Vosonic's VP5700 shames the PMP acronym
After careful deliberation, we can only assume Vosonic's VP5700 is some form of portable media player, but considering just how unsightly it is, the actual nomenclature is probably a non-issue. Nevertheless, this unit features a 3.5-inch display, way too much plastic, a bizarre looking control scheme, a multicard reader and support for a slew of image, audio and video files. Mum's the word on a price / release date (again, not like you care, right? Right.), but those flash cards sure look as if they're entering the device mighty hastily, wouldn't you say?

Update: Seems this thing may actually be a photo backup device -- thanks Almus!

That's... Ugly.
Is that the front or the back?
Reminds me of a Game Gear for some reason
whats up with the clown fishes? apple has them in their products and now vosonic does too
Probably to indicate you'd look like a clown by buying their products.
I think Apple's has to do with Jobs (at the time) owning Pixar. And the movie Finding Nemo. Vosonic, on the other hand, is just copying apple.
hmm? the control layout is pretty similar to Creative Zen... its just twice as thick.
Looks to me like another portable media card backup device (or maybe thats just what I hope it is) takes multiple formats of memory card, backs the card up to the internal hard drive, lets you preview your images and movies (even in raw format) and put your card back in your photos or video camera to continue shooting. I know there are a few products out there that do this, but comparing this to those, it looks nice.
@ Almus:
oh my, you are absolutely right!
read the engadget's original article and took it at face value, this thing is a crappy PMP.
saw your comment, followed the read link and read the original website, this is clearly a much enhanced backup device. it supports 2.5 inch SATA HDD's (up to a max of 250gb) has a user replaceable 2500 mA battery (np-100 battery, fujifilm?), pictbridge compatible, and support a wide range of memory card formats and video/audio codecs.
this product just got a WHOLE lot more interesting!
Nice catch, Almus!
"...those flash cards sure look as if they're entering the device mighty hastily, wouldn't you say?"
I'd say they're trying to leave.
"...but those flash cards sure look as if they're entering the device mighty hastily, wouldn't you say?"
or leaving the device mighty hastily!!!
Damn, I came here to say this.
When I saw this, the frist thing that came to mind was "Gameboy on steroids"
I believe this meant to be used as an image tank instead of a pmp.
I have a Vosonic VP-8360, and it's really handy for long holidays to store all my photos on so I don't have to lug around a laptop. I dont care if it's ugly, as long as it's functional.
Don't be so quick to criticize every product which isn't made to win design awards. As long as it's quick to transfer files, has a lot of format support and keeps my files safe, then I'm happy. If I can buy the product a lot cheaper because the company didnt have spend a fortune researching what would make it look the prettiest, even better..
it's actually a frame reversed, they're really fleeing
I hope thats how fast you can unload your memory sticks from that thing.. In fact, IT BETTER! BLAZING UNLOADING SPEEDS.. WILL PUT HOLE THROUGH AN UNKNOWN SUSPECTORS HEAD!
so um engadget editors do you actually read the pages you linking to or do you just look at the pictures and make wild assumptions?
If you don't need a screen for picture viewing, you may be better off with one of Nexto's offerings.
Kim Jong-il is burning with envy...
looks like the old sega nomad
Ihave had 2 Vosonic over the last 6 years and both have been fantastic in a wide range of activities. their promary pupose of mobile storage for photography is brilliant - fast back up of a wide range of cards good size screen for reviewing shots. As a mobile device for transferrin larger amounts of data - brilliant. As a portable digital recorder - easy to use records in aac format brilliantly. Agree it might not look as flash and as pretty as some other way more expensive devices but bang for buck , this has it. Utilitarian functional and useful as!!!!
Looks like you dismissed yet another product you don't know anything about and failed to understand mighty hastily, wouldn't you say?
"the PMP acronym"
PMP isn't an acronym.
This can view RAW files from Canon, Nikon, etc. It also display histogram of your shots. This is the most complete all possible backup and PMP out there. Is ugly, but very functional. I had the older version and went on a month vacation. Put 30+ hours of movies for my 20 hrs flight and also use it for my digital camera backup. Can anyone iPod, Cowon, etc do this?
