PS3 2.41 firmware out now
Sony's 2.41 firmware update for the PS3 is apparently out and riding the network updates. This according to our readers and those of the official PlayStation Blog. Now deep breath, install, and hope your system doesn't hang like it did for the few 2.40 unfortunates.

Neat.
Here is the official Australian PS3 2.41 firmware link

ya just in time too. i was worried id hafta wait a while after i get one on thursday. funny thing is, i ordered my dualshock 3 ahead of time, but apparently, the white one doesnt come out until friday. hmmmm.
omg yes!!
I must be reading Engadget Twitter edition?
Downloading now.
*please don't brick my PS3*
Worked fine for me!
but 2.40 worked fine for me...
exactly
3rded
Im glad the new one has been fixed I have been really worried that mine was going to brick. Hopefully its all fixed.
what does bricked mean?
Only suitable for acting as a piece of masonry. Means yo shit is broke.
hahaha perfect explanation
Send that in to webster, 'cause that's the best definition I've ever heard.
It seems Engadget doesn't actually know. As the 2.40 problem did not actually cause it to "brick", it was recoverable..
But then it's rare these days that Engadget post anything accurate anymore, and concentrate more on creating headline grabbing news, than factual news...
To "Brick" a device means it's completly unusable do to a soft/firmware change. That is, turning the device into a brick.
Smashing with a hammer - not bricking
Installing a bad firmware update requireing a replacement - bricking
Installing bad software that loses your save files - not bricking
Hey all, they changed the look of the Platinum Trophy. It's not a purple crown anymore, its really cool now!
worked perfect for me. mine almost looked like it was going to brick tho. the video went black on me and i was thinking if i should actually turn it off or not, or if it was still downloading the update and something went wrong. i had to manually turn it off and on again, but everything worked like it should have after that. i wonder if anyone else had that problem.
the same thing happened to me but it came back thankfully!
I just installed this... and it bricked my 360!!!
This update is for PS3s.
EPIC FAIL
Can't you read, this update is for nintendo wii
Whooooooooooooooosh.
Methinks Daniel failed in this little shindig
It's funny when someone says EPIC FAIL and they really are just talking about themselves because they can't see the humor in the post....
i think he means the update is so "WOW" that the 360 became bricked from its greatness
Don't you mean - "I installed this on my ps3, and my xbox 360 bricked regardless" ?
Cheers!
Workin', but Super Stardust HD still doesn't give me trophies. I'll give them a few days to re-patch it I guess.
You first have to earn(deserve) a trophy
Buuuuuuurn.
You know you have to go back and "re-earn" trophies, right?
repatch what? The trophies worked great even with the 2.40 update which was fine as well unless ur a tard and fuked up the install somehow...
When they took down the 2.40 update they also took down the 4.00 update to SSDHD. They have put the update back up now so it is all working again, but for the last few days it was perfectly possible to have the 2.40 firmware but not have the version of SSDHD that enabled trophies without being a "tard" or having "fuked up"
Just like 2.40, 2.41 downloaded and installed successfully.
MY PS3 hasn't even figured out yet that there is 2.40. It still runs 2.36 and says system is up to date when I hit update via Internet.
2.40 was pulled so it wouldn't find that one. As for 2.41 give it 24 hours, the secure servers you access in your locale might not have seen the push yet. This story is after all fairly hot off the press.
will this solve my DNS issue i got after 2.40... it was working perfectly .. damn i even downloaded 2.40 thru it...
I thought I was downloading 2.40, and turned out it was 2.41.
No issues, and seemed faster than normal.
2.40 worked perfectly for me, but I may as well grab this when I get home.
You'll have to update to get on to PSN anyway
Just to be prudent, I believe I'll wait a few days before downloading this...
Updated my PS3 not even an hour ago from whatever version I had previously - not 2.40 - and it runs just fine. Can't vouch for you of course, but I think it'll work now or logically they wouldn't have released another version (touch wood)...
Is that Salad Fingers below the Loco Roco guy/thing/blob?
Play the original PSP game and you shall know.
There was a small cluster of people that had the bricking problem, but it was only just enough for them to pull the update.
I personally had no issues, just need to download this now
2.40 bricked my 40G AU unit. Swapping in a fresh HDD got it back up and running, albeit without my save games and other data.
Installing 2.41 on top of 2.40 worked with the new drive, and swapping the old drive back in I'm also able to boot with that in the system.
So, if you haven't formatted your HDD, and you have a spare HDD handy, you're able to recover this all by your self by upgrading to 2.41.
PS3 , will eventually catch up with xbox 360 ! But how long will we wait ?
The XMB sucks balls as far as i am concerned and the main reason and very vaild one is that you simply cannot access your music while playing a game. I ask myself how hard is it really to add this and shut some xbox fans up?
But really as soon as PS3 get there finger out there arse and make software that is more defined and can actualy challenge for an award at least.Untill then i will go round to my friends and play xbox online whether the PS3 updates its limited software.
OHH and btw MGS4 is probrably the second greatest game ever created first FF7 and is a great credit to kojima himself.
Spelling & Grammar detector status: Imploded.
But Snake would kick Cloud's ass.
Everything looks ok On my 320GB(40GB Version) PS3 after the latest update.
In fact I had no problem with the 2.40 either.

