iTunes 7.4.1 ringtones re-rename workaround discovered

First, follow the steps of the original method
- Create your ringtone, save it as an AAC file.
- Rename the m4a extension to m4r.
- Double-click to play in iTunes.
- Go back and re-rename that m4r file back to m4a. That's it.
- Plug in your iPhone and that ringtone will be added to your syncable ringtones list -- and it won't pop up the error from before.
- Play your ringtones constantly for the next 10 hours until 7.4.2 comes out.

Wow this is a perfect example of the programming prowess of Apple!! No wonder their programs crash all the time!!
They do? Huh. I haven't had any problems on my mac, but hey, your stupidity might just be a powerful magnetic field that crashes whatever you get near... and it's not as if you'd notice anything wrong with your PC constantly crashing, that's fairly normal.
Please disregard my snark if you were sarcastic. If not, embrace the snark.
In my experience, iTunes is a very unstable program.
When I tried to install it on my previous computer, it decided that the version of Quicktime I had wasn't current (which it actually was), then set about uninstalling it so that it could reinstall it with iTunes.
It 'uninstalled' Quicktime then refused to install it again because I still, apparently, had an old version of Quicktime installed. It turns out that it had screwed up uninstalling the copy I already had.
So, I went to Apple's website and, basically, it told me to speak to Microsoft.
In the end, I had to manually edit my registry before I could get Quicktime and iTunes to intstall.
So, yes, Apple's software isn't perfect.
And for once, please, can you sad little fanboys just shut up?
Nothing is perfect, but I've never had iTunes crash on any OS.
Hey look you know Apple isn't perfect and I'm still a fanboy.
But I've never had any major problems with iTunes on my Mac. I've had more on the Windows side of things. It could be apple it could be MS. WHo knows.
Why does is have to be about Apple vs MS. I don't care for MS. I don't like Windows but it has some things the Mac doesn't.
And yes I've managed to crash apps on my Mac tones of times, because I do unsupported things- just look at my crash logs.
Well, Daniel is definitely over-exaggerated.
But Apple isn't perfect either.
I have iTunes crash a few times on Dell machine and my own built system.
On the other hand I have G5 as my work station in the office. That machine is buggy as h*ll. My co-worker uses her new MacBook Pro with so many issues that keep slowing down my work (because she keeps asking for an assistant).
My first 4th generation iPod had an issue with the scroll wheel and after a few weeks of use, the screen burns until it was stollen. The second 4th generation iPod has battery problem and I sold it for cowon A2.
I replaced my iphone because the battery didn't charge and eventually died.
HOWEVER..
I hate PC with all my heart, but I have to stick with it (maybe forever). Blue screen of death a few times since Vista came out. First built the system on the QuadCore based, blazing as h*ll. Then adding anti virus, firewall apps, messenger etc, the speed demon has become an average joe.
Then I tried installing linux, and realized it was a complicated process if your hardwares aren't compatible.
So, I totally agree, nothing is perfect.
Apple, PC and even linux aren't perfect, they all have disadvantages and advantages.
I just realized how off topic this post is, but nonetheless.. fanboyism must be stopped
Best,
PS3 Lover
Mac's don't crash, right!? Right!?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALo8swTfbeg
Sure, they're really reliable, compatible with a lot and cheap! ... oh wait...
Might wanna add, you know those wonderful Geforce 7300 GTs that go into your HIGH END MACHINES? They're $50 graphics cards... and Apple sells them for $150!
Hahahahah XD
And here's some more Macs crashing, woo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT1IfOukVe4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boV9QC7dWg4
Reliability is in the name! Right...
On a Mac, when there's a problem, it isn't a problem, it's a 'feature' of the OS, when there's a problem on a PC, you fix it and move on with life. Enjoy your crippled, expensive OS... OS X will be dual-booting to Windows soon enough, none of this stupid Boot Camp crap.
I don't like iTunes, as I am a windows user and it's a bulky application. But it's anything from unstable. Apple apps are very stable, bulky, memory-hogging beasts but stable.
@SSUK: Did you try safari? lol.
My comment was all in good fun. Please don't stone me :'(.
