Vii games: "free craps" indeed

The Wii reverse-engineering hat trick is now complete. The Vii clone just spat out a whole host of new games ready to slake your need for Happy Tennis and Alacrity Golf. Or maybe Fry Egg is more your style. No worries, plenty of options to choose from -- soon, in fact, judging by the pace of these leaks. Too bad your choice of Miis appears limited to a fluffy bunny or albino rat at this point.

why do these companies in china keep cloning and reverse engineering other companies stuff? can they be creative and come up with their own things? god...lameeee
Pedja @ Oct 11th 2007 5:27AM
Well, here is one possibility. The Wii console (as well as other stuff you are referring too) may be a bit too expensive for an average person in China (and MANY other countries as well). So what are they to do? How will they manage to spend that much on Vista, or Mac-Book, or Wii, or iPhone, or even DVD movies and who knows what ever else?
So, they have pirated movies, OS and other software, hardware and what not to meet their financial capabilities.
And don't even dream about MS and others being against this. They support it and its a fact! They KNOW that these people will NOT be able to buy their product legally so they provide them with the pirated version just to get them hooked. Think about MS for example. If they actually manage to destroy the pirated copies of Winblows what would all those people who cannot afford it do??? You guessed it, they would use Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu or any other ...buntu there is for free and so, if their country EVER develops enough they will never again switch back to paying for something they get for free and they got used to. Same deal everywhere else, just have to look harder to come up with an example...
DarkAardvark @ Oct 11th 2007 6:41AM
@pedja
actually, the real copies of Vista are about $5 ~ $10 dollars. they try to make them very low so people will actually buy them and not pirate them.
PB @ Oct 11th 2007 5:07AM

ogami_ito @ Oct 11th 2007 5:39AM
1. Does this thing actually play Wii games?
2. you people who get all upset about copying... your idiots. I'm not even going to get into how stupid this attitude is. Look at it from any perspective; economics, culture, art, politics, military strategy, education, etc. Copying is often good and brings improvement to the original work.
3. Copying and reverse engineering should not be confused with lacking inginuity. The Chinese companies are copying / reverse engineering because they lack financial resources, or they lack marketing skill, or both. But they are very innovative. You have any idea how difficult...how much inginuity goes into QUICKLY making knock-offs of phones and games?
4. This all being said... Chinese companies (not individuals) tend to lack originality and marketing sense IMHO.
suv4x4 @ Oct 11th 2007 6:33AM
All in all, it's not nice to call those knock-offs lame, but this IS lame.
Getting inspiration from other products is just fine, but selling Vii and iPohne, trying to fool people is just stupid, even if those people don't have the money for the real deal.
I'd have much more respect for those Chinese manufacturers, if they would just think of a unique name for their products, and stick to it.
Then they can build a brand and soon be as popular as the devices they try to copy. Because, *YES* they do have the expertise and ability to produce good devices quick.
But what they do is sad, and there's no reason to do it, except they know no better.
Toru @ Oct 11th 2007 7:01AM
"you people who get all upset about copying... your idiots."
- Let's talk, shall we?
"Copying is often good and brings improvement to the original work."
- I will not argue that it is one possible outcome. Through the deconstruction of a product, and subsequent analysis of its structure, function and operation, one can learn from others work and build upon it. This leaves the possibility of further development of the product, however, you are taking the research and development of another as your own. In most cases, these companies simply stuffing a cloned body of a competitor with lower cost parts to undercut their prices, then adding a poorly developed OS/UI layer on top.
"Copying and reverse engineering should not be confused with lacking ingenuity."
- That depends on your definition of ingenuity, of course. The "paint by numbers" approach of many chinese replicas would hardly be considered ingenious, novel, inventive, imaginative, or (to a lesser extent) clever.
"The Chinese companies are copying / reverse engineering because they lack financial resources, or they lack marketing skill, or both."
- You lump so much into the lack of financial resources category. They lack proper research and development teams, design skills, UI programming skills, proper testing and quality control (in some cases), branding (ok, that's marketing), etc.
"But they are very innovative. You have any idea how difficult...how much ingenuity goes into QUICKLY making knock-offs of phones and games?"
- Again, I believe you're mixing your definitions and giving credit where little is due. Many of these companies are not innovative; there work is neither the production of something like nothing done, experienced or created before nor is it a substantial change to an established line.
This all being said... Chinese companies (not individuals) tend to lack originality and marketing sense IMHO.
- That is a generalization. There are many companies in China who specialize in knocking off competitors products, but that is a reality of life in China. What I was referring to in my response was specifically those companies. There are many more products in china which are substantially original, though few which would cause want to outsource product design anytime to China soon, heh.

