Nikon readying D90 for launch?
We don't have much to go by, but the image above image might just be the Nikon D90, successor to the well-received D80 -- then again, it might be a photoshop, too. (The more we look at it, the more the area in/around the D90 badge looks pretty sloppy.) According to Nikon Rumors, it might be due as early as tomorrow; we'll let you know if the kit goes from rumor to reality.

Whether or not they'll announce it tomorrow, the image is a photochop job. The logo and the flash mechanism looks off perspective to the rest of the camera. From there it also looks like a D300 shrunken down a bit.
nimro @ Jun 15th 2008 4:16PM
I concur, this image has been 'shopped!
Still looking forward to the D90 though.
chych @ Jun 15th 2008 4:21PM
Yeah the fact that there is a 'mode' button next to the shutter release, and a function dial with MASP modes on the left, pretty much gives it away that it isn't the real thing.
Wildness @ Jun 15th 2008 4:46PM
Total Photoshop Chop - look at the 9 in D90, it doesn't match the D or the 0.
Chicksta @ Jun 15th 2008 6:04PM
It's not a D300; it doesn't match mine in several areas...
Josh Warner @ Jun 15th 2008 10:55PM
Definitely not a shrunken D300. Take one look at the focus mode switch and that is obvious - both the D200 and D300 have C, S, and M options (continuous focus, single focus, and manual focus) while this presents only AF and M options with no differentiation between the continuous and single options.
Honestly I concur with your 'shopped assessment (the flash mechanism does seem subtly off in perspective, and that style of Dx0 badge hasn't been used since the D70) but I don't think the D300 was the base image. Maybe the new D60's press shots were used as a base for this?
gad get @ Jun 15th 2008 11:36PM
Probably a Photoshopped D300. Definitely a PS job though. That D90 logo is very fishy looking. Plus, the area around the logo looks a bit patchy, like a bad copy/paste job. I call fake.
billy bob thorton @ Jun 16th 2008 12:00AM
I upsets me that you guys keep posting fake images when you know that they are obvously fake just so you have an image to go along with the story. I mean come on, the left hand side is so poorly cloned that it looks like it's melted.
I believe you guys are aware of how many other sites post your stories in real time. So you guys are basically a news organization, like it or not. Credibility should be a concern.
Liam @ Jun 15th 2008 4:29PM
I just bought a 400d last week (£270 or a bit less than $600), then two budget DSLRs come along at once! Harumph. Suppose that's the way it goes.
Do the 'prosumer' Nikons have DOF preview buttons or not? I thought I heard that somewhere...
wickedpheonix @ Jun 15th 2008 5:51PM
the D80 has one at least, it goes to reason that the D90 would have one.
slackercow @ Jun 15th 2008 7:31PM
D70 also has DoF preview
RobJ @ Jun 16th 2008 1:01PM
The D70/D80 have DOF preview, but the D50/D40/D60, sadly, do not. One would assume a D90 would have it.
luinfana @ Jun 15th 2008 4:33PM
is it just me or does that "90" look like a crappily 'shopped "80"?
Some Kid @ Jun 15th 2008 4:34PM
have we now come up with a new verb for something digital that is fake/
'shopped?
anywho, this needs to be the new version of the D3X with 40 megepixels
that'd be cool!!
Rumle Skafte @ Jun 15th 2008 4:42PM
really... thats a weak fake!
Joshua Walters @ Jun 15th 2008 5:09PM
Nice!
I have a Canon though, and WAY to much invested in lenses to switch.
Thomas Bags @ Jun 15th 2008 5:14PM
that flash looks dinky
wickedpheonix @ Jun 15th 2008 5:50PM
Extremely obvious photoshop - that 9 is a dead giveaway.
Other than that, I'm mildly interested - I just got a D80 last week for my 6 week trip in a week and a half, but I wouldn't have any buyer's remorse even if the D90 came out tomorrow - I got it brand new with the 18-135 kit lens for $650 off of a typo =D It was also the only way in hell I would've been able to afford one - so if the D90 comes out tomorrow I really couldn't care less because I got a kick-ass steal =D
paul-engadget @ Jun 15th 2008 6:00PM
maybe it's obvious to say, but you can't take photos with a camera unless it exists and you have it in your possession.
by that, I mean if you wait and wait for the next even better camera, you'll never buy one, and never take any photos. sometimes you've just got to decide that this one is good enough.
still, it does hurt when you buy one and just too late to return it to the retailer something so much better comes out! Me, I stop reading the review sites for 6 months when I buy something new!
happy_penguin @ Jun 15th 2008 6:01PM
Fake. Happy D70 user here. I'm not sure when I'll be ready to upgrade but I'm always interested in what the camera manufacturers are up to next.
Emexci @ Jun 15th 2008 6:02PM
Come on guys, that is sure a fake image. D90 must looking better to kill the canon 450d :)
BrettB @ Jun 15th 2008 6:12PM
Actually, bad photoshop job aside, I think this thing looks way better built than the 450d/xsi. I liked the textured plastic that nikon uses on its lower end bodies. Feels a lot nicer than the cheap plastic canon uses.
mr-slice @ Jun 15th 2008 6:09PM
Not only is that photoshopped...it is a pathetically sloppy job.
BrettB @ Jun 15th 2008 6:10PM
Looks fake, but I hope they announce it. I've been holding off buying a DSLR hoping they announce the D80 successor soon. I'd buy a D60 if it had better lens compatibility, but I need the AF motor build into the body for certain lenses. Tomorrow would be amazing. That, and keep the body only for under $1k and I'm in.
dxprog @ Jun 15th 2008 6:24PM
You'd think with all these fancy cameras they'd be able to take a real picture instead of the vector graphic.
Eric @ Jun 15th 2008 6:27PM
definitely a mix between the nikon d80 and d300 pics with the logo being a chop of both of them also..
Cybes @ Jun 15th 2008 6:31PM
The D90 is a certainty, there's no questions about it or D3x (which has even been announced accidently through other companies), but yeah this picture makes me think fake, Photokina this year is when im expecting the timing of announcements to be around though!
DizD79X @ Jun 15th 2008 6:56PM
This would make my decision easier then. I have a D50 and been wanting to upgrade for some time but the D80 is more than long-in-the-tooth and the D300 is almost 2k for just the body. This would fill a much needed middle-ground between the D60 and D300.
And yes that image is very fake.
Richard @ Jun 15th 2008 7:31PM
The kids at the local community college have better Adobe skillz than the clown who made this.

Just to further show the obviousness of the 'shop:

Photoshopping a camera...
There really are no limits for these people

Sam - You took the words right out of my mouth.

Fake! Worst.Badge.Ever.
Ryan G @ Jun 16th 2008 11:12AM
I thought I remember that there was suppose to be a press release by today about the D90. At least, that's what I gathered from some other websites. I'll be dissappointed if Nikon doesn't release the D90 by the end of the summer because I'm buying the Canon 40D if not.
lionelbob @ Jun 17th 2008 3:26AM
I appear to be getting DoS at www.nikon.com, I wonder what everybody is looking at?
gadget007 @ Aug 7th 2008 7:03AM
Nikon D80 is an excellent camera but lack some new features such as live LCD. D90 will be a hot seller for sure. I am very interested to know how Nikon D90 compare with Canon XSi.
