Brando's Palm Phone Jammer kills GSM calls dead
We've seen all manners of jammers before, including one or two that shut down cellphone calls, but now even Brando's joining the fun with its diminutive Portable Palm Phone Jammer. Yep, the same company known for cranking out obscure USB-related peripherals and objects that heat and / or cool most anything you need is now giving you the opportunity to scramble GSM 850-, 900-, 1,800- and 1,900MHz cellphone calls "within a 30-foot radius." Granted, these aren't exactly legal in America, but for those looking for a little revelry elsewhere, you can pick one up as we speak for $166.

Marky @ Sep 28th 2007 1:56PM
Oh yes! I agree! The quiet carriage on the train could finally be quiet!!!
Now if someone could find a cure for idiots with leaky walkman/ipod headphones annoying everyone on the bus we could finally create the peaceful environment we desire.

Those would be really good for when watching plays, movies at the theater, just anywhere where silence is golden.
PJK @ Sep 28th 2007 9:36AM
Why don't U.S. military humvees have more powerful versions of this in use to block I.E.D.'s that they say are activated by cellphone?
Nex @ Sep 28th 2007 9:49AM
We do, there is the "Duke", blocks cell and sat phone, as well as your standard rc car freqs and i believe most rf and fm freqs. there is the "acorn" does essentially the same thing using a different antenna ive got a pic of the antenna if you care for one. email me at nexus2322@gmail.com

@PJK
Well they can program the bomb to continuously receive “life” signal. And if this signal is jammed then the bomb goes off. … duh
PJK @ Sep 28th 2007 11:24AM
@Nex
Thanks for your informative response!
@Ahmed Alzayani
You're a jackass.
Simon @ Sep 28th 2007 11:38AM
Actually, Ahmed has a point there. If the bomb relies on a 'life' signal, blocking it would set it off, no?
andy @ Sep 28th 2007 11:41AM
@Simon
Yes, blocking a life signal would set it off, but I'd much rather have it go off 30ft from me (hopefully on the guy setting it) than 3ft from me.

Just guessing here, but if they had a constant cellphone line open, wouldn't that leave them vulnerable to tracking? Also it was more the "Duh" part that was jackassery.
Nex @ Sep 28th 2007 12:49PM
ive actually heard of such thing. uses a fm radio. relies on power source from the speaker.. fm goes dead. speaker recieves no signal and bomb detonates.. crazy stuff. in all actuallity tho most IED arent remote detonated anymore, because we can block their remote signal. they use pressure plate, humvee drives over the switch and detonates. or command detonated. attacker strings a wire a hundred or more feet and lies in wait. when target goes by a marker, say a rock out cropping, they flip the switch and beat feet out of there. Its scary shit. just returned from there. its a constant threat that is easily hidden

Hrm. Screw legality. Like the FCC is going to be monitoring you at all times.
This would be great to bring to the movies, the theater, class, etc...
Constable Odo @ Sep 28th 2007 9:44AM
I'd like that device. Nice way to shut up noisy chatterboxes. Almost like a portable cone of silence.
Bigshot businessman on train with intentionally raised voice with BlackBerry in hand:.... "Now let me tell you how I made my first million in two days on the trading floor.... (GSM buster quickly switched on). .....Hello..., hello..., hello.... "
Me: ... Ahh... the sound of silence.
Zach @ Sep 28th 2007 1:59PM
Why a cone? Why not a sphere?
Constable Odo @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:32AM
In the TV series "Get Smart" it was always referred to as a cone of silence. Truthfully, I don't remember what the shape they actually used. I think Maxwell Smart's shoe handset was a Nokia Wingtip 2180.

