We know you need it. Now you've got it. ASUS' 7- and 9-inch Eee PCs lined up for a side by side comparison. The new 9-incher is clearly the bigger brother to the shorter original. Too bad too 'cause that chunky bezel on the 7-inch already offers plenty of room for screen-estate growth. You can also clearly see the bigger touchpad and beefier display hinge of the new 9-inch. Check the gallery to see all the hot 9- on 7-inch action.
Can't turn it on. ASUS wants to "surprise" everyone tomorrow when they announce a deal with Microsoft to optionally pre-load the new 9-inch with XP. Funny, 'cause they have banners around the booth clearly showing XP on the Eee. Sometimes we just have to play along.
The European price includes the VAT. In the USA the sales tax is added on after the sale. That accounts for some of the difference in list prices that you see.
Speakers could be anywhere (under the keyboard?). Speakers aren't too important, anyway I'd be quite happy to use phones for the rare times I watch video.
I think it looks pretty good. Resolution is important, though.
I would love to see how you turn it into a touchscreen remote, I have tinkered with that idea but the only way I see it working is using a remote desktop of some sort which in my experiance doesn't work to will with media center apps. let me know the progress teetdogs at gmail dot com
It would have been nice to provide a three-button touchpad too, as long as they were replacing it. Even my 7year old Toshiba has a three-button touchpad. These are Linux devices, right?
399 Euro is one hell of a deal, heck I paid 300 Euro for an iPod Photo 30GB 4 years ago. 8GB is pretty decent as well. But I have to join the club of the whiners and ask about the resolution!!
Hopefully you guys will catch HP with their new portable baby there as well. In the near 6-8 months I might pick up either of them. Still waiting for HP to announce the price though.
I thought exactly the same. Optical illusion, 2" isn't visibly different, or the specs aren't entirely accurate? The 7" is a much better-looking machine anyway.
Dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, da da da da duh da da da da da dada, da da da da duh da da da da da dada... FIGHT! duhda duh duh da di da da duh dada... you get the idea... FINISH HIM!!!!!
short of buying one, does anybody know where (in the US) you can see one in person--as in particular retail chains or sales outlets? it seems like lots of people have doubts about the size of the keyboard.
My local BJ's wholesale club has the (7 inch of course) 2G surf model on display, it wasn't powered on, but they did have it mounted in a laptop-clamp so you could fondle its buttons and whatnot. I want one more than ever, but now I'm torn on whether to wait for the whole 9 inches or not.
If its 399 euros then its going to be around 449 usd. Although the exchange rate is 1 euro = 1.5 USD. Laptops seems to be a lot more expensive in Europe.
I really wish they'd make use of the entire real estate area on the screen.. thats the main drawback for me. They could have easily squeezed 9 inches of viewable screen space into the 7-inch body. That would be a more worth while mod.
Mathematically, 1024 x 600 would make sense. To keep the proportion of pixels to inches the same as that of the 7", the resolution would be about 1029 x 610. This obviouslt isn't a common resolution, but 1024 x 600 is very plausible.
Don't forget that the extra 2 inches is in the diagonal, not the length or the width, that's why it may be not so obvious. 1024x600 would be really nice! The major problem with the current Eee is quite a number of programs (like Evolution and many games) cannot run with less than 600 pixels high.
Here it comes... the prices will increase and there goes asus's nitch market for inexpensive pc's. Unless they drop there price on the 7" eeepc, they will never sell the 9" as well as the 7" ones.
I just got my 7" from costco.com on Friday. Good thing they have a 90 day no questions asked return policy! I'll return it in May and get the 9". Woo-hoo!
i think the surprise is 3g cuz they got a piece of paper covering something up under communications...or am i just being a noob...(insert 9 inch penis joke here)
Bluetooth and an 8.9" WSVGA screen would make me buy it yesterday, let's see if the processor is the same as the original Eee. I hope this lights a fire under HP's ass so they announce the 2133 soon.
processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution processor and resolution the other stuff were basiclly known but if the processor and resolution are nice .................
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
2 things:
- Resolution?!
- Where are the speakers now?
If it's bigger then 800x480 i'm putting in an order yesterday.
why do yu need a speak? i would just use the haedphone.
anyways, something to point out, it is still using a fan. oh how i hate the fan in laptop.
