Does Apple's iPod touch have Bluetooth?
Yeah, you've seen it before, that's the iPod touch. But take a closer look at the upper-right corner of the display. See that little icon? Right, Bluetooth, as in the not announced Bluetooth radio in Apple's new iPod touch. Is this just a snafu from Apple's arts-and-charts team or something more say, AVRCP and stereo A2DP related? At this point, Apple's not saying and we don't know. But you'd better hurry up and click that Read link because that Apple-harvested picture won't be around for much longer.
Update: It's still there, and spreading! Now discovered on Apple's US store and UK site.
Update 2: Ah, sorry to bum y'all out, we just heard that Apple didn't actually include Bluetooth in the touch, meaning the screen shown above isn't entirely accurate. We'll let you know if we hear more.
Update 3: Two more bits: we heard from a pretty decent source that the touch internals are very similar to the iPhone internals, and that there is a Bluetooth chip in there -- it's just not activated. We'll all find out as soon as someone dismantles one of these little buggers, but whether or not that's actually the case, we took a peek at the touch's FCC filing, which went live yesterday. It only contains tests for WiFi, meaning if there IS Bluetooth in there, at very least they're going to have to get it cleared again by the FCC before flipping the switch.

I was just asking myself, "WTF! is A2DP!??!!"
I believe they will release bluetooth support with the release of Leopard.
tiger has great bluetooth support...
What I was WTF-ing yesterday was that Steve had the Beatles as a ringtone, and you can only do that with, what 500,000 selected iTunes songs... Does this mean that the Beatles are finally coming to iTunes and that was Steve's way of saying that?
Give Peace a Chance is NOT a Beatles song. It's John Lennon.
Could it possibly be the shuffle logo instead of bluetooth? just a chance??
@ booooopz
Tiger has REALLY bad bluetooth support... there is no A2DP and no AVRCP support in Tiger i.e. can't use stereo headphones on Macs, can control (prev, next, volume etc) from headset.. what is up with that?
Leopard is supposed to remedy this but no support in Tiger kind of blows.. i know there were some legal issues by allowing this.. effectively circumvents the DRM...
Tiger only has the most very basic bluetooth support
What I want to know is, where can you get that 'landscape' mode stand?
The stand comes with it!
it comes with a stand by the looks of things
In the box
iPod touch
Earphones
USB 2.0 cable
Dock adapter
Polishing cloth
Stand
Quick Start guide
Great! :)
That's nice....but an integrated stand would be cooler....like the Archos 605 Wi-Fi.....
I'm bound to lose that stand somehwere....then it probably costs $20 to replace...
And an integrated toaster! And popcorn maker.
the stand can be put on all the way around top, bottom, sides, the iPod is the same depth the all the way around
wow, I like this ^^
Also, they are prolly trying to release BT functionality with some sort of Apple branded BT headphones .
Hey Apple: We want BT for a few things:
*To view our cell phone pictures on that nice big screen!
*To get on the Internet via BT DUN
*Wireless Music
Please make it happen!
Bluetooth HiFi Speakers and BT headphones would help make this a great device.
Hey ItsTheOMGShow - with all those Bluetooth features you want from Apple in the future, why not just buy a Nokia N800 and have them now? The N800 does everything the Touch does, and a whole lot more...
If the Bluetooth is anything like the iPhone implementation, it wont allow file transfer or anything of that sort. The Bluetooth on the iPhone allows Bluetooth headphones, speakers, and possibly song control (although I'm not sure about that). As far as Internet sharing, file exchange, etc., my RAZR has more Bluetooth features in that regard compared to my iPhone.
I was searching last night trying to find out if the new iPod Touch had BT connectivity. Also, am I the only one who sees the iPod Touch's possible ability to handle VOIP? It has almost everything required save the BT for a Headset/Microphone and the software to make it possible. Even if this isn't in Apple's gameplan, maybe another hacker/modder can get it to work. How sweet would an iPod Touch VOIP phone be. A man can dream, can't he?
jim, you're not the only one... another one dreamin' here! ;-)
I was thinking the same thing..get a SIP client or Skype on there!
not mentioning bluetooth on the product launch would have been so so so so so so stupid if they have it. because everybody on the planet(who cares, which isn't that many) now assumes that the touch lacks bluetooth, and if it had bluetooth it would be quite useful for DUN and a2dp.
possible voip? sure, any device with a microphone and audio out and a fast enough cpu is "possible voip device" if you think it like that. however, does it even do instant messaging is another question.
if you want skype buy a n800..
Think three words: "Cannibalizing the iPhone." I bet they had BT included, and someone a fair ways into development said, "Oh, shit -- what about.....?"
yup skype can be installed, well it can be installed via IM+ on iphone so i think its safe to assume it can be installed on the touch as well. i was just waiting for the word of some variation of a mic/bluetooth whatever have you and im all set. btw i ordered up the 4gb iphone in the meantime (too much of a deal to pass) but i would like more memory.
I think there was a site posted here on engadget based on skype for the iPhone... Same screen
http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=skype&platform=none
If you wait 6 weeks you can find out for sure and save at least $150.
