Nokia pounces on iPhone price drop with Google ads
One of the few hundred thousand that dropped 600 bones for an 8GB iPhone instead of the moderately more palatable $399? It's alright, Nokia still hearts you, and they want to prove it. Espoo wasted no time after yesterday's announcement in taking out Google ads encouraging disheartened, empty-walleted iPhone owners to check out its new MOSH service -- a collaborative mobile media site run by the phone giant -- to "salvage" their devices. With all due respect, Nokia, no amount of free content is going to put $200 back into our pockets, but we appreciate the thought nonetheless.

Nokia has got to be feeling the heat from this price cut. They had their top-of-the-line phones priced similarly (or a bit higher) than the iPhone...now they are way more expensive.
xbit @ Sep 6th 2007 1:44PM
My N95 cost me ~$100 on a 12 month contract.
Nokia really must be feeling the heat, what with the US making up about 80% of their business...
ryantrevisol @ Sep 6th 2007 2:05PM
What carrier was that? Does it come with MyFive(FingerDiscount)?
Also what's your standard deviation for the ~ symbol? $300?
Colin @ Sep 6th 2007 1:14PM
Haha, I just checked, now it only has a link saying:
Congrats, Late Adopters
iPhone drops $200. Now you get all
the iPhone for 2/3 the price.

Good stuff.