Oh god, low rank me further. Simply because I don't share the Mac dream of being brainwashed into thinking an OS is better than another simply because a COMPANY says so.
If a company claims their product is better than others, then shouldn't they deliver? You sit there and say Macs are crashproof and then low-rank me because I show contrary evidence? Hah! Funny shit, really.
Being a Mac fanboy must have the system requirements of an IQ lower than the users age.
Oh and I don't like Windows OR Linux, but Mac just _sucks_.
ignatius... please, for the love of all that is holy. go take the ritalin that your mommy laid out on the counter for you. You really should take it. Too bad when the weekend comes, all the annoying children come online to play. -.-
And you can't even rebuttal me, just use sarcasm to prove some kind of point?
It's just hilarious when you can't back up the fact that your OS somehow is better than any other out there. Why the hell DOES Mac do it for you? Just because you had a bad experience with any other OS doesn't make Mac any better. When Macs crash, it's usually impossible to fix them on your own, not to mention impossible to trace the source. There's no dynamic way to really control processes, except that unusable interrupt key, which doesn't work.
Not to mention a fact that Apple parades around like it's the holy grail.. Macs don't have viruses.. why? Because no one codes malware for 1% of the market! No one codes software for 1% of the market! Why do you think that about three or four handfuls of software exist for the Mac and truckloads exist for Windows? Because Windows owns the marketshare. Mac can dual boot.. sure, but are you going to even consider running Crysis? No, because the Macintosh Pro tower only comes with either Geforce 7300GTs (which can't run DX10 for one thing and couldn't render worth crap.) or Quadros, not even meant for gaming, but to render 3D animation and the like.
Besides, Boot Camp isn't even supported by Apple's support, so if you manage to screw up your system doing it, good luck getting it repaired, it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg.
he did rebuttal Ignatius. what he said was that you were a child and that it's the weekend. which was spot on. anyone over the age of 20 woldn't be that upset over nonesense, the rest of us have more important things to worry about. bills... relationships.. etc.
nothign you said parted the seas or opened anyones mind.
wow really? no os is perfect? I had no idea... thanks for that mind blowing insight.
just calm down, breath, and worry about yourself and not others, different strokes for different folks. it's a big world little one.
Sorry to assume that a rebuttal was using facts against arguments. Oh god, how foolish of me to think that childish insults weren't just weak attempts at derailing my arguments.
Ok, macs can crash. its true. but being a hardcore pc user for years (in which i would not touch a mac) including building over 200 machines for buisnesses as well as my own machines, i finally got a powerbook 2 years ago (since replaced it for a macbook pro a year ago) and have to say i choose it over the pc most days. vista sucks (unstable, have and issue w/ graphics card compatibility, windows explorer issues, copy file issues, program compatibility issues (getting better by the day tho)) and xp doesn't deliver the same experience as OS X. I also dual boot as its need for my job, but i've gone from running most applications in xp to running most applications in os x b/c they are more stable. Don't insult the operating system b/c you've seen a few issues. Nothing is perfect, but i can say confidently that OS X is generally more stable than Vista, and even XP. Feel free to keep bashing mac based on individual experiences tho, i wouldn't want to ruin your fun, nor would i want you to have to add anti-depressants to the medicine cabinet next to the Ritalin.
Wait a sec... aren't you using a single Mac experience to support Macs?
Oh wait... you just said don't bash something by a single Mac experience.. why should you support something by a single Mac experience...
Makes a lot of sense, right?
You forget these companies exist to take our money.
In his defense iTunes on Windows is lame compared to its OS X counterpart. At least iTunes on Vista with a 3200+ Athlon processor and 2GB RAM.
iTunes crashes on me every time I run it (on both of my two computers). I also can't run Firefox and iTunes at the same time because they cause each other to freeze. I run Windows.
I also personally hate iTunes because there are so many other programs out there that do what iTunes does and do it better than iTunes. That's just my opinion though.
@Ignatius
You idiot. Go to osx.iusethis.com or versiontracker or any one of a dozen sites and then say that "there's no mac software." There's plenty of good Mac-only software. There's very little you can do on Windows that you can't do on a Mac. How many shitty variations on a theme do you need?
it may be a little late, but...
INTERNET FIGHT!!!