That'd be hysterical, if it didn't happen to me...
Precious Roy~ Precious Roy~ making lots of suckers out of girls and boys~
It's very possible that the iPod Touch has bluetooth. Apple will most likely announce it at a later stage when they have launched some sort of accessories like remote looking like the current one but with no wire, and uses bluetooth instead. A new Apple HiFi might also be in pipeline.
After all Apple never launches a feature unless it can be used properly.
If they did build in Bluetooth then the Skype/VoIP people will rejoice.
Well he's with a bunch of ten year old girls...and today is a school day...I've made my assuption and im happy with it
this is probably a mistake. Even the reflection of the ipod screen is wrong!
Good observation, aside from the stand, everything in the reflection isn't even on the Touch's screen.
Yeah, flip, rotate, and change some levels to get 'Nelly Furtado/Afraid/Loose.' I don't recognize the interface with that pause and info button. I'd post a link to an image, but don't feel like getting an email from Apple legal today!
Never mind...it's coverflow.
Gosh, I hope so - I'm trying to figure out what cellphone to get - right now I'm leaning for a Sony Ericsson with stereo bluetooth, but if the iPhone gets it I'll make the jump to that for sure, but stereo bluetooth is a dealbreaker for me since I want to use my phone as a wireless music player while jogging and at the gym...
the iphone does have bluetooth.
You're right - it has bluetooth 2.0, but for some reason Apple hasn't enabled Stereo bluetooth for music, just mono bluetooth for a one ear headset for phone calls... so it's no good for working out at the gym.
>Anthony
go to your local card shop or online and they usually sell them to hold up and display baseball cards.
What about the reflection - seems to be some text there - woooh, spooky-wooks!
The reflection is playing Nelly Furtado's Loose. Just fyi. I'd love to be able to play a movie and music at the same time, over two different sets of bluetooth headphones... think that's what they're saying with the pic??? :P (Joke)
BUT DOES IT have LOUDSPEAKER!?
No
and with good reason too, if io put up with another bunch of 11 year old girls listening to crap techno 'music' out of a speaker at the back of the buss i will just have to kill them all
No you won't as I'll have killed them first.
Why are you hanging out on the school bus anyway?
No one said school bus.
Its showing on the UK site aswell.
http://www.apple.com/uk/ipodtouch/gallery/index10.html
wow, better and better!
Italian version of the site has that too:
http://www.apple.com/it/ipodtouch/gallery/index10.html

Same photo on the UK store (and probably other EU stores - I haven't checked). The strange thing is that the US store version of the same shot has a badly photoshopped still of Zoolander in place of the iPod screen so that none of the icons are visible. Weird - why are they hiding it in the US and didn't they get the memo in the UK/Germany.
you can watch videos in full screen with no info or anything on the screen, the other photos woth it are just showing what it looks like with the info/menus showing. if you watch the learning guide on apples site theres a short demo on a video and the info fades away after like 2 seconds of not touching the screen.
Bluetooth would be a real selling point for me, at least if the bluetooth would allow me to connect the iPod Touch to my mobile phone and surf the web like that. I have an 3G Flatrate here in Germany, so surfing via Bluetooth on the phone would be no problem and a lot more convenient than searching for a WiFi hotspot.
US store link:
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/gallery/index10.html
Why is it only showing up in photos from Europe? The U.S. pics don't have the bluetooth icon.
I think the art department first needs to pay more attention to effects like the reflection under the ipod which is of a completely different screen than the one it is supposed to be the reflection of. While the Ipod may or maynot have bluetooth, I'm guessing it can't bend space and time and show reflections from previous uses.
when you look in some photos when a song is playing there in the play symbol next the the battery level icon and what apears to be a bluetooth icon maybe just be the play, pause,or stop icon.
Makes the iphone very overpriced when you consider the long contract payments you have to make, hmmm BT / WLAN all we need now is a microphone and VOIP hack! Pity all those people tied into their 600 dollar plus contract phone just to get some fancy UI features when it appears free from any contracts 2 mts later with larger flash memory...
It all depends on what your needs are - personally I held off buying an iPhone precisely because I was essentially waiting for this (that is, a phoneless iPhone). But now that it's out, and especially now that the price of the 8GB iPhone has dropped to $399, I am thinking of getting the iPhone anyway now. On one hand, I do like the idea of just using some other phone, but the iPhone now appeals to me to some degree because it could do the job of one device for me, rather than buying something like the iPod Touch and, say, a RAZR2.
If the iPod Touch does have bluetooth though, outside of headset usage, I'd be really curious if someone were able to find a way to allow it to tether to a cellphone's bluetooth connection. That might be the ultimate combination there, especially tethering to a 3G phone.
Add it to iPhoto and reduce light effect (with light effecrt adjust thingy from 08)
Looks like the reflection ha some different interface, than the one above.

Wireless data
* Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
* EDGE
* Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
Where did you read that?
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
thats the iphone - not the iPod touch
Going to be hell lot a better deal than Nokia's internet tablets ;)
That's your opinion...
Is the iPod Touch open ??? Don't think so..