Jake,
Methinks i found a interesting fact. Engadget is part of the Time Warner Family. Perhaps they got infected by AOL?
duncan.macleod: Actually, it says that at the bottom of every Engadget (and other Weblogs sites) page.
Also, if you go to the Weblogs site, there's a column "Also on AOL".
Lastly, if I remember correctly, this has been stated in a few posts.
Good sleuthing! I would have never figured it out myself.
I just installed 2.41 and it installed great. But when i select quit game my ps3 restarts and turns back on again but everything is ok, is that right?
I have the same problem with my PS3, I installed the 2.40 update with no problems and have now installed the 2.41 update. When I hit the home button and select quit game the PS3 restarts by itself.

No, that's not right. Using the XMB to quit a game should act no different than when you quit a game by holding down the Home button and selecting "Quit Game".
The 2.4.1 update seems to run much more smoothly with the in game XMB but I'm pretty sure that's all they changed with this update.
Along with that little snafu you may or may not have heard about with 2.4.
Im still on the original firmware. Im not updating my ps3 until the haxx start rolling. Then we can see all the marvelous things programmers can come up with to add functionality.
how does that work? Do you not even use the ps3 for games? Whenever an update is released u either update ur system or you don't get to play online...

So what does this mean for those of us that were able to successfully install 2.40? I don't really want to go through another download and installation of a new firmware that is identical to 2.40 if I don't have to.
you have to install it, sony won't let you onto their servers without updated software
I don't believe trophies is working for me. I'm obliterating SSHD, and I haven't even gotten a Bronze yet. I guess you get a bronze for simply completing a planet, and I've beat 3 straight with out dying once. I don't know if I'm good enough to do that again, I kinda got lucky a few times.
Unless you have the 4.0 version of SSHD, trophies won't work. Sony took it down after the whole 2.40 issue. It should be back up soon. I was lucky enough to get it before they took it down. Got 12 trophies so far.
I did not have any problem with FW2.40 to begin with. Everything works fine. I have a 60GB PS# purchased back in Nov'06 - still works like a charm.
Anything new that wasn't in 2.40 other than not bricking systems, or is it just a required waste of bandwidth?
Anybody else got any problem with mediaservers after this update?
I'm running eyeconnect and can't get any videofiles playing.
Instead I get a a mediaserver error, seemed to be working fine this morning, before the update!
Has anyone discovered whether the issues for the IR2BT have been solved?
I just installed 2.41 and lost all my game data.
2.41 killed the HDMI output for me. Currently using s-video to see the XMB, backing up data and getting ready to reformat.
2.41 has a few problems.
I got error messages when attempting to create a new message while in game.
And secondly I have to reset my PS3 whenever I leave Battlefield and try to join up with people so that I can use my headset.
Dont install 2.41 if 2.40 worked for you .. i gota learn it the hard way ... i was playing MGS4 halfway and the bluray drive couldnt read the disc ... and once i restart the system .. i cant read any game at all, if you are thinking that the drive died of old age .. guess again .. the ps3 is only 3 weeks old so ..... definitely a patch problem .. GOD DAMNED .. they really neeed to test their firmware more ... i was gonna finish the game this weekend >_< ... so much frustration.