Hahaha I love the last step!
That sound you just heard? Its the sound of an apple developer facepalming...
as he gets ready to get a coffee, pull overtime, and have steve breath down his neck.
At this rate is it gonna get stupid. What next? Rename it m4b? Then m4c? They are just gonna completely close the renaming loophole now. More DRM!
7.4.2 is coming!!1
Make sure to save a copy of 7.4.1 on your computer.
even if you did, you still need to update it when the new firmware update comes out.
Hah, firmware updates. Apple's firmware updates are hardware updates.
Play your ringtones constantly for the next 10 hours until 7.4.2 comes out.
Rotfl
seriously just buy itoner its so much more better than doing all these work arounds
Is iToner only for Mac? I'm looking for a Windows program that will do what this does.
Sorry I forget that not everybody is on a mac these day. (Mr. Saprano)
Odd, since statistically MOST people aren't on a Mac. By a pretty wide (albeit shrinking) margin.
it use to be everybody was on a mac....and its funny that last year all would only swear by is pc and dis on mac just seem more hacks have been developed for mac
Well, the statistics are borked anyway. That "95%" magic number that gets quoted for Windows includes 15 year old banks of computers sitting in school libraries that I wouldn't say are technically "used" by anyone in any real way. I think when it comes to actual, net savvy, modern computer users many more users are mac users than 4-5%. Look at it this way: more than half of new PC sales are laptops, Apple has roughly 25% of the laptop sales market, so worst case they have 12.5% of most computer sales. If you include desktops I would round this and assume that about 1 in 5 computers purchased are Apple computers. 20% is a significant chunk.
I prefer to be the niche group that does stuff different
Well, even if your wildly over-optimistic estimation were true, that still covers only new computers, not total computers. And even then, 1 out of 5 users is not exactly an excuse for forgetting that "some" people don't use Macs.
You can't "forget" that people use windows. Even using your (somewhat ridiculous) statistic that "20%" of sales are now macs, there's not a huge amount of annual turnover in terms of computers. And people buying new macs are quite often - you guessed it - the ones who already owned macs. The only way you can think that no one uses windows is if you've got that kool-aid on an IV drip.
lol let this be a message to apple: People don't wanna pay $1 to use ringtones they already have!
Correction: Let this be a message to the MUSIC LABELS. Apple would love to make things like this free because it would get people to pay for more iPhones.
Clearly, the release of 7.4.1 immediately after this was raised is evidence of that last statement.
I think there's just a lot of Apple haters that want to see this as Apple programming ineptitude, but I'm guessing that Apple keeps leaving this hacking simple so it can be done... the "charging for ringtones" thing is likely to keep peace with the recording industry and AT&T who enjoy nice chunks of change from these 'services."
Apple isn't going after the iPhone hackers with more than half-ass zeal anyway... At least it's certainly half-assed for Apple: you know how they can get when they unleash the legal teams and SMS "Sick 'Em!" in a blackberry group page.
Oh and ignatious... Why do we need to take YOUR word for it when you won't listen to anyone you insult? If you say Macs suck, and we disagree, the burden of proof is on YOU, not us. Use what you want, but STFU.
I wonder when Apple is going to come out with iWallet, since they seem good at taking one's money for every dang thing.
I thought the reason they were charging was because of that copyright or license thing thing...
Apple probably found out about the ringtone exploit from Engadget. Now we're giving them another head's up... AHHHHHHH
Precisely.
By advertising this loophole so blatantly, all Engadget are doing is alerting Apple to it and speeding up the time before they release a new version to render this loophole obsolete.
Well the programmers have got to go sleep sometime.. unless they're alternating shifts.. :o
Lol.. at this rate we're going to see iTunes 7.4.50 before 7.5 comes out ("ringtones are now free!")
I don't know why anyone would buy something from those greedy bastards. $1 for the song and another $1 to use it as a ringtone? What's next? Getting charged extra if you play it on the loudspeaker instead of headphones? Too many people would hear the song and we should charge everyone in earshot of the song. Extra $1 if you want to play it on a dock connector. Extra $1 if you want to play it in the car. Extra $2 if you play it while having sex. Extra $3 if the song induced her to give you a BJ. When is it going to end?