Apple is also advertising. Searching iphone drop price leads to an apple add congratulating Late Adopters and linking to the Apple Store.
Dax @ Sep 6th 2007 1:15PM
Is everybody who paid $200 more for the phone really upset? Im not. Most Apple customers arent exactly poor, and if you are, WHY spend $600 on a phone to begin with? We all knew the price was going to come down. Im sure there is going to be a lot of anger when the HSDPA model is introduced shortly as well.
CharlieX @ Sep 6th 2007 1:22PM
Anyone, myself included, who wanted an iPhone regardless of the $600 price tag shouldn't be upset = If you can blow that amount on a cell phone, you're obviously not worried about the money. What stings is a 33% price drop after only a handful of weeks on the market.
Adhik @ Sep 6th 2007 1:19PM
These adwords aren't written by Nokia or Apple Marketing. They are outsorced by google to India.
noazark @ Sep 6th 2007 1:21PM
i think this $200 sudden price drop is cute, just shows us all how little these things are actually worth.
not sayin i wouldnt have willingly handed over $600 for one though.
Magallanes @ Sep 6th 2007 1:50PM
Isn't cute at all, it's not like "now, we are giving it for a cheap", it's more that the first phone was expensive on purpose and Apple abused of the first buyers.
johnzilla @ Sep 6th 2007 4:01PM
@Magallanes: Apple abused the early buyers? That makes no sense whatsoever. They offered a product with clearly stated terms and conditions, and a clearly stated price. Anyone who accepted their offer has absolutely nothing to complain about. Nothing whatsoever. If you don't like the offer, don't take it. Everyone knows cell phone prices go down...it isn't like this is a new deal.
james @ Sep 6th 2007 1:21PM
People that I hardly know are coming up to me and saying "how's it feel to be a sucker?". Maybe I'll get a Nokia.
Phreak511 @ Sep 6th 2007 1:39PM
Well, gee, James...
You'll switch phones because some nimrod starts calling you names?
How old are you? 12?
Adrian Williams @ Sep 6th 2007 1:49PM
Apple Fanbois still saying it was a good buy at 600$ but those same people would be laughing at Sony Fanbois if PS3 had a 200$ price drop 10 weeks out hell even Zune waited longer to drop its price
///Not a Fanboi just stating the facts
kuzu-b @ Sep 6th 2007 1:51PM
There should be a law that anyone that bitches about a price drop because they bought a product should be refunded their money, and banned from EVER purchasing that product again. For life. I am sick of this whiny shit, people are so annoying these days. You KNEW what the product costs when YOU decided to buy it. You KNEW that at some point the price would be lowered, by how much and when is irrelevant YOU already made your purchase. Obviously it was worth what you paid for it to you when you paid for it, otherwise you never would have bought it. What someone else paid for it is irrelevant. if you wanted to pay less for it, you should have waited for the price to drop. Whiny ass bitching little children if I was Steve Jobs I WOULD give you a refund. yeah, I would take that 200 dollars and shove it straight up your ass.
Kennyb123 @ Sep 6th 2007 2:01PM
Preach on, brotha! AMEN and HALLELUJAH!
Thanks for making me laugh.
bcamp92979 @ Sep 6th 2007 2:23PM
AMEN!
joe23521 @ Sep 6th 2007 3:10PM
I can see your point, but don't you think a 33% price cut after only a couple months is a bit extreme? I think the loyal Apple customers have a right to be pissed here.
kuzu-b @ Sep 6th 2007 3:52PM
No. If they are so loyal, that they have no problem paying 600 dollars for it in June. They paid for the right to walk around as the first people to own Apples new toy, and they got that. If they didn't want to pay 600 dollars for it, they shouldn't have paid 600 dollars for it. Dropping the price now or dropping the price a year from now affects the people who were waiting to buy one, I don't see how it affects people who already bought it. You made your fucking bed, now lie in it.
Constable Odo @ Sep 6th 2007 4:26PM
A hooker asks for $600 to have sex the first time. You say okay. A week later, she asks for $400 to have sex the second time. You shake your head in disbelief and ask the hooker why she charged so much the first time. She answers "Because I could. You got screwed for $600 the first time and now you're gonna get screwed for $400 the second time, so what are you griping about?"
The way I look at it, no matter what price you pay, you're still getting screwed. Get over it and move on.
glimmerkirk @ Sep 6th 2007 1:57PM
still too expensive for a jukebox phone.
Ahmed Jaber @ Sep 6th 2007 2:02PM
Yeah, make fun of Apple, Nokia. Then turn around and phase out your (Non-US 3G)American N95 three months after it comes out.
Calviin @ Sep 6th 2007 2:15PM
I heat it when people say bones instead of dollars or bucks.
kuzu-b @ Sep 6th 2007 2:17PM
yeah, especially since bones are dominoes.
wolf @ Sep 6th 2007 2:38PM
and what are your feelings on people who say "heat" instead of "hate?" like/dislike?
Calviin @ Sep 6th 2007 3:43PM
I would probably assume it was a spelling error, since heat is close to hate in spelling, but bones is not at all close to dollars or bucks.
webregistration @ Sep 6th 2007 2:53PM
I don't care a bit that Apple dropped the price of the phone. I'd also pay $600 for it again today if I had to. It is a great product and I knew the price would come down after I bought it. So what? It doesn't change the fact that the iPhone is one of the most well executed products I've ever purchased and that I use the heck out of it almost every day.
o29 @ Sep 6th 2007 3:04PM
Well, I didn't buy an iPhone and still don't plan on buying one, but I still sympathize with the early adopters. Yes, I'm sure they all knew that the price drop was coming sooner or later, but no one predicted it would come this soon, and certainly no one predicted it would be cut by $200.
joe23521 @ Sep 6th 2007 3:04PM
In addition to the price drop, I just found out that I only need to dish out $20/month extra for the unlimited data plan in order to upgrade from my dying RAZR.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but if by Christmas time, there's a bigger version of the iPhone, I just might be able to rationalize myself into buying one, especially since I actually need both an iPod and a phone.
Zo @ Sep 6th 2007 3:18PM
If it was worth $600 to you before and you were willing to be a fool and stand in line for the thing before, why do you care now? It should only matter if you think the value was not worth $600. Then at that point even at $400 the iPhone is not worth the cost.
giggity_giggity @ Sep 6th 2007 3:21PM
Breaking News: Steve Jobs posted an 'open letter to iphone users' that announced a $100 gift certificate for the online apple store for people who bought the iphone at $599. Still not as good as the new $399 price, but at least they're acknowledging that screwing their early adopters isn't the best policy.
Matt @ Sep 6th 2007 3:41PM
I have a deep love for Nokia but they didn't exactly pour love onto the early adopters (such as myself) of their N95... at first it was hard to believe that Nokia would EVER release N95 in the US...then WHAM... N95-2 (US variant) for less money ($699 instead of $749)...and you call this love?? Nice way to stick it up the a.. of your long time supporters and no plan to offer any kind of upgrade...

Does Nokia even sell phones anymore? All I see are RIM, Samsung, Moto & Apple...
tont @ Sep 7th 2007 6:45AM
I belive that their 37% market share kinda states that they do =D
Your from US i belive? Well anyways i dont think Nokia has sayd this and if they are they shouldnt because they are do this a lot....i mean a lot example with N95 and countless other of their phones.
Nikki @ Sep 7th 2007 11:17AM
I just don’t understand the anger. You know without a doubt the price that you paid for the item is going to go down at some point it is just a matter of when. Would you kick yourself in the butt later for not waiting, perhaps. The question is do you want to wait for that price drop? The early adopters said no to that question. Well then you pay for the privilege of being the first to get it. It is just that simple. I think Steve Jobs did businesses across the country a disservice by apologizing and giving credits. Now other manufacturers will think twice about price drops and how soon they will do it. Which means those of us that aren't early adopters will have to wait longer for a price drop. I agree with the poster that said if you think the product wasn't worth $600 then you really have a cause to be angry but that is not the case. Every single iPhone user I know loves their phone so the price was worth it.
