ASUS' R2E UMPC beefs up the specs, adds HSDPA
ASUS' R2H UMPC -- one of the original trio of UMPCs -- has finally ditched that 900MHz Celeron in favor of Intel's latest A110 processor. Better yet perhaps, the new R2E UMPC now combines HSDPA with 802.11b/g WiFi to live up to its previously unrealized, "ultra-mobile" namesake. There's also a beefier 80GB disk option with up to 1GB of DDR2-400 memory now supported. Otherwise, its physical appearance remains unchanged as does that 7-inch 800 x 480 display and optional integrated GPS. €1,119 (incl. VAT) or about $1,586 when it drops for Europe next month.

I wish UMPC makers would stop upping the specs and start dropping the price. Then maybe I'd actually consider a purchase.
Toots @ Sep 28th 2007 6:47AM
Obviously you're not their target market... their target market is me. And I want better specs. Prices between 1000-2000 are okay as long as the specs live up to the asking price.

Upping the specs of the new generation basically means that the prices of the old generation UMPCs goes down.
PC World in the U.K. was selling the Advent U1A (basically a rebadged Tablet Kiosk Eo i7209) for a smidge under £200.

I'm sure you agree that that is a price we can all live with!

I can only hope you next tell me Asus is upgrading their R1F Tablet to:
-CPU: Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo T7800
-Graphics: Do the same thing Sony is doing on the SZ series (Switch capable between integrated low power to higher end NVidia chip when needed)
-CONNECTIVITY: 802.11a/b/n with external on off switch, bluetooth, Cell company option
-DRIVE: DVD/CD burner with future Blu-Ray burner module promised if not included
-PORTS: 4(at least) USB ports
eSata port
Express Card Capable
sd/cf reader
-SPEAKERS: Give us something to be proud to listen to music through
-Carbon Fibre exterior like the Sony SZ series
AND... if there is anything that will make it easier to swap out to SSD HDD capable in the future, do it
If Asus does this, I will buy (along with a couple thousand share of their stock) ;)

I'm hoping to purchase one of these, but I want decent specs with decent price. I dont' see the point of desktop power on a UMPC since the whole experience is different. Mostly going to do quick and usueful stuff on it, use it as a pda, quickly adjust some photos, make notes, use google maps, e-mail on the go. I don't expect music on it, I do expect to be able to edit a document, spreadsheet on it though but nothing fancy...no photoshop, or movie editing...
the specs seem great on it so far, and I am considering buying this or a sony ux, but the battery life neeeeeeeeeeds to improve...
CapnVan @ Sep 28th 2007 7:28AM
So, basically, you want a desktop in the palm of your hand.
Pc_Madness @ Sep 28th 2007 8:11AM
I'm guessing the battery life is still a hopeless 2 hours?

No keyboard, no sale!

Get a laptop :)

I prefer one of the earlier revisons they did on it, with a 1Ghz Pentium M, 1.28GB of ram and an 80GB HDD, those A110 processors are to slow, especialy with Vista, and battery life is fine imo, 2-1/2-3 hours is what I get on my R2H (the 900Mhz Celeron one), more than enough for what I use it for.
Major Malfunction @ Sep 28th 2007 10:58AM
I don't get it. My Q1 has a 1Ghz Pentium M, 1Gig of RAM, 60Gig HDD size (I can upgrade mine to 2Gigs and anyone can install a 160gig HDD), standard screen, and it costs more than mine and I purchased mine a year ago. I really just don't get it.
Cameras and Fingerprint scanners are value added BS that is just thrown in unless that camera is 6MP and the scanner has the ability to open doors and double as a lie detector. Give us a freak'n break and give us dualcore processors, built in keyboard that can be slid out from behind the unit, a bevel that isn't the size of the state of Main, and a batter that lasts 6 hrs. Then I'll pay another $1500. I sure wish people would demand more, expect more, and not allow this quick fix of technology to take place.
The reason I purchased the UMPC is because it was a revolutionary product and I wanted it for school, work, and fun. Since it was initially released, there has been ZERO innovation, no more revolutionary product development. And they keep thinking we're okay with it.
Major Malfunction @ Sep 28th 2007 11:00AM
freak'n typo king here, I can't post once without one.

I love Asus products, but I would have a hard time buying ANY piece of electronics that said "heart touching" anywhere on it.

Maybe a pacemaker?

Hello.
Some one found aney comparission test (review, performanse) between the modells (R2H, R2Hv and R2E) ?
I'm about to buy one of them and i want the one with the best performanse.
But if the batterytime is to low...i consider the newest one.
Aney proos / coins for the different models you have experiensed?
R2H = 0.9 GHz Celeron. ?? cache.
R2Hv = 1.0 GHz Pentium M. 2Mb cache.
R2E = 0.8 GHz A110. 0.512Mb cache. at least wath i know.
