Worldwide LCD TV shipments surpass CRTs for first time ever
Just days after Sony vaulted to the top of North American LCD sales charts, DisplaySearch is now reporting that worldwide shipments of LCD TVs have overtaken CRT TVs for the first time in the history of the universe. More specifically, LCD TV sales rose some 56-percent year over year, and 47-percent of the world's TV market is now held by said technology. Reportedly, the transition from CRT to LCD was seen as a logical one, considering that it could extend down to sizes smaller than 20-inches and satisfy desires for large-screen sets. We know you're just itching to go diving head first into more numbers on the subject, so feel free to toss on those wire-rimmed glasses and hit the read link below.

So, the takeover begins.
Actually, it began a fair amount of time ago when stores started pushing LCDs hardcore.
mikelong @ Feb 19th 2008 8:26PM
So is Plasma the other 10%?
frank @ Feb 19th 2008 8:27PM
I find it suprising it has taken this long. My local discount electrical retailer only sells 2 or 3 CRTs compared to hundreds of LCD and plasma.
Josh L @ Feb 19th 2008 10:34PM
You're forgetting that consumer retail sales are only a part of the total. Businesses are the other (much larger) part, and they have always been notoriously averse to changing technology.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 19th 2008 8:27PM
I like LCDs alot but they are fragile. Mine had it's button broke only after a month and now I have to use my old dell CRT
T-Bone @ Feb 19th 2008 8:57PM
The button is not a product of LCD technology. Buttons on CRTs are just as susceptible.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 19th 2008 10:12PM
just trying to say LCD's are fragile overall
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 19th 2008 10:13PM
and no, CRT buttons are bigger than MY LCD's buttons and made of cheap plastic. Dell really hates me.
Daza @ Feb 19th 2008 10:44PM
No CUBSWILLWIN, you really have it all wrong. Comparing the chassis or buttons on your LCD to your CRT and then saying that LCDs are more fragile over all, is just silly.
fusion @ Feb 19th 2008 8:27PM
SO WHICH COUNTRYS IS CRT STILL BIG IN
phanbouy @ Feb 19th 2008 8:28PM
the republic of caps lock
John @ Feb 19th 2008 8:31PM
no, only in the People's Republic of Capslock.
Johan S @ Feb 19th 2008 8:50PM
Developing countries like India.
CRT is still popular in those countries because they can only afford smaller TV's (13 inch, 19 inch, etc.) which are cheaper than LCD.
andres @ Feb 19th 2008 10:34PM
everyone knows aliens are past crt's and lcd's. they use BLT's
andres @ Feb 19th 2008 10:36PM
oops, wrong reply
andres @ Feb 19th 2008 10:36PM
oops, wrong reply
AJ in the East Bay @ Feb 19th 2008 8:27PM
Time to go and review the CRT deathwatch template?
eeeMan @ Feb 19th 2008 8:29PM
First time in the history of the universe??? Anyone believe in aliens? I do
Alijah @ Feb 19th 2008 8:36PM
Yes and I'm sure stealing the glory of the Aliens' advanced technology will piss them off to the point of a hostile takeover of our beloved planet Earth.
Alan Partridge @ Feb 19th 2008 8:36PM
Aliens use CRT. Nicer colours.
Alijah @ Feb 19th 2008 8:44PM
I'm sure they have something far more advanced than LCDs and CRTs :P
wrabbit @ Feb 19th 2008 8:56PM
Well of course they do, they beam images directly into their brain. Didn't they tell you this when they were probing you?
No?
Just me then...
Abuzar @ Feb 19th 2008 9:03PM
Nah, those Aliens are still stuck in the Bronze Age.
Why do stories Focus on Aliens being Superior? For all we know they could be the equivalent of cavemen.
andres @ Feb 19th 2008 10:37PM
aliens are past crt's and lcd's, they use blt's
Jack @ Feb 20th 2008 7:22AM
I wouldn't have thought a sandwich would have made a good display but there you go... if aliens use them they must be good
Chebwa @ Feb 19th 2008 9:04PM
I wish there were 32" sized LCD televisions with 4:3 ratios so I could jam my PS2/SNES/PSX/N64 on 'em. No black bars, no stretch, just classic gaming on a flat telvision.
Oh well.
DP @ Feb 19th 2008 9:07PM
Preach.
The Blotch @ Feb 20th 2008 12:22AM
Well, you just wasted an hour of my life, but...

OWNED!!!
Chebwa @ Feb 20th 2008 12:30AM
"Maximum Resolution: 1366 x 768"
But it's 4:3? And no reviews anywhere... I am interested but I'm not sure if it's even really 4:3. What is with this thing!? Shady as hell but if it's for real, I want it.
speedyrulz8 @ Feb 20th 2008 10:28AM
That TV is clearly 16:9 looking at the picture.
dcny @ Feb 19th 2008 9:16PM
Well they wont be getting to 80% anytime soon, how about stop working on extra stuff plasma tv's etc. and just try to make the current LCD's cheaper
they wont be getting any higher or wont be getting above 55 % without a price drop they got the geeks & tech nerds covered now for the common people which wont pay that much for the tv's; whens the $100 19inch LCD's gonna start rolling out ?
Brian @ Feb 19th 2008 9:43PM
Oh man, preach it. I was just thinking about that kinda thing earlier today when I was playing Tomb Raider on PS3.
Brian @ Feb 19th 2008 9:45PM
damn. meant to point that at chebwa. firefox died midpost, and when I re-opened, I didn't realize it had undid the reply.
Alijah @ Feb 19th 2008 10:59PM
Firefox died?
no wae
Brian @ Feb 19th 2008 11:46PM
eh, I think it's more just my 512MB RAM on my MacBook. things go to a crawl, and then it just stops. and usually if I wait a minute it'll kick back up. but, sometimes it won't. so I force quit.
still will never switch from firefox.
thethirdmoose @ Feb 19th 2008 11:14PM
Does anyone else agree that 4:3 monitors are better than widescreen for doing actual work?
nikster @ Feb 20th 2008 6:22PM
I don't think so. As screens grow, it just makes more sense to grow left and right vs. in all directions. Wide screen is much better for larger screens as it fits our field of vision which is wide and comparatively not very high.
That's why cinema is wide screen and not 4:3 or square.
Jonn @ Feb 19th 2008 11:37PM
I think CRTs have better gamma than LCDs too.
I had a 24" 1920x1200 LCD PC/multifunction monitor for a few days last fall: The widescreen was impressive, but the shadows went too black too fast (not gradual) and lost detail. The regular 4:3 TV picture on the 24" widescreen didn't use the full width--it was about the same size as on my bargain 19" 4:3 LCD PC monitor, which it might have replaced. The extra space was nice, but I have two Sony 17" Trinitron CRTs matching the LCD's max resolution of 1280x1024. (The CRT's can go higher too.) I couldn't justify the cost and returned it.
I hope SED display/TV technology works out.

fusion @ Feb 19th 2008 11:45PM
I DO 4.3 SCREENS EASIER TO WORK WITH THAN WIDE ONES
vincewilcox @ Feb 19th 2008 11:51PM
How do we know that CRT sales aren't big in outer space? Or that LCD TV's haven't been popular before we even existed. I think to assume that that it is the first time in the universe is a bit much. But then again, our American athletes are World Champions.
Tom Oliveri @ Feb 20th 2008 12:30AM
wow, do i feel naive..
Gandalf @ Feb 20th 2008 2:56AM

Gandalf @ Feb 20th 2008 2:59AM
