7-inch Eee PC vs 9-inch Eee PC -- ready, fight!

2 things:
- Resolution?!
- Where are the speakers now?
If it's bigger then 800x480 i'm putting in an order yesterday.
why do yu need a speak? i would just use the haedphone.
anyways, something to point out, it is still using a fan. oh how i hate the fan in laptop.
If I have Match of the Day (UK football programme) on while I'm doing something else not conducive to being attached to something with a cable.

Can't turn it on. ASUS wants to "surprise" everyone tomorrow when they announce a deal with Microsoft to optionally pre-load the new 9-inch with XP. Funny, 'cause they have banners around the booth clearly showing XP on the Eee. Sometimes we just have to play along.

Preloaded XP would be more useful for me, now that I think about it.
are the pictures with xp on the 8.9 inch? resolution can be guessed based on that.

I don't remember where I've read it before but I believe its a 1024x600 screen.

I think you got your exchange rate wrong, here it is from xe.com
1 USD = 0.658085 EUR 1 EUR = 1.51956 USD
The European price includes the VAT. In the USA the sales tax is added on after the sale. That accounts for some of the difference in list prices that you see.
For $600 you can get a fully equipped Dell 14" on deal that would make this thing look largely unusable.

Speakers could be anywhere (under the keyboard?). Speakers aren't too important, anyway I'd be quite happy to use phones for the rare times I watch video.
I think it looks pretty good. Resolution is important, though.
VGA port is still completely useless if you have to use a security cable. Still a deal breaker.

I plan on turning one of them into a touchscreen remote for my HTPC
I would love to see how you turn it into a touchscreen remote, I have tinkered with that idea but the only way I see it working is using a remote desktop of some sort which in my experiance doesn't work to will with media center apps. let me know the progress teetdogs at gmail dot com

larger mouse pad... nice, thought they would keep the same form factor though, strange.
It would have been nice to provide a three-button touchpad too, as long as they were replacing it. Even my 7year old Toshiba has a three-button touchpad. These are Linux devices, right?
399 Euro is one hell of a deal, heck I paid 300 Euro for an iPod Photo 30GB 4 years ago. 8GB is pretty decent as well. But I have to join the club of the whiners and ask about the resolution!!
Hopefully you guys will catch HP with their new portable baby there as well. In the near 6-8 months I might pick up either of them. Still waiting for HP to announce the price though.

Is it just me, or is it difficult to tell which is which in the photo?
The actual screen areas look to be the same size.

I thought exactly the same. Optical illusion, 2" isn't visibly different, or the specs aren't entirely accurate? The 7" is a much better-looking machine anyway.
The 7 inch has a border around the screen where the speakers are, but it looks like the 9 inch does not. That's why the screens look the same size.
I think you're mistaking the massive black plastic bezel on the 7" as part of the screen.
Now... if they'd only made this before I got a macbook...

short of buying one, does anybody know where (in the US) you can see one in person--as in particular retail chains or sales outlets? it seems like lots of people have doubts about the size of the keyboard.
My local BJ's wholesale club has the (7 inch of course) 2G surf model on display, it wasn't powered on, but they did have it mounted in a laptop-clamp so you could fondle its buttons and whatnot. I want one more than ever, but now I'm torn on whether to wait for the whole 9 inches or not.

Yeah, a dual-core Atom CPU would be nice, although I dunno how the in-order nature of those CPUs will affect performance.

The larger trackpad would seem to indicate increased resolution--unless the original trackpad is too small for 800x460 or whatever it is.
If it had a bigger HDD then I would definitely buy it. But 12GB is too small
It doesn't have a HDD, that's kinda the point. 12gb of solid state memory ain't bad.
If its 399 euros then its going to be around 449 usd. Although the exchange rate is 1 euro = 1.5 USD. Laptops seems to be a lot more expensive in Europe.
The 7 inch 299USD version cost 299 Euro!
I'd imagine the 9" is the same as the 7", except that it's a little more satisfying and impressive.

I was so hoping they'd announce a swiveling screen to make it a covertible tablet. That would make it the ultimate portable device.

I really wish they'd make use of the entire real estate area on the screen.. thats the main drawback for me. They could have easily squeezed 9 inches of viewable screen space into the 7-inch body. That would be a more worth while mod.

Mathematically, 1024 x 600 would make sense. To keep the proportion of pixels to inches the same as that of the 7", the resolution would be about 1029 x 610. This obviouslt isn't a common resolution, but 1024 x 600 is very plausible.
More likely 1024x640, as that is keeping with a 16:10 widescreen display.
Don't forget that the extra 2 inches is in the diagonal, not the length or the width, that's why it may be not so obvious.
1024x600 would be really nice! The major problem with the current Eee is quite a number of programs (like Evolution and many games) cannot run with less than 600 pixels high.

Here it comes... the prices will increase and there goes asus's nitch market for inexpensive pc's. Unless they drop there price on the 7" eeepc, they will never sell the 9" as well as the 7" ones.
And that was what ASUS was thinking all along.

Looks like its a higher resolution. Its the only picture with the unit turned on I've gathered. So ponder away .. :-)

The Euro price includes the 18% VAT. The US price is exclusive of sales tax.
Bluetooth and an 8.9" WSVGA screen would make me buy it yesterday, let's see if the processor is the same as the original Eee. I hope this lights a fire under HP's ass so they announce the 2133 soon.