Not too far off, actually. Hell, it's already upon us!
Quicktime still wants money for simple operations like saving files that have already been downloaded from the Internet. (If you are viewing it via the plugin -- even though you could easily download the file a hundred other ways).
It also wants money to view a video in full screen, as I'm sure many have seen. (Which is a real pain in the ass if it takes over all the file type associations -- and can again be worked around by resizing the window, rendering the crippling useless).
I did switch from Quicktime (actually, I got as far away as possible; I moved to Linux). However, because I do not use the official Quicktime player (but rather the not crippled Totem plugin), I am blocked from watching Apple's advertising on their web site. In other words, I, "a potential switcher", am not allowed to drink the kool-aid because I have not switched to Apple. And yes, I do know that it works; the video plays for a moment before the Javascript kicks in and boots me out.
They also charge $20 for anyone who wants to use Mpeg-1 and Mpeg-2 files in Quicktime. This is, again, a pain in the ass, because Quicktime is quite integrated and commonly used in MacOS; you still need to pay up so an Mpeg1 -> Mpeg4 converter can read the file.
In conclusion, don't worry. Apple is way ahead of you on this one!
They are /already/ charging large fees for trivial features (or, rather, for unlocking unnecessarily locked features), and have been doing so for a long time. It has had little impact so far, so we can assume that Appleified people will continue to not care.
Picklesworth: Quicktime does fullscreen for free now. Not sure what the point of your post is.. Quicktime is just a container, not a codec.
Picklesworth, enough with the FUD.
Apple charges a one-time fee to upgrade to QuicktimePro, where one of the benefits is being allowed to save downloaded files - you make it sound like they charge you every time. Not very different from Real Player, etc. And as for Mpeg files quicktime doesn't play, why not just use VLC player or another free program, like everyone else does?
I just don't believe you could be so technical and attentive, but leave out these age-old and common understandings of file-management... Unless you just want to BITCH a one-sided tale of "woe" about Apple and spread that FUD.
Hell I use Quicktime Alternative and it's always given me the option of playing the video in my browser or saving it.
For christs sake, just buy a real phone and you won't have to use all sorts of hacks to get basic functionality.
I know. Seriously. Who wants to play a cat and mouse game for as long as they own the stupid thing? Is that part of the iPhone experience? To have to look everyday to see if Apple released some patch to lock up their phones?
thats not true, pretty much every phone, except smart phones, on verizon come with the most restrictive bullshit software you could ever imagine.
for example, the phones they specifically push as music phones don't have the ability to use any music you download from verizon or transfer via cable as ring tones, you have to use the specific "get it now" ring tones. Good thing i use a smart phone.
but then again, i think verizon is an even worse money mongering whore than apple, i feel that apples level is at least tolerable.
and even worse,
verizon charges $2-$3 for a 30 second ring tone, where the full songs you d/l from their music service are only $.99
Zing!
*high five*
awsome...
Another cool thing that I read of macrumors about the iPhone ringtone re-name trick for itunes is that before you convert the ringtone to AAC make a back up the mp3 in another folder and right-click, get info, and you can select when to start the song and when to end it for custom rings. Then right-click Convert Selection to AAC and it will give you a new AAC file with the time durations you set.
compliments apple, this is ridicolous!
seriously, apple has been outwitted and must accept it
I don't care much for Macs, and I dislike Mac believers (I think they've taken on a cult-status already, far surpassing just your typical fanboys), but what hell does this mean:
Ignatius: "OS X will be dual-booting to Windows soon enough, none of this stupid Boot Camp crap."
How does an OS dual-boot? it boots itself and something else? virtualization? I thought Boot Camp is more like a boot manager sort of thing to get around EFI?
OK, lets try and keep this one a secret from Apple!
After the leaked "fake" Apple email that made its way on to Engadget a few months back, I wouldn't doubt it if Steve Jobs has the Engadget RSS feed setup on whatever portal he uses.
Yikes! Stop posting workarounds on such a high profile site! Apple will read this and iTunes 7.4.2 will be out within the hour, haha...
I think this whole ringtone debacle is rediculous but I don't see why everybody is blaming Apple for it. It's quite clear that it's the music companies who want more money out of their projects.