DickHardknocks @ Sep 28th 2007 10:26AM
As much as I'd love to use one of these to f*ck with people who are rude in meetings and movie theaters, I would have to consider how dangerous they could be.
For example, two days ago, a gunman walked onto ST.JOHNS campus where my sister is finishing LAW SCHOOL. Students at the school phoned campus security and a cadet NYPD officer stopped him before he could do anything. It wasn't BIG BIG news cause no one got killed (sad isn't it).
If someone were to plant these around campus (or another area) they could effectively jam incoming/outgoing phone/text signals making warnings extremely difficult if not impossible.
What good is a campus security warning system if your cellphone is jammed?
Also, the design of this model resembles a DETONATOR so I doubt you'd not be noticed with this. The better models resemble CELLPHONES because they aren't obvious.
John @ Sep 28th 2007 11:06AM
As tragic as the consequences of not having a cellphone might have been, you can't extrapolate from that some right you have to be using one. The reason these are illegal (or my understanding of it, at least) is because they operate by filling the GSM band with 'static', and a device has to be authorized by the FCC to broadcast in that bandwidth. It's not because the consequences could be dire or that you have some god given right to be in constant contact with the rest of the world.
andy @ Sep 28th 2007 11:51AM
That is sad. That's going to cost me a lot of money in legal fees and jail administration to get him convicted and locked up.
If someone at school had been armed, I wouldn't be paying a ridiculous amount of money to "rehabilitate" this guy, and no one would have needed a cell phone in the first place.
This country is so full of feel good pansies that we are totally paralyzed. Sometimes, there's just no reason to keep someone alive and if they take actions such that they never get their day in court, then that's their problem and not mine.
DickHardknocks @ Sep 28th 2007 10:27AM

For the record, I didn't low rate you. You have a valid point.
JoeT @ Sep 28th 2007 10:44AM
Please think of the possible dangers in using these devices.
The cell phone was my lifeline to my ailing mother for two years that allowed me to leave the house sometimes.
If anyone had used this and my mother died because I couldn't be alerted, and I found out who that person was, that person would soon thereafter be paying dearly, esp. if I couldn't put them in jail.
Naegling @ Sep 28th 2007 11:04AM
All you panty waists need to drop a set. I suppose in those 2 years you were never out of a coverage area? And as far as campus alert systems all they do is train you little punks to be pussies. Hell, most of you don't even pay any attention to alerts even if you get them. You are just sheeple. Ever thought of packing your won firearm? Oh, no that would be way to responsible of you; much better to just let someone else handle your security...
You dipsh*ts get blocked my all kinds of RF every day. Your seriously telling me that if you drop a call you don't move to a different area to get better reception? People shouldn't have to be subjected to your incessant chattering just because you choose to be connected 24/7 to your "lifeline".
Simon @ Sep 28th 2007 11:43AM
@DickHardKnocks:
GSM blocking = not ok.
Assault in public = ok.
I feel you should seek out psychiatric help immediately.
DickHardknocks @ Sep 28th 2007 11:14AM
Regardless the reason jammers are illegal, they should not be legal unless they are only operating on private property and all participants have been notfied jamming is in progress.
No one should have the ability to covertly cause harmful interference with someone else's electronic device. I don't give a sh*t if you don't like the conversations going on near you - that is a call the movie theater itself should make and people should be notified that jamming is being done.
If I caught someone jamming my Blackberry I'd give them a beating in public that hasn't been known to man since the days of Mike Tyson.
doctord @ Sep 28th 2007 11:07AM
Just remember, folks, it's not only illegal to USE one of these devices, it is totally, absolutely illegal to even OWN one in the US. And, it's a federal crime. Think twice before you buy -- the chances of getting caught aren't all that great, but the penalties if you do can be dleterious to your health, wallet, social life, and career!
nikola @ Sep 28th 2007 12:14PM
STFU.
JoeT @ Sep 28th 2007 11:12AM
Yes, tough guy Naegling, I would pack a firearm if you blocked the emergency call from my ailing Mom. I would be prepared for a long jail sentence, just to get you.
simplex0 @ Sep 28th 2007 11:12AM
so basically, if someone doesn't like people on cellphones they think they should be able to block their use. forget that the frequencies involved are purchased for billions of $$, provide revenues, and a vast majority of americans seem to find useful, based on their purchase. nope, you don't like their noise and don't have the balls to ask them to stop it, so you want an illegal box. good for you.