If I have Match of the Day (UK football programme) on while I'm doing something else not conducive to being attached to something with a cable.
girls are all about that 9"
+1 to dave for making a Sex joke.
ARGH The least you could do is turn both screens on then we could get an idea of the resolution on the 9" version!!!
Thomas
Thanks Thomas.
Preloaded XP would be more useful for me, now that I think about it.
are the pictures with xp on the 8.9 inch? resolution can be guessed based on that.
'Can't turn it on. ASUS wants to "surprise" everyone tomorrow when they announce a deal with Microsoft to optionally pre-load the new 9-inch with XP.'
Didn't you just give the surprise away?
Theres a surprise? .!..
Theres a surprise? .!..
Which is why the "surprise" has quotation marks.
And awww the eee is all grown up and almost looks like a real laptop
Fact is, the surprise wasn't a "surprise" before giving it away. And once you give it away, why don't do it all the way?
I don't remember where I've read it before but I believe its a 1024x600 screen.
Comparing resolutions on qvga resolution picture. Nice work Enstein
Oh, looks like it is an inkling larger. Woops.
But it's still awesomely tasty.
Thats what she said
DO WANT. How much?
Exchange rate says $600 for you over the pond, but I thinks Asus wouldn't charge $200 more for what it is.
ijyt: But Asus is willing to charge Europeans 150€ ($1 = 1.5€) more and that's fair? USA citizens, you should start accepting exchange rates...
$1 = 1.5€?
I'm taking a vacation in Europe right away!!
I think you got your exchange rate wrong, here it is from xe.com
1 USD = 0.658085 EUR 1 EUR = 1.51956 USD
The European price includes the VAT. In the USA the sales tax is added on after the sale. That accounts for some of the difference in list prices that you see.
For $600 you can get a fully equipped Dell 14" on deal that would make this thing look largely unusable.
Because a 14" dell is ultraportable? Think before you type
I found what I'm spending my tax return on
Speakers could be anywhere (under the keyboard?). Speakers aren't too important, anyway I'd be quite happy to use phones for the rare times I watch video.
I think it looks pretty good. Resolution is important, though.
VGA port is still completely useless if you have to use a security cable. Still a deal breaker.
why? do you bring a CRT to the library? not lock your front door? really distrust your roommate?
Penis joke.
I gave my girlfriend the seven-incher, but I could tell she was looking for nine. Hee Hee. Haw Haw.
That's why I'll be stopping by while you're at work.
I just bought my 2nd Eee this last weekend. I guess I'll be buying a 3rd when this one comes out!
You could like, make a portable command center.
I plan on turning one of them into a touchscreen remote for my HTPC
I would love to see how you turn it into a touchscreen remote, I have tinkered with that idea but the only way I see it working is using a remote desktop of some sort which in my experiance doesn't work to will with media center apps. let me know the progress teetdogs at gmail dot com
Any idea when they're shipping?
sometime this summer, if all goes according to plan
my guess is late july/august, in time for back to school
Eee. Too late for me.
Why don't you comment, like, one more time on this thread. Seriously man, combine your many wise insights and queries. I'd much appreciate it.
Well excuse me for talking. I'll just go tape my mouth shut and my arms together, and stuff myself into a closet.
thats not the only thing that is 9 inches
Oh come on.
Oh really? Since your name is Mona I guess it's your golden double headed dildo you're talking about.
Previous reports peg the screen resolution at 1024x600.
If you're lying....
... you will...
...kill someone.
^H's first born...
larger mouse pad... nice, thought they would keep the same form factor though, strange.

I want more info on the U2E.
:c
My overstimulated brain salutes you, Engadget. It was a surprisingly hot twist seeing the 7" take the bottom.
EEE 9", you've been Rule 34'd!
Is it just me, or is it difficult to tell which is which in the photo?
The actual screen areas look to be the same size.
the 9 inch looks larger (clearly no homo)
I thought exactly the same. Optical illusion, 2" isn't visibly different, or the specs aren't entirely accurate? The 7" is a much better-looking machine anyway.
The 7 inch has a border around the screen where the speakers are, but it looks like the 9 inch does not. That's why the screens look the same size.
