Verbatim's new SmartDisk HDD is so small we could just eat it up
Because history has proven that hard drives must get smaller and more capacious, Verbatim went and released the 500GB 2.5-inch SmartDisk HDD. Despite claims from others, Verbatim says this marks the first available 9.5mm Z-height 2.5-inch hard disk. The drive is made up of three 166GB platters striped with Perpendicular Magnetic Recording at 5400RPM. With enclosure, it weighs in at less than 6 ounces and measures 3.38-inches by 5.38-inches by 0.63-inches in both USB and USB / FireWire combo versions. Expect it this summer for under $300.

USB, Firewire... blah blah blah. Can I crack it out of the case and put it IN my laptop?

I was going to put a trademark response, literally dripping with sarcasm regarding the irrelevance of your comment to this article.
Then I realised I was just jealous of you owning a game that I have stopped... nay, FORCED myself not to purchase as tommorow begns the first of 7 of the most important exams in my life thus far spread over 3 weeks and to indulge in said game would screw me over more than I already am.
Enjoy it my friend....enjoy.

If you're late to the show, my reply was to someone telling everyone he was playing GTA 4, before it was rightfully deleted.
joshky @ Apr 29th 2008 8:34PM
just out of curiosity....but are you by any chance talking about the IB exams?
w00t @ Apr 29th 2008 10:20AM
Are you sure?
From where I'm standing it looks like you're spamming blogs with childish comments about it instead! :)

Awesome I think I'll get one to use with time machine on my macbook pro. I really like the design, but the price is a little high, I think.

can get 1000GB external hard drive for $100 less and not much bigger in size
500GB internal notebook drives are cheaper too
not for me, but whatever floats your boat
SjG @ Apr 29th 2008 1:24PM
Internal 9.5mm 2.5" 500GB notebook drives? Where? I've been looking, and nobody sells 'em!

It does seem a little expensive for the size. Vivian Taibi

Is Firewire 800 really too much to ask for? The bigger the drive, the more beneficial it would be! Ugh.
Paul in Maryland @ Apr 29th 2008 11:38AM
This drive is external; why do Verbatim's PR folks think we'll find the 9.5mm standard height a selling point...or even relevant? What IS a selling point is not even mentioned here, but is mentioned in Verbatim's press release: This drive is bus-powered.
Patriks7 @ Apr 29th 2008 12:07PM
and what exactly is bus powered?
do u have to be in a bus to use it? [jk]
Silverfrog @ Apr 29th 2008 12:22PM
Bus powered means the drive runs without needing an external AC adapter or power cord. It literally feeds from the power of the data cable itself.
Mark @ Apr 29th 2008 12:58PM
Yeah, right, first 9.5mm thick 500GB 2.5" hard drive available.
But it's not available yet, now is it?
AlphaTeam @ Apr 29th 2008 2:14PM
This article title sounds really dirty...
Kasi Viswanath @ Apr 29th 2008 3:19PM
I have been using the WD Passport 250GB which weighs around 120gms or so (around 4 ounces). It is bus powered (no external power cables required). It is very small and looks great. WD is now shipping the 320GB ones too for around $150. I agree, they lack the firewire ports that verbatim has on them.
Around $300 (299.99) for a 500GB with a firewire? Is this anyting a deal. I personally don't think so. It would probably have been a deal, 6 months back may be.

All that matters is that I can store my 500GB of pr0n on it and can hide it.
Dammit. I remember that 500GB on print doesn't mean 500gb on comp.