Annoyed by neighbour's Mobile Phone GSM Jammer/Blocker, which makes you can not call in or call out?
Try to install a mobile phone repeater
A normal mobile phone repeater could makes you get enough signal within 5 meters radius if there is a jammer working around you.

In spite of all the thinly-veiled threats for the times I plan to use these (Brando order #45344SD); if most people wasn't cell-holes these would not be necessary.
For example, you can put your phone on vibrate when at church, restaurant, movies, etc. I know you paid for "la Vida Loca" ringtone, but you know what Skeezix, it ain't cool.
When the phone vibrates, look at the screen, if it's not important ignore it. These calls are important: biopsy result, someone's sainted mother, etc. These calls are not: any of your buds, a telemarketer, etc.
If it is important, leave the freakin' room to take the call. Let me elaborate on that as I know it is an alien concept to many. You click "answer", quietly whisper "hello, wait a second..." as you quietly stand up and walk out of the room. When outside you can yak all you want about your enlarged prostate.
And lastly, you do not need to speak louder in proportion to the person's distance from you. I use the same voice if the person on the phone is in the same building or if they are in Europe.
Boynamedsue @ Sep 28th 2007 11:22AM
theres two kinds of people that would use this.
the first kind is like me, i don't think people should be talking on their cellphones or texting in a theater, i hate seeing the glow from peoples screens, especially when they're right in front of me. people get indignant when you ask them to stop texting because they think if they're not loud, they're not bothering you. but basically, common sense situations.
The second kind of people are the grumpy fuckers who will get all pissed at you for having a conversation on the train or in a store. Yeah, the person sitting next to you on BART is talking on a cell phone. Who the fuck cares. I think those people are just annoyed because they're nosy fuckers who want to hear the other half of the conversation.
the people i don't want to see with this device is #2 If i saw it happen they'd get to watch their 160 dollar device get stomped.
asdfm,nasdkla @ Sep 28th 2007 11:35AM
you don't have a right to control when someone can talk on their phone and when they can't Yeah, we don't have a right to talk 24-7 but you don't have a right to say when they can't
in short, these devices are very illegal and if you ignorant bitches think your god and decide to buy one to control peoples phone habits fuck you you belong in jail
JoeT @ Sep 28th 2007 12:41PM
No, it's no so much that they think they're gods, but that they know they're pussies. They prefer to hide behind a stealth electronic device which they know can cause indiscriminant harm to innocent others, rather than directly confronting the obnoxious cellphone user, which would ensure no unintentional harm, but requires courage.
Colin Jensen @ Sep 28th 2007 4:10PM
So in other words, you think you are a God who can ignore all considerations for those around you, but they are evil people playing god for stopping you without considering how important it is for you to chat aimlessly about nothing at a volume you would never use when talking to someone sitting beside you. Perhaps you are one of those who has forgotten the Golden Rule. Or a mere troll, but whatever.
And what the heck is wrong with this new generation who are so insecure they can't even be alone for a few minutes without dialing up someone and chatting with them? Use those few minutes to do something important instead like think or read and then go over a friends house later and spend some real time chatting with them instead of shouting over a crappy connection.
Also, five miles in the snow, uphill both ways, no shoes, etc etc.
Oh, and just a hint to you phone-shouters out there... raising your volume doesn't make any difference to the clarity of reception on the other side of the line. Slow your talking down, and you'll be fine.
k_no @ Sep 28th 2007 12:01PM
In my home country, armed robbers that go to homes at night to rob use similar devices so that victims can't phone out for help, since most homes have done away with unreliable land line companies anyway. I understand the many advantages it could have, but I feel America is one country where it's use could be regulated properly - not other countries.