I'm sorry but apple doesn't cut that picture here. Music companies have 2000 ring tone distributors. Hell, these days anybody with dough can get a ringtone distribution license. Apple is just one of them. Since apple had control over the hardware, they deliberately locked you out from adding your own sourced ringtones. It's part of a 'seamless' iPhone experience.
Dinraj
There are 2000 ringtone distributors, but none of them are free. Why would Apple be any different? They can't allow ringtones to be transferred to the iPhone for free because this would be handled by iTunes, the same program the music labels would (theoretically) be wanting you to buy the ringtones from. No other company produces handsets AND sells music and that's why the iPhone is weird in it's ringtone restrictions: it's to appeas the labels.
Except that you have the right to cut up music you legally own (have rights to for personal use, whatever the 'you don't own what you just paid for' argument is these days), and put it wherever you please so long as it's for personal use. I buy CDs. I have hundreds upon hundreds of songs on them, and there's no reason why I wouldn't be allowed to make ringtones out of them and put them on my iPhone... except Apple doesn't let you do that. So, yeah, this is kind of really, stupidly limiting.
@ James,
Apple would have been more lenient if they were not making any money out of this. We wouldnt be getting 'point' updates in 24hrs. The clearly intend making lots of money from ringtones by having a monopoly on iphone ringtone content.
For years, other companies have bashed Microsoft over for this very issue. CONSUMER CHOICE.
Give me a reason why music companies wouldn't like MULTIPLE ringtone providers? Why cant I choose where to get my ringtones from? I'm into electronic dance music. Does apple have all the dance music ever produced to have a monopoly of content on my phone?
I'm diggin that the first ringtone they did this with was Only God Can Judge Me..
kinda ironic considering we're quazi-stealing from apple.. heh.
Alternatively boys and girls, buy a phone that let's you do whatever you want without first having to hack both the phone and the damned software that supports it to make it any good.
Quit trying to justiy your 500 dollar paper weights already.
Now don't get me wrong, I really do respect what Apple are trying to do as a company - tying form and functionality is something that many other manufacturers could learn a lesson from. But come on, charging people twice for one song is hardly playing fair, now is it?
And then having to download a 60Mb update which doesn't solve the problem that they were trying to correct in the first place - what are they playing at!?
I'm not so thrilled that Engadget apparently supports ringtone theft. The labels are only going to make it harder on everyone if the deals they come up with are heavily hacked around. Do you want to be in a hack vs. update cycle forever? Do you want Apple constantly spending time on software to stop your hacks, or spend time on more useful stuff...like iPhone copy & paste? Do you want the labels to force MORE DRM on us, and more restrictions on playing your CDs in your computer or ripping them to MP3s? Every other phone company charges you "a lot" for crappy, non-custom ringtones...so why shouldn't there be a charge for chosen clips from your iTunes songs?
How about you stop using iTunes and move onto something that isn't DRM-based? Might I suggest any other player or phone in the world?
What if I wanted to use a public domain song as a ringtone? A song released under Creative Commons? A song I create in GarageBand? What if I wanted to assign to each person in my contact list a recording of their name being spoken? What if I don't any of the default ringtones, and want to add a sound I created? Why am I not allowed to do any of these things, even if I were willing to pay 99 cents for the privilege (and, to be clear, I am not)? Because some middle-manager at Columbia Records might get mad?
It is fair to argue that I should not expect to be able to do any of these things (I sure can't with my current phone); it is not fair to argue that finding ways around the system is automatically theft. And the music labels, who are the reason for all of this? They can go pound sand.
I'm sorry but no. For one, how is it theft to use a song you own as a ringtone? Also, most phones allow you to use audio files as ringtones at no extra charge. Hell even my super old nokia bar phone let me do that. Where are you pulling this from?
@Ignatius
How is iTunes "DRM-based?" Only iTunes downloads are.
Is Microsoft DRM somehow superior?
@Bemo
You are correct. There is NO legal basis for being required to pay for ring tones for songs you already own. The exception, of course, is if you have agreed via contract not to create a ringtone out of a particular song-- this is that case with ITMS and the other download stores.
