9X Media shoots for multi-monitor crown with 30 LCD monster
While we wouldn't be surprised if there's at least a few makeshift multi-monitor setups out there to challenge it, as far as ready-made solutions go, it's pretty tough to beat this massive rig from 9X Media, which packs a room-busting 30 screens. What's more, you can apparently get it configured with your choice of 19- to 32-inch displays, which can be arranged in any number of different configurations (complete with multi-screen servers). Of course, if that's a bit too excessive for you, 9X Media will also gladly sell you any number of smaller configurations, although you'll have to chat them up for a quote if you move beyond the nine to twelve screen range.

WANT. NEED. NEVER WILL AFFORD.
- Requesting closure of maximized window.
- Roger that. Moving cursor from screen A3 to J1. ETA 5 mins.
- Copy.
DAMN!
Wow...
reminds me of the setup I dreamed about in '97 when goldeneye came out.
When I was five, I imagined that there was such a thing as a unicorn. And this was before I had even heard of one, or seen one. I just drew a picture, of a horse, that could fly over rainbows, and a had a huge spike in its head. I was five! Five-years-old. Couldn't even talk yet.
Deckard, are you willing to take your own test?
Wow.
Just as i get used to my new 24 incher...
They should make seamless ones though.
Why are we still stuck at 30" and 2560x1600?
I'm actually more interested in a computer that has 30 video outputs.
Yeah and the GPU attached. Can someone say Geforce 9999999999999999999999999999 GXTUZXTTTZT XT Overclocked Nuclear cooled something.
If you follow the article link, they sell video wall controllers (a server with their boards) for up to 64 monitors. It's probably not very cheap though - their 16 screen model (the last with the price on the site) is US$7200...
For those big operation rooms, it's probably quite acceptable. For home users, not so much :-)
Of course, for many uses you could just send the data into several networked servers and use several dual or quad-output cards per server.
that is very Pretty...
dude... podaman! i just watched that today!
I would prefer one big lcd too, but guess applications for these multi-monitor setups are different.
Maybe a lcd with a resolution like this new 35-Megapixel LCOS display chip... 8192x4320 pixel would rock :) But dual DVI wouldn't be quite enough :)
Gizmodo beat ya on this one. Always fun to see which blog breaks stories first... Helps my boring day pass by a bit quicker! haha ciao.
You sad bastard :)
Gizmodo also beat their way out of being a grown up blog many many months ago.
Meh, I've always been annoyed by these. Look, does no one notice the separation between monitors? It annoys me, you couldn't say, watch a movie, or play a game on these and if you did you'd loose stuff in the cracks! Skip the "multi-display" and just give me on big jumbotron.
I notice. I also notice the impossibly gargantuan fill rate and frame buffer this will need will probably require you to somehow SLI 10 entire computers, unless each screen has a ridiculously low resolution of 320x240 or some such.
@Loonie
Well.. SLI doesn't work with multiple monitors.. so that pretty much solves that..
That is so cool!!! Would be very useful for radiologists who look at images all day!!
Wouldn't a massive, very high quality projector system be a much cheaper and maybe even better solution?
That's what I was thinking.. Might not be as bright though.
Well, if you just want a large screen, yes. But if you get this massive beast with 30'' lcds with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 each, then when you put this thing together you now have a screen with a resolution of 25,600 x 4, 800
Why do you need a screen with that insane of a resolution? I dont know.
what's not apparent from the article is those planetary images are actual size.
Or, perhaps, they're nano-scale monitors and those are individual atoms, in which case each 'pixel' would actually be a 'quarkzel'!

True. I wander how many plug outlets this thing would require... :/
30, right? Is this a trick question?
FAP FAP FAP
That isn't an actual rig, it's an image made with Photoshop to demonstrate what X-Top technology is capable of. It's capable of supporting over 100 monitors, not just 30. There was a review in April 2007 about this technology, at the website Multi Monitor Information, in fact they used that exact image at the bottom of the article. It's cool news but certainly not new news.
Oh... 9X Media. I remember finding these case some 5 or 6 years ago. Seems that they haven't changed their website in a long time. Their prices still suck, too. Though, this is hardly news... they've been doing insane setups for years.
COOL!!!!!
Just what I need surfing porn on the net.
All i have to say is BARCO. Barco can make a video wall as large as you want it. All made out of 800x600 screens. You want a 500 screen wall they can do and have done it. Barco's controller senses how many screens you have and configures it accordingly.
Go to any concert or trade show to see them.
They're gonna need some smart software for that baby...they should consider cglx! http://www.cglx.org
Too excessive? Why would it be too excessive? Just because it is more likely bigger than the size of the wall in my bedroom.
How about the 11x5 LambaVision at UIC's EVL (electronic visualization laboratory in Chicago) ?