I think you're mistaking the massive black plastic bezel on the 7" as part of the screen.
Now... if they'd only made this before I got a macbook...
I needed something to do a year's worth or work at uni on, though.
Dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, dada dada dada dada, da da da da duh da da da da da dada, da da da da duh da da da da da dada... FIGHT! duhda duh duh da di da da duh dada... you get the idea... FINISH HIM!!!!!
None of this matters if it isn't priced right.
short of buying one, does anybody know where (in the US) you can see one in person--as in particular retail chains or sales outlets? it seems like lots of people have doubts about the size of the keyboard.

BALLIN' er...*cough*...sorry
Eee PC is getting nicer and nicer.
If the 9inch has indeed 1024x600 resolution I will start wanting one.
According to daily tech the resolution is 1024x600.
http://www.dailytech.com/ASUS+Shows+Off+89+Eee+PC+900/article10938.htm
DUAL CORE NEXT!!!
Yeah, a dual-core Atom CPU would be nice, although I dunno how the in-order nature of those CPUs will affect performance.
If it was $399 I would go OH BABY!
The larger trackpad would seem to indicate increased resolution--unless the original trackpad is too small for 800x460 or whatever it is.
If it had a bigger HDD then I would definitely buy it. But 12GB is too small
It doesn't have a HDD, that's kinda the point. 12gb of solid state memory ain't bad.
If its 399 euros then its going to be around 449 usd. Although the exchange rate is 1 euro = 1.5 USD. Laptops seems to be a lot more expensive in Europe.
The 7 inch 299USD version cost 299 Euro!
I'd imagine the 9" is the same as the 7", except that it's a little more satisfying and impressive.
So close...
I was so hoping they'd announce a swiveling screen to make it a covertible tablet. That would make it the ultimate portable device.
Oh well, maybe I'll just do the touchscreen mod to the 7"... decisions decisions.
I have a client needing to buy in quantity and do not know how to reach you !!! PLEASE CONTACT ME RIGHT AWAY. THANKS
I really wish they'd make use of the entire real estate area on the screen.. thats the main drawback for me. They could have easily squeezed 9 inches of viewable screen space into the 7-inch body. That would be a more worth while mod.
I might get myself one of these.
Now my question is, where are the speakers? Not on the bottom I hope.
Mathematically, 1024 x 600 would make sense. To keep the proportion of pixels to inches the same as that of the 7", the resolution would be about 1029 x 610. This obviouslt isn't a common resolution, but 1024 x 600 is very plausible.
More likely 1024x640, as that is keeping with a 16:10 widescreen display.
Don't forget that the extra 2 inches is in the diagonal, not the length or the width, that's why it may be not so obvious.
1024x600 would be really nice! The major problem with the current Eee is quite a number of programs (like Evolution and many games) cannot run with less than 600 pixels high.
That last sentence sounds sooo wrong....
You brought it up. However, it kind of funny ...
Why Pink?
Here it comes... the prices will increase and there goes asus's nitch market for inexpensive pc's. Unless they drop there price on the 7" eeepc, they will never sell the 9" as well as the 7" ones.
And that was what ASUS was thinking all along.
Hopefully this has not been mentioned, check out this picture:
http://scr3.golem.de/?d=0803/Eee-PC-Zubehoer&a=58127&s=3
There is a masked item under "conectivity". Guess what this will be ;-)
Something that is no longer present?
Hello,
Available in June as unbuntu?
When you cross the asus not pass it to unbuntu directly?
What do you think?
I just got my 7" from costco.com on Friday. Good thing they have a 90 day no questions asked return policy! I'll return it in May and get the 9". Woo-hoo!
http://scr3.golem.de/screenshots/0803/Eee-PC-Zubehoer/DSCF0706.JPG
Looks like its a higher resolution. Its the only picture with the unit turned on I've gathered. So ponder away .. :-)
i think the surprise is 3g cuz they got a piece of paper covering something up under communications...or am i just being a noob...(insert 9 inch penis joke here)
I reckon bluetooth built in is more likely.
The Euro price includes the 18% VAT. The US price is exclusive of sales tax.
I see the 9" screen being transplanted into the 7" EEE - can I get an amen?
