The
Sling Media family have been quite the busy bees of late. First, the TV-transporting company has just gotten approval on a brand new, unnamed variation of the
Slingbox, which forgoes the external Slingbox HD Connect cable used with the Slingbox Pro (that gives you component ins / outs) and instead includes a single set of component hookups right on the box. Additionally, during a Revision3 interview with
Blake Krikorian (Sling Media's CEO) the venerable Om Malik managed to get Blake to let loose new about the now-rumored Slingbox HD, which (after some arm-twisting) Krikorian says is coming in "January," though in what year he wouldn't say. Honestly, if it's any later than 2008, it's too late.

I just use ORB. It's free and it does the same thing.
ItsTheOMGShow @ Aug 10th 2007 10:31PM
wrong. you can't control the channel guide. can't flip through your On Demand offerings. Can't select your DVR recordings. That's what you get when you're cheap.
Maestro @ Aug 11th 2007 12:06AM
Let's see..I CAN record through Orb and control it. I CAN control my channel guide. And I don't care about on-demand.
Oh, and my High End PC costs a heck of a lot more than a sling box, so no, not cheap. Just smart.
ItsTheOMGShow @ Aug 11th 2007 1:04AM
Ah, so it's NOT the same thing after all. thanks!

If it came with integrated WiFi, I would buy it.

Technology like this, like DVR, and wireless streaming from PC, should really be integrated within the HDTV. I hope slingbox contacts the top HDTV manufacturers to try to make that happen.
DAZA @ Aug 12th 2007 7:37AM
LG already have a lineup of TVs that have built in DVRs. Twin digital tuners allow you to record two channels simultaneously and playback something too. We've had them in Austrlaia for a while now, I sell them at work. Also have 1080p to boot and come in sizes from 32" to 52". But they are the only manufacturer doing it at the moment, and you are right, they should be built into all HDTVs.
jwbeck17 @ Aug 12th 2007 12:04PM
Hmm... If this unit (as well as the Slingbox Pro) has component out, doesn't that make them "HD" already? I have the pro and, although I think it's a great product, don't get too sucked in to the HD element. In order for HD to work well you need to be streaming through a high-speed network, like a Gigabit wired or N wireless. Even with that you are limited to your house, as the quality reduces once you hit the Slingbox from outside your network. And knowing Sling Media's ability to stick to release schedules, I would anticipate this sometime mid/late NEXT year. Aren't we still waiting for the SlingCatcher? (It was scheduled for a Spring release of this year!)
MegaZone @ Aug 11th 2007 2:06AM
This box has a built in cable-modem and a tuner that does NTSC/PAL/SECAM. Read the full manual and FCC test report. ;-)
And the SlingCatcher was never scheduled for 'spring'. I was at CES when it was announced - it was listed as 'summer' at the announcement. Now it is 'fall'.
Chris @ Aug 11th 2007 6:41PM
Who needs a built in Cable Modem? Sounds like a pretty weak upgrade to me. Where is one with ATSC and QAM tuners? Hopefully it will at least support higher res HD streaming.

Does anyone else find it interesting that he said january and that is when Macworld is kicking off? Isn't their rumors about slingmedia and apple talking? What would happen when you put the sling box with the appletv and the iphone. To me it sounds like a nice combination instead of competing against each other.
MegaZone @ Aug 11th 2007 5:36AM
Presuming 'January' wasn't just something he pulled out of his ass as a joke, I doubt it has to do with MacWorld. January is also when CES is held, and when Sling traditionally announces new products.

Ok...how about a Symbian client for God sakes...Sling is a prick in that department and looses quite a few customers (me being one) for not releasing S60 version.
MegaZone @ Aug 11th 2007 5:51PM
The Symbian client is already being worked on. They have one for the '3' network, which was developed specifically for that network. They're generalizing it for wider release now.
Matt @ Aug 12th 2007 8:38PM
That's what I meant...nobody can download it except 3 subscribers. Also that client was not developed directly by sling but by another company strictly for 3's use with Sling. That client has been available for over a year now but again only on 3's network so over that period of time Sling could've gained quite a few customers.
Matt @ Aug 12th 2007 8:42PM
Guess what? I guess Christmas is early this year... I just read on Darla Mack's site that Sling is signing people up for Symbian client beta. I signed up of course...have you ?
