Xentex dual 13.3-inch screen laptop surfaces on eBay
Yeah, we have no idea who ever needed a monster laptop with dual independently-pivoting 13.3-inch screens, but if you're feeling like living particularly large, there's a Xentex Flip-pad Voyager prototype for sale on eBay right now for the bargain starting bid of $99. You'll have to provide a custom hard drive cable and figure out how to boot it past the BIOS, but if you do, you'll have ultimate giant laptop bragging rights over your friends -- as well as an 850Mhz Athlon, 128MB of RAM, and a floppy drive. Yeah, we know you want one anyway. Some more pics past the break and at the read link.

That states that this product was actually sold for $5000 and isn't a prototype.
as does http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/334/C1183/
Don't be so quick to tut-tut Engadget. Here's the eBay listing with it at $99 and stating "this was a prototype and is missing some parts" hence being called a prototype, purchased "a few years back." This contraption first made an appearance in 2002 and has probably been refined beyond the prototype stage since then.

So, is this the first prototype of the DS?
:P
Can I boot osX86 on it? Two MacBooks for much less than the price of one.
That is so freaking cool!
Why?
Like every other useless thing's excuse: Why not?
Mmm, this is more in the "Why nuts" category.
It's a solution that is in need of a problem.
WTF ?
Looks like someone sawed it in half then glued the pieces together.
How do you know they didnt??
:P
Now thats true multitasking.
It looks like a Franken-top.
And man do I want one.
I agree. Feature-wise, it looks like a very nice computer.. with the obvious exception of the processor and RAM and probably hard drive :P
Kinda looks like a Star Trek prop.
Oh, I totally agree, man!
I see what
You did there
Isn't this pointless? Assuming each screen has 1280x800 resolution, then 2 of them combined would be 1600x1280 which is way less than 1920x1200 found in many laptops.
They're separate 13.3 inch screens side-by-side stood on end. Small by themselves, decent together, huge back in 2002 when this laptop first went to market.
yes if it was made today
you would have had two 19" inch laptop that wold mean 38" total and each one would have the power to play Crysis against each other
I know i won't win but at least iI placed the 1st bid.... (any Consolation prize for doing so ?)
Sure, have an extra slice of STFU

@ Craig,
LOL
FUGLY
It would make playing Doom interestiing.
An Athlon? As in the Athlon 'Thunderbird'? LMAO. Well, it was the king of the hill back then. But still, for 5K, I would have expected at least a desktop Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2 coupled with some Geforce 8800Ms.
Core 2 Duo in 2002? Can I use your time machine? I'd like to go buy a few hundred gallons of gas for $1.25
This is hilarious. I worked for a VC firm that did Sales Plans for VC companies with new and aspiring products. this was the last project i worked on, and that was in 2001. Supposed to be a "big hit" with accountants and sales people who want to make "on the fly" sales presentations ala powerpoint, etc. and sit across from each other. never knew that made it into production!
Ha! HA! HAHAHAHAahahahaa!
I remember this!!!
So, turn on the way back machine to 2000. I worked for Appian Graphics Inc, a little company in Redmond Washington that made the (world famous) Jeronimo J2 dual monitor graphics card.
Anyone every had one of those?
I didn't think so.
Anyway, we had a vendor/reseller conference and the gues from Xentex showed up because, tada! They had a dual monitor laptop and we made a dual monitor graphics card.
It didn't work out, unfortunately, but I remembering being in some awe of that monstrosity
W00t! I'm winning!
You should check its specs first... it's actually just 128MB RAM... 16MB VideoRAM... and .8GHz... it's freaking heavy... it's too huge... and you can't enjoy a nice wide screen movie because of the divide... plus... you can't multitask with that kinda specs... Vista and Mac OS Leopard will only work well under 1GB RAM, 256MB Video Ram, and 1.8GHz... and that's the minimum...
Besides, it's a laptop---duh... you place it in your lap not a desktop...!!!
It's not something you want to carry about school or outside because of its weight and size!!!
It's not slim, trendy, not powerful... so far the only things that make it looks special are the desktop-number of ports and usb slots... and the stupid half-wit flip screen...
Where's the nice video adapter (nVida, Radeon?)... you can't play sims there, not warcraft, not counter strike... what more for Sims 2, WoW etc... who works with at least 512MB RAM and 128MB VRAM??? I bet there's no screen-resolution correction tech... clear bright (tm)? sharp?...
PLUS IT'S FREAKINGLY FUGLY... whatever happened to mobility, to style... that thing looks like a rock...
