Nokia just announced a trio of "Beautiful to use" Nokia handsets with its Nokia 6600 slide, 6600 fold, and 3600 slide. The €250 6600 fold is said to smoothly arc open with the press of a button to reveal a 2.13-inch OLED display sporting 16 million colors. It also features tap commands. When off, a double-tap of the monolithic cover reveals the time, messages and missed calls. A double-tap also snoozes alerts and silences or rejects incoming phone calls. The €275 6600 slide (pictured left) features the same tap technology but bumps the digital camera up from 2 to 3.2 megapixels with a 2.2-inch QVGA display based on LCD tech, presumably. The 3600 slide offers the same camera with built-in background noise cancellation -- a first for a Nokia handset -- for a respectable €175. All three ship in Q3.

Judging by the buttons, these look like Series-40 phones. What's interesting (to me, at least), is the apparent forward-facing camera on the 6600 slide. Does this mean it is another HSPDA Series-40 handset?
Let's hope we see these in the US soon.
harveyhanson @ Apr 28th 2008 6:27AM
Yep, defo S40 phones, suppose that keeps them reasonably priced, and its a good enough platform for most people.
The phone on the right side would be perfect if it had the same screen as the one on the left, grr nokia, never quite get it right for me do ya!
Xan @ Apr 28th 2008 6:28AM
seems like 'teh seks' to me...
dervheid @ Apr 28th 2008 6:38AM
Looks like a re-skinned 6500 slide (wot I have!)
Nice though.
Hope it's a bit lighter than the 6500s, and that you can recharge through the USB, not have the extra (unnecessary, and fragile) charger port.
L @ Apr 28th 2008 6:56AM
If you're talking about the 6600 Slide (the one to the right), then yes for both questions. It is lighter than the 6500 Slide (110g instead of 125g), and it uses a combined microUSB post for data, audio-out and charging...
BowserUSC @ Apr 28th 2008 6:41AM
I really like the 6600 fold.
Frederik @ Apr 28th 2008 8:55AM
Can't wait to see the 6600 fold in South East Asia. I am so saving my money for it.
BowserUSC @ Apr 28th 2008 8:57AM
You'll get it long before I do in the US
OVerclockerX @ Apr 28th 2008 7:09AM
Interesting, I have been looking for a phone to replace the one I have now (The Original 6600, also I have a N-Gage). I think Ill get the 6600 Slide to replace the 6600 and get either an N95 or N81 to replace the N-Gage.
They gotta run S60 though
Fernando @ Apr 28th 2008 7:20AM
And they have the Java version of Nokia Maps!
Pdexter @ Apr 28th 2008 7:41AM
6600 slide looks great thought for me 6500 slide is still the one i like most.
Steffen Jobbs @ Apr 28th 2008 8:33AM
It's no wonder Nokia is the world leader in handset sales. These trio of phones are really terrific looking handsets. They must have some great designers on their staff. And yet Motorola can't even get one decent-looking phone to sell.
dervheid @ Apr 28th 2008 8:50AM
Maybe MOTO need to address some QUALITY issues.
I never liked the RAZR, looked good until you actually got hold of one. Yeuch!
K-RAZR was OK though.
kadajawi @ Apr 28th 2008 9:08AM
wow. They look amazing (especially both 6600 models), but I wonder how easily they will be scratched. And S60 should be the way to go.
Tom Myers @ Apr 28th 2008 10:12AM
S60 maybe the more 'powerful' platform, and be a fundamentally more flexible OS for a smartphone, but for actually using it everyday, Series40 is a lot nicer, which is probably why they still use it.
get the latest S60 phone (N95, E65) next to the latest S40 phone (6500, say), and press the left direction button (which creates a new text, for those unfamiliar). while the S40 phone instantaneously goes to the new text screen, the S60 phone will still be loading all the APIs and display elements of all the things required for the 'create text' screen. it takes 2-5 seconds, every time. 'loading' the main menu is the same, 'loading' the contacts, it's all very fragile feeling. S40 can't do blackberry style email or multitasking, but it does work as a phone.
still important. if i don't get an iPhone, i'll stick with S40.

@Tom
Having had 10 S40 phones in a row, I opted for the something different when my 6233 died last week. I decided to finally try out s60 with the nokia e51. I have to say, it's incredibly responsive, easily as fast as my old 6233. I think the hardware has finally caught up with the operating system on the newer phones.
Pdexter @ Apr 28th 2008 10:41AM
Huge amount of people still go for "high end" dumb phones. Example just look how long 6500 slide was in top 5 in uk sales(dunno if it's still there).
And not to talk about how many s60 low end/mid phones(high end s40 phones) we have seen already so it's about time we start to see some nicely specced s40 phones.
zark @ Apr 28th 2008 1:32PM
@tom:
"while the S40 phone instantaneously goes to the new text screen, the S60 phone will still be loading all the APIs and display elements of all the things required for the 'create text' screen."
Nope... Current S60 has a set delay on the left key in the standby screen. It is waiting to see whether you press the keylock ("left key" + *).
AieeeCP @ Apr 28th 2008 11:15AM
Believe it or not I actually find none of the Nokia designs either that different, or that interesting. They all seem far more functional then aesthetic, and both of the slide phones are very similar in design terms, and none of them appeal. But, I suppose each to their own.
Soze @ Apr 28th 2008 11:49AM
Well these 3 phones of course look like a same, but in my opnion phones like 6500 classic, 6500 slide, 5310XpressMusic, N78 and not to even talk about 8xxx series (like 8800 arte) look great and Nokia has huge variety of phones thought N series look a bit too same.
If you happen to like flips then it's a another problem because look wise it has really been hard to find good looking phones from them imo.
Tt might be true that to be number one in this business you need some kinda of neutral looks with many phones, but thankfully they make so many different models in a year so there's always something for all...or at least most of the time.
Reid @ Apr 28th 2008 11:43AM
That is VERY hot. This looks a lot like the Samsung D500 I had a few years ago.
I personally find the clamshell phone design to be fatally flawed by the necessity of a second screen, so I wouldn't own one. But sliders rule.
Deed @ Apr 28th 2008 12:46PM
Clamshell phone sounds partially like my Panasonic VS6, which also has a hinge button and alleged 16 million colour display, as well as a 2MP camera. No touch interfaces though but that's all it seems to be lacking. It cost less than £100 in 2005.
Lawl touch technology.

AttractedRhyme @ Apr 28th 2008 11:21PM
Can anyone clarify me that if OLED display is better than LCD then why nokia doesn't adopts it for every set?
n both OLED and LCD screen are with 16 million colors so will there be any difference in viewing quality or contrast ratio?
Craig M. @ Apr 29th 2008 3:33AM
The 6600 Fold looks like a beauty. I cannot wait until it is released in North America. I can guarantee Nokia that I will be purchasing this phone upon its release. Nokia has come a long way and has always had top-notch quality products.