You can easily put ringtones on your iPhone, either through ssh or through iToner or a similar piece of software. Just don't except iTunes to do it for you.
err can someone teach me how to do this im getting so confused im not sure what to do
yeah! you hear that steve jobs? all of us iPhone and mac haters are laughing at you. HAHA! come on guys, lets go meet up at best buy and check out the new dell xps gaming desktops and play with the nokia 2610. Zune Halo3 edition f0r3v3r!!!!!1111eleven
like how do i get it to a acc file and how do i rename it?
pimp.
If you dbl click the m4r file, it'll create the ringtones directory for you, fyi.
Dude, Nazis were fascists. Socialists aren't even extremists; you are thinking (I REALLY hope you are thinking) Communists.
Where the hell did they teach you this stuff? I smell a conspiracy.
For some reason, this isn't working for me.
I have iTunes 7.4.1.2.
I use ImTOO Audio Encoder to save it to an m4a.
I follow the directions stated above exactly.
What is supposed to happen when you double click the m4r file? Is it supposed to automatically play in iTunes? Because mine doesn't :(
Maybe it's the bitrate or bandwidth of my m4a file?
how do i get ring tones on 7.4.1 i use quicktime to export the song as a .m4a file and nothing happened
It seems that this trick doesn't work on Windows... bummer
How the hell do I even create ringtones from purchased music? I downloaded the latest iTunes 7.4.1 but still can't figure out how to create ringtones. Any help?
they havent enabled it yet...but go to "view" i think and then you can click ringtone and a column with the ringtone bell appears
"Play your ringtones constantly for the next 10 hours until 7.4.2 comes out."
72 hours from now and counting.
To: Bemo
Sure, you ought to be able to do some free stuff for free. But come on, really, how many people are interested in hacking for that reason? They're not. They want free ringtones from pop music.
And even if you can never do free stuff for free...big deal. How much does that ruin your life? And if your answer is "a lot", speak with your wallet, don't buy an iPhone. Or use hacks only for justifiable purposes. But that's not how most people are going to use the hacks.
As for the music labels...sure, they've been fat, happy, charging too much, and providing too little. That doesn't mean though that they deserve NOTHING. And even if you do feel they deserve nothing...well, that doesn't make theft legal. If you don't like the laws, gather petitions for your Congressional representatives.
I agree that not being able to freely add free (as in speech) ringtones to a phone is not a life-ending result. Neither would it be fatal to restrict the phone to only using ringtones from a small defualt set, and not allow the purchase of any others under any circumstances. In fact, I would accept that happily if it meant I'd never be subjected to 20 scattered snippets of "In Da Club" while I'm sitting in a movie theater trying to pay attention to the screen.
But again, that was never my point. The point is, Engadget posting this hack does not mean that they "support ringtone theft". And even if they do, it doesn't mean that there aren't legitimate uses for the hack. But what steams my clams is that the only reason for the attempts at lockdown appears to be because of pressure from music labels (and not, as you seem to suggest, because of some federal regulation.) After all, no such restriction exists for the background picture, even though I could conceivably fill the phone memory with a heroic volume of copyright-violating images. The music comanies, however, seem to think that they are different and special in this regard; and I guess because of their relationship with them, Apple has to at least try to accomodate them (although they don't appear to be trying very hard, FSM bless 'em.) It just smacks of the typical kind of crap I've grown to expect from them, and I again invite them to GO POUND SAND.
You should never pay 99 cents for something that is ALREADY yours; e.g., a ringtone for a song you already own. The music companies would like to charge you for everything you do with music. But there is no legal or moral basis for them to do this.
To: Ignatius
iTunes is moving away from DRM.
And I like iTunes & my iPod.
And while the iPhone needs work, in my opinion it's the first half-decent phone EVER (big screen, web, potential for productivity apps, plus music player). If you want lots of features, for me no other phone is even worth considering. If some other decent large-screen phones ever come out, I'll consider them.
And even if you hate iTunes, iPod, and iPhone, it still matters if people hack iPhones (or steal ringtones on any phone/music store setup). The labels placed the initial demands for DRM. The labels don't want people freely copying, playing, or using music (without paying some kind of license fee). If they come up with a scheme for letting you play ringtones, and everyone hacks it, what happens for you getting legal ringtones on non-iPhones, other music stores, etc?
