iPhone price drop leads to sales boost
Shocking, we know. As if the price drops on the PlayStation 3 weren't evidence enough that we all like our gizmos a bit cheaper, a new report from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster claims that iPhone sales skyrocketed shortly after the (hotly contested) price drops. According to his math, Apple needed to sell some 136,000 iPhones between September 5th (the day of the cuts) and September 9th (the day Apple claimed to have sold one million of its mobiles), which meant that 27,000 iPhones per day were getting unboxed in the five-day period. Comparatively, Munster approximated that Cupertino was unloading around 9,000 iPhones per day prior to the price cuts. 'Course, even Gene doubts that the recent sales surge will be able to hold steady, but we'd say the slashings have already had their desired effect.

Price drop and unlocking should clock these numbers up, but a world wide lauch would help.
yenom @ Sep 12th 2007 2:58PM
Brian, agreed. The reason why everyone is so hyped up about iPhone unlocking isn't because they can use it on good ol' tmobile.. its because they can use it overseas. Imagine if Apple launched this thing globally now? Man, the shareholders would be kissing Steve's feet.

If the first update does not break the unlock and Apple have not announced this in Europe then I would think about importing a few dozen for sale in the UK.
FRiC @ Sep 12th 2007 9:25PM
A world wide launch would actually drive the price up for us here in Asia. Apple always overprice their products compared to the U.S., so gray market items from the U.S. are much cheaper than official local prices. Plus unlocked iPhones have already been available for several weeks.
Xzavier @ Sep 12th 2007 3:01PM
The price drop is a great start!
Now lets have free ringtones, 3rd party apps, and better sound quality when talking on the phone and Apple might very well treaten the cellphone market!
Javi0084 @ Sep 12th 2007 4:07PM
Threaten the cell phone market? Not until they offer a cheap phone. They can probably take over the smartphone/pda market but not the whole enchilada.
Xzavier @ Sep 12th 2007 7:44PM
Well I wouldn't go that far...
OS X has been on the market for 6 years now installed on some of the most best looking computers and so-called powerfulest Apple hardware on the planet. And look at their market share!
And I have 5 PowerMAC's.
Christian Gomez @ Sep 12th 2007 3:04PM
i want video recording.... that shoudl be fairly easy for the hackers.. no ?? what do i know..
Alan Partridge @ Sep 12th 2007 5:05PM
Also, seeing as they use the same software, how hard would it be to port over the mail, google maps and calendar apps from the iphone to the ipod touch?
frozenrubber @ Sep 12th 2007 3:06PM
Where are $100 Apple Store GCs? We'll tell you next week...well, I'm still waiting!
Dale @ Sep 12th 2007 4:44PM
Typically, a business week begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday. As Apple are based in California, they will be on Pacific time. I would get impatient if you have heard nothing by 5pm Pacific time on Friday.
Skaught @ Sep 12th 2007 3:11PM
The photo shows an iTunes button on the phone. I wonder when that will be rolled out?
Jorge @ Sep 12th 2007 3:21PM
Did anyone also notice that the calculator button in the photo is different than the one in the actual iPhone. got rid of the division symbol and replaced it with an orangish equal sign.
Abe @ Sep 12th 2007 3:21PM
Wireless iTunes access will be available by the end of the month for the iPhone as Steve said last week.
adam @ Sep 12th 2007 4:18PM
@Jorge

Are you serious?? This is an absolute deal breaker for me. The iPhone was going to be a replacement for my home desktop, but how am I supposed to get anything done without an equal sign on the calculator icon??? Come on, Apple! I have already sent an email to Steve Jobs, as well as complaints to the BBB, The Consumerist, and Jesus.
Tehseen @ Sep 12th 2007 3:12PM
The phone is nice, but theres phones better than this. I like the design, it looks good. I think it'd get old quick though. No keyboard, On-screen keyboard isnt fun.
Ayle @ Sep 12th 2007 3:10PM
did you actually try it?
Tehseen @ Sep 12th 2007 3:15PM
Yes, I have. I just do not like the On-screen Keyboard. I also find that it's not at all revolutionary. It's not 3G either. If it was 200 dollars then I'd buy it. Nice phone, not for me.
33scottie33 @ Sep 12th 2007 3:30PM
Why are you even commenting on this issue? This is about price cuts, not about who likes the iPhone or not.
Please post future comments at whogivesacare.com!
Actually, I think that domain name is available.
Tehseen @ Sep 12th 2007 3:35PM
I dont care what the post is about.
Magallanes @ Sep 12th 2007 3:12PM
It's funny since the amount of sales are measured every month, so this numbers just sound more speculative that a real number.

1. Overprice a crappy product.
2. Drop the price.
3. Profit!

You're doing it wrong.

My words exactly...
There is a video of the best thing that an iPhone has ever been used for.... check it on willitblend(dot)com....
Wesburl @ Sep 12th 2007 4:47PM
I know this is a silly questions, but did it blend???
I, for once, agree with Maddox on this issue...
blarvh @ Sep 12th 2007 6:23PM
@33scottie33 that is a relevant comment as it is about the price.
Why wont you post that after everyones comments and not just those saying bad about the Iphone..
YOU'RE the one who should take a break, bashing 3 comments in one thread...
Your efforts wont raise the price of your apple stock noticeably anyways.

