Palm's Ed Colligan confirms: no new Palm OS till end of 2008

Just in case you missed the mention in our post about Palm's Q1 FY08 conference call, or the earlier report about the company's new OS getting more delays, take notice: Ed Colligan did indeed confirm that we won't be seeing a new operating system on Palm devices until the end of next year. Of course, with a track record like this crew has, we're not holding our breath, and would seriously suggest you follow suit.

Amen noodle. My experience with the 700p was the one thing that was enough to sever my relationship with Palm and pick up an iPhone. From the terrible performance to the CONSTANT crashing, and then to Palm taking over a YEAR to fix the problems, it was an incredibly disheartening product experience from a company that I have supported since the original Pilot back in 1996.

What ever happened to all the resources Palm purchased from the long since dead Be Inc? I was hoping to see something good come from that. Maybe some bits of BeOS running on your Palm Pilot? I guess they spent all that money on nothing.

Palm has gone from a company that could do no wrong, to one that seems unable to do any right. Considering they had the stranglehold on PDA phones and have frittered it away to RIM and Microsoft/HTC, the only advantage they have now is very low end PDAs.

And you can't really make a lot of money there.

Most of the real innovation in PalmOS was done by Sony for their Clies - but now that Sony has dropped the Clie, there's nothing moving PalmOS forward.

I think Palm has jumped the shark.

So... yeah. Given Palm's track record with WinMo phones (awful), I think I'm going to be getting the wife an HTC of some sort. It looks as if Xohm will be rolled out commercially around here around the time of her next birthday, so that might be a good time for it.

Actually, the Treo 500v is a pretty damn good phone and the location based services/mobile TV Vodafone features make it a great low cost package.

And it looks good too - and I *hate* Windows phones!

If this is true, and they're not going to get their new OS out the door until calendar year 2009, then they're just done. What are they doing, just starting now?

My 700p is fine, but my next phone is going to be an HTC.

Palm has never been an innovator, and this is just another example that it's a corporate problem. Remember how long it took them to add color? The IIIc was a piece of crap and was shoved out the door so that they could claim to have a color device.

The Treo was neat when it first came out, but they haven't made any significant changes since the 600 was released. Where's Wifi? How about a thinner device? What about MicroSD?

That would be about 5 years between major OS revisions! Just about on track with Microsoft. Too little, too late. The cycle needs to keep in step with hardware innovation, like Unix, Linux & Mac OS X. No wonder Palm market share is drying up rapidly (Microsoft are you listening??).

I used to be a big fan of Palm and maybe I will be again someday. But this update has been too long coming and now it is even farther away yet. I doubt they will make it to the end of next year.

I keep holding out that Palm will get it's act together.

Wow. I have just read all these comments and I am quite suprised. I am a Palm fan and have been since the Pilot. I have always defended Palm and like my Treo 680. But I, like a lot of others need to upgrade every year or so. So when its time to upgrade what am I going to get now? Well there's not going to be a groundbreaking Palm out is there!?!
Anyways the reason why I am suprised is that this is the first time I have ever read so many comments where no one has had anything good to say about Palm and the first time some one hasnt stood up to defend them.
Well I am not defending them this time, cos I am bored of defending them now.

By the time PALM gets the Linux OS out the door, and gets all bugs expected in a new system worked out, it could be easily be mid or even late 2009. I have serious doubts if the company can survive that long. I finally dumped my TREO 650 running PALM last week after waiting for the TREO to mature into something really usable. No iPhone available here in Asia yet (yes, unlocked U.S. version available, no way to enter Chinese text) so I started using a Sony Ericsson k610i I had sitting around while I look around. Hey, it ain't no smartphone, but it's a pleasure to at least have a phone that works without crashing and what not. I don't know what other TREO users think, but I have washed my hands of this company, and am not holding my breath for 2009.

I have finally given up on Palm- after listening to their pathetic CEO on CNBC this week and receiving my 4TH 700p replacement from verizon in the past 6 months- it's over. I am completely disgusted with the way this company operates and the utter instability of their current products. Their updates appear to be un tested and break features while barely fixing other problems. Like someone else said on this board...

i love you, palm, since my palm III days... but die like a dog if you don't produce soon anything upgrade-worthy for my treo 650. that's right, none that you have produced since the 650 has been worth an upgrade, if one can consider the change from 600 to 650 an upgrade. suprises me when i see how many suckers like me who still clings on to the treo 650.