we shouldnt be judging the chinese by the 'knock-off' products profit-orientated companies are producing. theres the really good, high quality original products, and then the really low quality, knock off products in china, theres a large gap between high and low. it all depends on what price you're willing to pay and how much $ you've got in our wallet. who says you cant buy an original wii in china?.
suv4x4 @ Oct 11th 2007 6:39AM

I don't think when someone says "Chinese cheap knockoffs" they speak for China as a whole. Yea, we do realise something like 80% of the world electronics are made there, including the popular (the real ones) brand.
I have a Lenovo laptop.
I'm not sure how this excuses some wanna-be companies from producing this stuff. And it's pure waste, since if they can produce cheap knockoffs, then they have the knowledge and technology and experience to make their own products. They just don't do it for "just so" reasons. The clone concept is stuck into their mentality.
DarkAardvark @ Oct 11th 2007 6:43AM
lol the LG Chocolate. a knock off company made an LG Chocolate available in chna before the real Chocolate was introduced. when the real one arrived, everyone thought it was a fake LOL
KJJ @ Oct 11th 2007 11:35PM
"I don't think when someone says "Chinese cheap knockoffs" they speak for China as a whole."
I wasn't saying they did. I never spoke about china as a whole whilst talking about 'chinese cheap knockoffs' in my comment, and even if I did, i had no intentions of doing so at the time of writing, so i'll excuse myself now if anyone took my comment the wrong way.
"we shouldnt be judging the chinese by the 'knock-off' products profit-orientated companies are producing"
I even stated that we shouldnt be talking about china as a 'whole' just because of the knock off products profit-orientated **companies** are producing (the very opinion you're pressing against me).
cheers.
So i hope you didnt think i was referring to somebody in particular. thanks.

ogami_ito /KJJ /Toru /Pedja:
i pay respect to you guys having a neutral stance and a profound analysis and well consider and thought about what is going on with the tv game itself, marketing w/ non wii target audience and china developing situation when judging and commenting the captioned case.
firstly, let me reply ogami_ito (i bet you are japanese, right?)about your question on '1. Does this thing actually play Wii games?'
ans: no, we can't play wii games.
i truly repect u as japanese and think this way. this is why japanese can create great stuff...it is about attitude. my salute to u.
To Toru, i like your saying: "Copying is often good and brings improvement to the original work." absolutely agreed with what you said, in history, take a look at coke and pepsi, no competition no gain and they won't be this BIG after hundred year competition...
Scroll back 50+ years...
The name "Nikon" was believed to be "Nippon Ikon", copied from Zeiss Ikon of Germany, maker of the original Contax rangefinder cameras (i.e. not SLR). Nikon copied the Contax lens mount, too, but they were not 100% compatible.
Ironic thing is that you will find some Nikon rangefinders command higher prices than Contax rangefinders on the market.
The name "Canon" came from "Kwanon", a buddhist deity. (Kwun Yum brand camera!!??)
Last but not the least to toru, hope to see wii with more innovative stuff coming up next while we planned to launch viifitness in Nov or Dec 2007.
Pedja, you must be a damned good marketer. agreed with your saying. hope to get more in touch with this type of intelligent people.
KJJ, bingo. correct. market demand is definitely here in china. the consumption per capita is relatively low here. moreover, the POPULATION is HUGE, bare in mind. In mainland china, we don't call china is a country, but there are many countries in china...meaning that land is vast w/ huge population and many different dialects though they understand and speak mandarin, the common and official language in china.