I've always been interested in the iPhone. I've had the chance to play with one for the second time now at the AT&T store here. I'd really love to replace my current phone, because of a few problems here and there.
Once my budget is in the clear, and Apple gives the memory a bump in specs I'll be all over it. RAZRs have been on my mind a long time as well. But, it's hard not to see that the iPhone is a pretty powerful and "trendy" product at the same time.
John M @ Sep 12th 2007 3:33PM
Well this phone is incredible...I suppose if you define revolutionary as something never been done before then its certainly not...I could buy an $900.00 Nokia that does all this and more...But, the form factor, frequent updates,FULL web browser (not text based) and the multi touch too me its certainly an amazing device...Im a realtor and I dont have to use the mobile version of MLS...get the full version on my iphone...not to mention EDGE is way cheaper than 3g and its really not that much slower just some limitations with video etc....anyway, i use wifi at work and the only time I use EDGE is when out and about...The only complaint is the lack of a copy/paste feature and the biggest thing is lack of a TV OUT...if the ipod touch has it then presumably the iPhone does too and its just not enabled...not like apple has ever hid features in a device
33scottie33 @ Sep 12th 2007 3:36PM
I'm sure the price cut moved some that had to pay a ETF to buy now and not wait.
33scottie33 @ Sep 12th 2007 3:45PM
I see that iPhone news is really stressing you out bud! Maybe you should try disconnecting your Internet connection for a few days until you calm down.
gescamil @ Sep 12th 2007 3:46PM
I know that had the price drop not happened, I wouldn't have gotten my iphone, even though I got the cheaper 4gb one (I don't need that much space, it's just a portal media player for me...I don't see why I have to have every song or video I own on it...that's what computers are for...)
Thursday075 @ Sep 12th 2007 3:46PM
That must suck having a website put a gun to your head and force you to read everything they post.
Oh, wait, Engadget offers to let you view their site without apple updates. I forgot.
Your just an idiot.
FatTatt @ Sep 12th 2007 3:58PM
Who cares about the iPhone. Seriously engadget, is apple paying you? Come on! Have you seen the Zune people? Its awesome! It comes in all kinds of colors, EVEN BLUE and it squirts. IT SQUIRTS!
It is the most perfectly engineered & crafted device, EVER!
Innovation like nothign that has ever come before it.
Zune, people. Learn it, as it will rule the entire world very, very soon.
ZUNE!
spulenegel @ Sep 12th 2007 5:04PM
are you shure, the squirt comes from this ZUNE? maybe it comes from your nose or....
I never saw a ZUNE! what is it? Is it a phone in different colours that squirts? what does it squirt? do you have a link with more information?
thx a lot from uzbekistan

You said "Your just an idiot." hahahaha....
You're just an idiot.
Task514 @ Sep 12th 2007 4:06PM
Ya right!!
It's the recent unlocking capabilities and its progressions that boosted the sales!!
Unlocking is now free and it's software unlock!!
primetime4 @ Sep 12th 2007 4:09PM
Wait till some of these two year contracts expire. That is what I am doing before picking up the iPhone. The real test will be around 2 years from now.
scottzeanchock @ Sep 12th 2007 4:18PM
@Thursday
sorry... just kidding... i'm a grammar freak.
Twitchy @ Sep 12th 2007 4:26PM
SO can someone gimme a rundown of how much it will cost me to get an 8GB iPhone to New Zealand? I realise that the purchase price is now $399USD, but aren't you forced to sign up to an AT&T contract? How does one squirm out of that?
Matt @ Sep 12th 2007 4:36PM
Nope.
When you buy the phone you are just buying the phone. Now when you go to activate it that is when you have to get an AT&T setup, blah blah blah. Yet there are ways around this also, unlock through third party, unlock via software here, then you use on X carrier that supports the iPhone.
Twitchy @ Sep 12th 2007 7:19PM
Ahh, thanks for the clarification. So all I need is someone to buy the phone for me and ship it over as I can now unlock it at home if I am not mistaken *waddles off to search the internets and blogosphere for more info*
Thomas Trautman @ Sep 12th 2007 4:39PM
So....How many new Wireless accounts did AT&T get? 1,000,000? I'm guessing not.
Perhaps Apple didn't really need to partner with a major wireless company to have a successful launch.
How long before the law suits are filed?
jeffo @ Sep 12th 2007 4:43PM
iphone = junk. apple hasn't produced a product worthy of its price in years. once the 'fad' of their gadgets is over, say goodbye to apple and their price controlling tactics.
robt @ Sep 12th 2007 5:48PM
Yeah right. They are just a flash in the pan. Those guys are going to get theres!!! That will show them!!
Martin @ Sep 12th 2007 4:45PM
Yeah I found a good one:

GentalJ @ Sep 12th 2007 5:05PM
Apple would sell approx 1 million phone for each month, if the sales boost is sustained. . This is a real WoW.
