AMD roadmap shocker reveals new Turion, Athlon, Sempron mobile CPUs
It looks like those worried that AMD didn't have any new processors in the pipeline can rest easy, as an apparently official roadmap turned up by ComputerBase recently revealed that the company is, in fact, doing its job and churning out CPUs at a steady pace. This latest batch consists of four Griffin-based chips, which are spread across the company's Turion 64 Ultra, Turion 64, Athlon 64, and Sempron mobile processor lines. On the Turion front, the processors are each said to boast DDR2 800MHz memory, along with clock speeds ranging from 2.0GHz to 2.4GHz, and power consumption between 32 and 35 Watts. The lone Athlon 64 chip, on the other hand, clocks in at 1.9GHz, with 1MB of L2 cache, DDR2 667MHz support, and a power consumption of 31W, while the Sempron rounds things out with a power consumption of 25W, 512KB of L2 cache, and a clock speed "starting from" 2.0GHz. No word on prices for the processors themselves just yet, but as Laptoping points out, AMD has announced that Puma / Griffin-powered laptops would begin shipping sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Seeing as how nVidia's product line nomenclature has nibbled up on ATI's Radeon product line, it's only fitting that AMD should do the same with Intel's line. But they ought to focus on even more recent products to really confuse the poor customer.
I can't be the only one who thinks AMD should totally throw in some Q6600s and E8400s for good measure? Right, guys? Right?!?
Oh missed opportunities! :[

They better do something fast, they lost $1.77 billion in 2007's fourth quarter...
sr @ Mar 11th 2008 5:00PM
It's sad to say as a former Athlon 64 user and overclocker that it isn't even worth reading AMD processor announcements anymore. I hope that changes one day.
Ayman @ Mar 11th 2008 5:06PM
wasnt there a time when the AMD was considered as the gaming chip... what happened?
CUBSWILLWIN @ Mar 11th 2008 5:08PM
AMD is now the old geezer of the 1970's, who talk's about it's great days when it played pong.
They pretty much died in the gaming biz in another sense
ethana2 @ Mar 11th 2008 6:38PM
Intel responded to the competition and AMD got lazy over the same year.
Netburst got the axe and PIII turned into Core and Core 2.
...then intel devised their 'tick-tock' strategy. It seems to be working.
bob sakamano @ Mar 11th 2008 5:07PM
is there a site that (hopefully unbiased) compares AMD to intel?
i just know what intel processors are good and am WAAAAY out of the loop of anything AMD.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Mar 11th 2008 5:09PM
I used to have an intel athlon, and an intel core2 both, and the AMD was crap while the intel was more efficient. Intel really kicks ass to AMD
CL @ Mar 11th 2008 5:12PM
"I used to have an intel athlon"
You may want to hold on to that intel athlon, it's going to worth billions! :-p
Blacksheep @ Mar 11th 2008 5:33PM
Ahhh yes, the Intel Athlon, that was the greatest processor of all time.
I can see we have a real computer building wizard on our hands here.
bob sakamano @ Mar 11th 2008 5:36PM
well whats the "intel core2 both"
sounds better than the intel athlon
CL @ Mar 11th 2008 5:48PM
Just imagine the 2 join together, you will have the world's most confusing naming scheme ever.
"No...the 64-X2-E6600+ is slower than the FX-72-QX9650Extreme"

i always base my purchases on this website. i must say that it is a good comparison that shows how good the CPU's are under different benchmarks . it also gives you a choice to pick value over power chart, that shows you the most power u can get for your money. And in most cases it is indeed and AMD. At the moment if u are in the market for a CPU i would buy intel's E8400. which is 260$ and is in the top 4 of most charts.

hope i was of some help

I see you are still around, where have you been for the last few posts? Man....we missed you.
MorikaWeb @ Mar 11th 2008 5:44PM
I'll never understand how people get off saying AMD is dead in gaming. Fact is I have a all AMD (ala ATI) system and have yet to find a game I cannot run. So if my all AMD system can run anything currently on the market, and cost a ton cheaper than an Intel system, how is AMD dead in gaming?
Dubb @ Mar 11th 2008 6:03PM
It's not dead in gaming, unless you really need those extra few hundred points in 3D Mark.
Abuzar @ Mar 11th 2008 10:37PM
When is it cheaper? Get me a GOOD quality board and a AMD CPU and I will find you the same for an intel cpu that will perform better for the same price.
iofthestorm @ Mar 11th 2008 11:31PM
@Abuzar: That's not necessarily true, AMD motherboards have been cheaper in general for some time, whereas many Intel motherboards are rather overpriced. So even if you get a processor that costs the same, the motherboard might cost significantly more for an Intel platform. Also, I agree with MorikaWeb, I have a fully AMD system as well and it was much cheaper than an equivalent Intel system and it runs anything out there right now.
Abuzar @ Mar 12th 2008 12:54AM
Ga-P35-DS3l= 90
E2180= 70
Overclock to 3ghz= Free
No comparably priced AMD rig is beating that. I'm not saying AMD is bad, it's just bad value for your money if you're building a new computer.
Chip @ Mar 11th 2008 6:16PM
Shouldn't you register more appropriate names, like Third Guy or XNumber Guy. Better yet, since you're completely irrelevant, annoying and OT, just go away.
Sorry for taking the post bait, but just had to get it off my chest. ahhhh feel better now.
TMM @ Mar 11th 2008 6:43PM
Oh, man ... AMD is really in bad shape.
Long past are the days when they gave Intel a run for the money.
But, you can clearly see how competition is good for the business, and for the customers:
We now really have some great cpus - from Intel this time.
I love the Core2Duo, etc., and what's in the pipe ...
MarsDTA @ Mar 11th 2008 7:09PM
Amd does have one thing better than intel. Those new stickers look better than intel pink centrino 2 stickers

Roadmaps != products..Until something ships its pretty much vaporware as far as I'm concerned when it comes to AMD.
CosterMonger @ Mar 11th 2008 11:19PM
you said it,
I'll believe it when I see the reviews from the reviews websites.
waiting for that B3 stepping, come on AMD I'm cheering for you so the market doesn't go stagnant.
Jon Doe. @ Mar 11th 2008 8:07PM
First what? To loose at life this year?
Chris @ Mar 11th 2008 8:25PM
But is it still 65nm ? If it is they need to keep working. I'm not saying this because I hate AMD, I just wish they were a little more competative with Intel.(not including the under $150 cpu's)
jake @ Mar 11th 2008 9:20PM
How did AMD slip to this stage anyways; used to be most people recommend AMD for computer builds, now it's mostly intel that's dominating. Is it marketing, or is it really true their product line is slipping? I used to have an Athlon but the MB died b/c of bad capacitors and when I looked for a replacement I found the Core 2 was better for my build. In terms of gaming, ATI and nVidia seems to be mostly on par. It's just AMD is below Intel right now it seems.
UKNigel @ Mar 11th 2008 11:13PM
Yes, what a looser yoo ar!
Miikun @ Mar 12th 2008 1:29AM
I wonder if AMD's cross licensing agreements would allow them to make a Core 2 clone like the old 386/486 clones they made back in the 90s? Maybe they should just do this for a generation until their in-house technology catches up.. It would probably hurt their egos, but not their pocketbooks.
Allen @ Mar 12th 2008 2:07AM
I've been reading rumors that AMD will have the first quad core mobile CPUs, based on the (fixed) Phenom cores. That would put AMD back on the map quick: they may not be able to stand up and fight knuckle to knuckle with Intel, but if they can be more clever, well that's won plenty of battles before...
