ Aug 6th 2007 4:15PM
???
My point was simply that very few people seemed to want the 20GB version. Weren't there something like 90 60GB units sold for every 20GB?
Cyclone @ Aug 6th 2007 3:38PM
"but it is still $50 lower than your next available option (that'd be the 60GB flavor"
Not really, they don't make the 60gb anymore. You can still find them on store shelves though, right next to where the Wii is supposed to be.
Dark Zero @ Aug 6th 2007 3:46PM
Isn't this the version that you can add a bigger hard drive to?
nick @ Aug 6th 2007 5:08PM
You can add a bigger drive to all versions.
Stevelo @ Aug 6th 2007 3:47PM
Missing the card reader and WiFi....not worth the $50 discount, IMO.
TheTruth @ Aug 6th 2007 4:47PM
IMO IMO IMO.. Why does everyone say IMO? OBVIOUSLY it's in your opinion, or you wouldn't be saying it. It's redundant to say. It's obviously not FACT, which by default, means it's your opinion
jere @ Aug 6th 2007 5:41PM
In your opinion
A.J. C. @ Aug 6th 2007 8:03PM
Oh yeah dude, I forgot about that. Definitely not worth it.
AlexP @ Aug 6th 2007 3:48PM
Gamespot sucks.
Trade-in your Xbox and they're giving you a whoppin' 30 bucks! ... Only to sell it later for $70 more.
bob @ Aug 6th 2007 6:00PM
I think you mean Gamestop, not Gamespot. I rather like Gamespot... the website that is.
john @ Aug 6th 2007 8:13PM
Both Gamestop and GameSpot are corporate trash. And don't sell that used Xbox. Hack it and turn it into a media player with XBMC!
alexhrose71 @ Aug 6th 2007 3:58PM
I'm not understanding Sony's tiered pricing model by HDD size when the HDD is replaceable with much better (faster and higher capacity) third party off the shelf drives.
Really, whats the point ?
AlexP @ Aug 6th 2007 4:00PM
If I connect a thumb drive to it, will it use it for storage? :0
Jeff @ Aug 6th 2007 4:10PM
Please educate me. What is the hard drive for? Like, why, specifically, does it matter what size the drive is?
Chris @ Aug 6th 2007 4:21PM
Mostly game caches. Project 8 has a 286MB cache and Oblivion has like a 4.5GB cache. You can also install demos from the store onto the HDD, put trailers on there, or put music on it. You can always swap out the HDD later with any 2.5 inch drive.
Iscariote @ Aug 6th 2007 4:36PM
This would be a good deal if the 20gb PS3 had wifi. $50 off for the smaller HDD and no wireless, you might as well just buy a 60gb on Amazon with no sales tax, since a $450 PS3 will cost you about $475 in any state with sales tax.
Matt @ Aug 6th 2007 4:38PM
Eh, for $399 it would be quite a bit more compelling.
michas_pi @ Aug 6th 2007 4:46PM
I've always wanted a 20GB PS3 since I don't care about the Wi-Fi or built-in card readers. It plays everything that the 60GB model since they're both PS3s. I'll buy one.
Dustin Solis @ Aug 6th 2007 4:47PM
I guess the only value in this is that for $449 you get the guarantee that you won't get a PS3 with gimpy backwards compatibility. Hard drives are cheap, and I think Sony is adding USB WiFi support to the PS3 at some point.
carlos @ Aug 6th 2007 5:58PM
The PS3 already supports USB WIFI adapters.
Diane @ Aug 6th 2007 6:05PM
add me into the "it should be $399 and that's what I'm waiting for" camp, for $100 less I'd accept it's features missing from the 60GB brethren
Joe @ Aug 6th 2007 6:10PM
If it's one of the originals that comes with the Ricky Bobby Blu-Ray disc, then it's a total deal!
BigReg @ Aug 6th 2007 6:20PM
I have a 20Gb PS3 because I don't give a crap about stupid WiFi on the console nor a lame memory card reader. Why? There are no less than 10 SSIDs visible inside my home at any given point in time. With the UPnP/DLNA support I can stream music and photos another machine.
I've had my $499 game playing BluRay player for 8 months and have no regrets whatsoever.
darkstar @ Aug 6th 2007 7:12PM
i actually wanted the 20gb!! 2 months ago, called all the gamestop stores in my state, they said it was sold out. wow. im confused why they lied if they have a bunch now?
misterhearn @ Aug 6th 2007 8:19PM
@ Preston
As of the moment all the thing is good for is blu ray, but I'd buy the 20gb version and just upgrade the HDD myself.
but if the rumors are confirmed the Elite will retail for 450.00 with six times the space and much wider game selection, but if you want a BD player than get em while their hot!
Mike @ Aug 6th 2007 10:13PM
I have seen mountains of 60gb units at local Best Buy stores. I haven't seen a 20gig in months, save for the one I bought during launch.
I would jump on the 60gig units since the new 80gig ones lack hardware backwards compatibility.
booger62 @ Aug 7th 2007 12:35AM
That's A Fact, Jack!
