Gigabyte reveals M704 UMPC
Call us crazy, but Gigabyte's new M704 looks awfully familiar to the U60, but we'll give the nod to this bugger in the style department. Freshened up with a sleeker, sexier motif, the firm's latest UMPC packs a 1.2GHz VIA Esther ULV C7 processor, a VX-700 chipset, seven-inch 1,024 x 600 LED-backlit touchscreen, your choice of 40GB / 60GB hard drives, a multicard reader, twin USB 2.0 ports and a VGA output. On top of all that, you'll also find 802.11b/g WiFi, a Li-ion battery good for around three hours, a slide out QWERTY keyboard and a 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera. As expected, Gigabyte hasn't bothered to tell us when or where we'll find this machine on sale, and yeah, the price is still a mystery, too.

isn't 1024x600 WSVGA, not WXGA? (as it has the same vertical resolution as SVGA 800x600)
Chris Habig @ Nov 19th 2007 9:41AM
Who really cares. All those letters are meaningless to me anyway. Just tell me the pixel dimensions--now that means something!
Michael Geary @ Nov 19th 2007 9:53PM
You mean you don't like SUXWGA++- displays?

throw in a GPS and/or sell it under $400 and it'll make me forget about the n810.. right now it's making the i-pod touch look like a shuffle..
kyle @ Nov 19th 2007 5:17AM
@logyk - there is no way that is going for anywhere close to $400. look for it to be at least $1000
Yem @ Nov 19th 2007 5:54AM
Hmm - it's not $600 better than an ASUS EEE though. Apart from the hard drive, what's so great?
kyle @ Nov 19th 2007 6:43AM
slightly better processing power in a smaller, sexier form factor with a much higher resolution screen with LED backlighting.

a guy can dream cant he.. if it did have a GPS and Blue tooth (it probably does have BT) i'd be willing to part with a Grand for it, oh wait i'm married, never mind.
i misread the article before and thought it was a PMP, just noticed the windows key on it and re-read.. way sweeter then EEPC for sure, and about $300 sweeter then the n810

looks nice, but the features are run of the mill.

Why can't these have DVI out? Analog is so passe.

Very sexy... and very unaffordable.

Here we go, this "seven-inch 1,024 x 600 LED-backlit touchscreen" would fit perfectly in the Asus Eee PC! Anybody know if panels are easily swapped? DIYers out there?
AudioScience @ Nov 29th 2007 4:47AM
Well, the panel would probably physically fit, but doesn't the eeePC use an 800x480 resolution? I wonder if the eeePC's graphics controller can run alternative resolutions, and how it physically interfaces with the panel. Either way, I guess buying a $1000 device to use its' parts to upgrade a $400 device would be something I wouldn't be able to do unless I was rich :P