Are the labels going to say "Gee, that deal with iTunes worked-out so well, let's do something similar with XYZ phone/music store"?
No, they're going to say "People will hack it. Lets spend a lot of time and money making sure the DRM is really rock solid, even if in the end we'll have to charge more because of that, even if it's more annoying for the customer, and then, of course, since very little software is ever bulletproof, just by having an avenue for music onto the phone we'll have to assume some theft will occur so we'll have to charge more to makeup for that." Generally speaking, piracy benefits only pirates, in the short term, and long term screws over everyone, including the pirates, because so much money is wasted on anti-piracy schemes, inconveniencing users, and slowing the speed at which convenient technologies are made available to all.
Dude Nazi where originally socialist, but like most extremist ( either; socialist, democrats or communist) ultimately they became facist, but never acknowledge their condition.
from wiki:
Nazism, or National Socialism (German: Nationalsozialismus), refers primarily to the totalitarian ideology and practices of the Nazi Party (National Socialist German Workers' Party, German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP) under Adolf Hitler.
Hey assholes: no other cell-phone provider is also the 3rd largest music retailer. Apple can't let iTunes transfer any sound file as a ringtone for free because the MUSIC labels won't allow it. How the FUCK does this have anything to do with Steve Jobs or Apple or OS X? If Apple let iTunes do this, it would violate the music contracts and they would all pull out of the iTunes store.
There are many other phones that don't let you add your own ringtone except they have *no excuse* whereas Apple has a very good excuse: the music labels said so. So if you want your phone to play the Battlestar Gallactica soundtrack or whatever nerd thing it is you want, go bitch to Universal about it. What do you want Apple to do, kill online distribution so you can have some annoying ringtone for free? There are many simple workarounds so there is no reason to bitch.
Uh... as to how it has something to do with Apple or Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs owns apple, and Apple produces iTunes, the iPhone, and signs the deals with the record companies that screw the consumer (that is, you) straight in the rectum. I found it a pretty easy chain of thought to follow, but I guess you've got a horrible pain in your anus that's making it hard to concentrate.
Uh, good point, bad execution.
@John
How the hell do you figure steve job "owns" apple. Its a PUBLICLY traded company, meaning no single person actually owns it. Steve jobs is just the CEO. Heres a little clip from wiki
A Chief Executive Officer (CEO), or chief executive, is the highest-ranking corporate officer, administrator, corporate administrator, executive, or executive officer, in charge of total management of a corporation, company, organization or agency.
I dont see the word "own" in there anywhere.
"you guys are soooo cool because you are apple fanboys, hanging out at starbucks,"
Right, because nobody else ever goes to Starbucks. Does this mean that Windows users go to Coffee Bean and Linux Users use open source coffee binaries to brew their own?
"wearing black,"
So what color do Windows and Linux users wear? I'll assume the color of "I gave up on trying to look respectable a long time ago".
"quoting beatle songs"
Who's quoting beatle's songs? I think you are referring to Steve Jobs, but I'm not sure he's ever directly quoted a Beatles song? I'll just chalk it up to you being crazy.
enjoying your "random" superior functions on your ipod shuffles,
Huh? Apple makes many iPods that aren't shuffles. The Nano is the best seller.
"though I figured when they came out with ilife apple fanboys would actually get one. 'fraid not."
Oh ho ho you are the clever one. Apple users have no life, you see, because... ummm.... yeah, Apple sucks! Any person on a gadget comments thread talking about not having a life is the definition of irony, champ.
"keep backing a greedy corporate meganopoly."
I will: I'll keep buying Sony TVs and buying Coca-cola to drink and Nintendo videogames and (gasp) Apple products.
" guess what bill gates is a complete dweeb but he gives millions and millions to needy people."
He is and he does. Your point?
" Steve Jobs I think is saving all his money so one day he can go after all the jocks that gave him a wedgie in highschool."
Oh, I get it: Windows is better than OS X because Bill Gates has more money than Steve Jobs. No wonder the last time I used Windows it sucked: I wasn't remembering how much money Bill Gates has and thus how much he's able to give away. Silly me!
