Screen Grabs: giant Linksys WiFi router is The Internet
Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Complete internet downtime is no laughing matter, but more frightening still is the prospect that the world's data flow is completely beheld to a giant, taciturn Linksys WiFi router. South Park clip embedded after the break -- we're still trying to decide whether this trumps the Aqua Teen episode where they meet the Wwwyzzerdd, freakish master of the internet.

Hm...

How do we know it's the Linksys WiFi router that's giant? Maybe the South Park characters are all really 1" tall and the Linksys router is normal size.
SimonRichards @ Apr 18th 2008 12:44PM
This site actually lets you watch.

Original.
Paulmichael @ Apr 18th 2008 1:20AM
Kenny didn't even make an appearance in this episode! Rather depressing, too. His demise usually makes my day so much better!
Yevon @ Apr 17th 2008 11:24PM
Really? No one caught this South Park episode yesterday in the Engadget HQ? This news was sooo one day ago.
jk

And your point...oh right...you don't have one. Carry on with the bitching.
Mobius_1 @ Apr 18th 2008 8:32AM
They didn't have internet
Michael LaFramboise @ Apr 17th 2008 11:26PM
As long as its not running stock firmware I'm cool w/ it...
phanbouy @ Apr 17th 2008 11:31PM
the neanderthals who lived in the apt. upstairs from me always had their LINKSYS network open. i doubt it's because of their generosity.
so, i sorta went ahead and loaded custom firmware on it, optimized the settings for my taste, and changed the router password. i figured i should at least be able to get as much bandwidth as i could leach from them to make up for the hours and hours of sleep lost.
thank you linksys. i think.
Bryan Jackson @ Apr 18th 2008 3:26AM
My downstairs neighbor used to have an unsecure WRT54G. He was also quite loud and obnoxious.
I decided to load DD-WRT on his router and insert a DNS rule that had the effect of * goes to tubgirl.
Hilarious. I saw his router go on and off over the next few days as I'm sure he thought that power cycling would change it. He then bought a netgear router (noted from the change in names), but this time he secured it.
Bummer.
Gaz @ Apr 18th 2008 12:39PM
Hope ya got the router out the trash, I use mine as a client bridge, eliminates the need for any crappy dongles :-)

BEST EVER! lol This is GREAT! I'm gonna start taking pictures all the time now!
Striker @ Apr 18th 2008 12:01AM
Actually, the default username and password for a Linksys router is no username, and the password is "admin" gosh get it right lol
daniel @ Apr 18th 2008 12:16AM
actually, the login can be anything for the user name as long as you type admin for the password. Atleast most Linksyses (Linksi?) that I've seen
Balls. @ Apr 18th 2008 12:19PM
You don't need a username period for the WRT54G. It just authenticates based on password.
Juice Daddy @ Apr 17th 2008 11:36PM
I totally called it
nobody heard me... but I called it...
Henry @ Apr 17th 2008 11:38PM
i think everyone with some sort of computer background knew he was going to reboot the internet (router).
phanbouy @ Apr 17th 2008 11:42PM
anyone else using firefox 3b5? i haven't been able to install adobe flash and i dont feel like opening IE to view that south park clip
Nushio (NDF - Blue) @ Apr 17th 2008 11:53PM
Fedora 8 - Werewolf (Linux) user here reporting from F3B5.
What I did was install Flash as normal, then copy the entire plugins dir from firefox2, into the plugins dir of firefox3.
That seemed to work.
Jared @ Apr 18th 2008 12:25AM
I *just* updated Firefox to 2.0.0.14 on Mac 10.4 and now flash videos won't show without scrolling part of the video out of the browser view. Grrr.. they fixed that problem with 2.0.0.13 and now brought it back!.
ddub @ Apr 18th 2008 1:39AM
I'm running 3b5, and flash is the only thing I can get to work.
Speedmonkay @ Apr 17th 2008 11:46PM
I love how they talk with it all "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" style ....
CraigJ @ Apr 17th 2008 11:49PM
I was all ready for the router to respond and break a window... I gotta watch that movie this weekend...
CraigJ @ Apr 17th 2008 11:48PM
if they had loaded it with dd-wrt they wouldn't have had a problem. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php