So forget now software on it or it's the browser thing...
What does the N800 has (out of the box) that the iPod Touch doesn't:
email client
rss reader
skype (voip)
Google Talk (video chat)
internet radio
FM radio
notes
pdf reader
i didn't even mention the software that people make for the N800. N800 is still a great device!
(And yes it also plays your music and video even through build in speakers!)
The latest OS also has flash 9 support so you go to the proper YouTube
While I agree the N800 is still in the running for those apps (I have one), fact is even with the bumb in RAM it got since the 770 the buggar still lags on common tasks.
It seems to me that although not open source, the iTouch and iPhone are very responsive and efficent. Add to this that the iPhone and possibly the iTouch have an ARM processor twice as fast as the N800, I'd take Apple were I buying today.
The N800 does have a few advantages though:
Screen is 2.5x the resolution
Built in kick stand
Expandable storage support up to 32GB with SDHC support
However, I'll bet that the iTouch gets even more support and software through hacks than the N800 does legitmately through open source.
For my personal feeling this shows a video download from youtube and the icon shows Wifi connection.
the Wifi connection icon is on the left, look by the battery indicator on the right. Thank you for sharing your personal feelings
I have thought about this like 4 years ago.. an MP3 player with BLUETOOTH so you can finally send songs to eachother.. maybe it's just a design fault, maybe they just copy pasted the iPhone screen and just changed the upperleft corner saying "iPod"..
Is that rad playing on it?
It will be enabled/announced together with the Apple Stereo Bluetooth headset and iPod wireless Hi-Fi, around the release date of Leopard (which does support A2DP).
A guy can dream, can't he?
Personally i think from the angle it was shot it could quite possibly be the 'Speaker' as in this picture
http://images.apple.com/euro/ipodtouch/gallery/images/08_large20070905.jpg
Personally thats what it is!
What "speaker" are you talking about? You mean the home button on the bottom? This thing doesn't have a speaker
What's in the reflection? It doesn't match the image.
I think it's haunted. Apple moved the cover art but they didn't move the songs. THEY MOVED THE COVER ART BUT THEY DIDN'T MOVE THE SONGS!!!
The reflection interface is actually in playing mode ( coverflow mode ) and it playing
Nelly Furtado
Afraid
Loose
Strange I find, since for a reflection I'd always use the same image. So I guess that Engadget is right :this is just a snafu .
maybe they'll charge 1.99 to activate it, so people aren't so angered about the iphone price drop lol.
But my Moto Rokr S9's will certainly be stoked to play with some ipod touch action.
Ooooh and perhaps a retooled CDMA Iphone *touch* ( to fend off exclusivity complaints) that would be sweet.
Plus I don't see why no one likes the 4gig version of the iphone, its not like most people's music collection will fit on 8gigs either. Oh well I like my env still, 45 with unlimited in messaging pretty sweet.
has anyone else noticed that the reflection is completely different to what is showing on the screen? take a look
Check 3 comments above.
I can't wait for the ipod touch battery replacement hate to start...
Really? The Denmark site folks? The US site doesn't have any BT icon, so I says no. The US is always right...remember?
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Yeah, we're talking about the iPod touch not the iPhone matey.
iPhone != iPod Touch
You do realise we're talking about the IPOD TOUCH, not the iPhone?
I'm sure we'll know in a few days when someone gets one and rips it open.
you mean in 3 weeks?
why would they disable bluetooth if there's wifi anyway ?
what I'd like to know, will it be able to connect to my phone with BT and use edge or 3g to connect to internet ? that would be awesome
I really hope it has Bluetooth because at this part of the world (Iran and Armenia) that's the most practical way of connecting to the internet using a handheld device (BT/GPRS). So for me personally lack of BT would render it useless. I read online news on my Palm T3 everyday. Steve, it's not software, it can not be pirated here, consider the costumers at this part of the world and you'll get their $s. Like Nokia does (and also other PC parts manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte, Dell, ...).
If it has BT then you can link it to a GPS too............
But then it would have goodlold maps wouldn't it? Or it's hided, or ..
No I don't believe apple put's BT in this one. You need to keep different products appart. It isn't good for marketing if you have different products with slighty different specs but a different name.
Makes people confused .
It's a Screen shot of an iPhone pasted in the iTouch. Easy as that. They where in a Hurry and didn't notice.
I think Evan is right, they put it up in a hurry!
If thats A2DP stereo bluetooth streaming I buy it, otherwise not, period. I'm not using cables anymore.
If thats not AD2P I'll buy the 80 Gs Classic and a Bluetooth stereo transmitter.
Did nobody ask at the press conference yesterday? I'm surprised if nobody did ask that question being that so many tech companies are selling PMPs with A2DP support these days. Hey Engadget, have you guys asked Apple that question yet?
Wow - looks like you could play Doom on this.
Having Bluetooth on this particular iPod would almost make up for the lack of Gb's.
almost.
has anyone seen the Plug port yet, maybe there is a speaker after all. or maybe I've missed the photo. Would be awesome to have a speaker on it for more then one person vie of YouTube.
