Clove 2 typing glove leaves your other hand free for high fives
Have no fear, we're always on the hunt for new and innovative ways to boost your bombdigity quotient, and we've really found just the thing this time around. The Clove 2 interfaces with your computer over Bluetooth, and through a strange set of tapping gestures (that sort of remind us of that one Daft Punk video), allows you to type one-handed, sans keyboard. Seems like quite the learning curve, but we're sure it's totally worth it in the end. Four words per minute never looked so good. Video is after the break.

I wonder what they would use the other hand for :D
Kilburn @ Jul 13th 2008 9:20AM
for someone who wastes time in making useless 1 handed typing gloves that could potentially speed up the process of artheritas, I'm sure his other hand is just for highfives.
Mic2000 @ Jul 13th 2008 9:24AM
Well, really funny you say so, but I once made 2D Platform game with one button, and to be honoust, it is really relaxed that you have a hand free to take some chips or drinks while playing the game.
Kurian @ Jul 13th 2008 11:24AM
Ah yes...Perfect for erotic webcam sites.
SFO Kevin @ Jul 13th 2008 2:25PM
I wonder if they make this in a left hand model?... I like to use my right hand for "high fiveing"...
David Fitzy @ Jul 13th 2008 8:51PM
That is the left hand version. Remember typing is only your secondary use of hands when "high fiveing"
johnzilla @ Jul 13th 2008 11:53PM
@Kilburn
Your comment would be 87.38% funny if you learned how to spell "arthritis".
Etaanaru @ Jul 14th 2008 5:14AM
I'm pretty sure artheritas are my favorite Mexican food. Or drink.
I'd sooner get a Frogpad than this Powerglove, it's so bad.
initialxy @ Jul 13th 2008 9:19AM
I love the Power Glove. It's so bad!
go seki @ Jul 13th 2008 4:31PM
yeah I guess every extra word per minute would help on the iPhone... hah
but seriously the iPhone lacks the bluetooth connectivity required (at least at this stage running Apple's OS .. maybe Linux will have more luck once pwnage v2.0 is out)
josh @ Jul 13th 2008 9:39AM
And now I know that engadget not only listens to MSTRKRFT, but also daft punk.
Sam Stone @ Jul 13th 2008 10:18AM
Are you suggesting a website listens to music?
John @ Jul 13th 2008 9:44AM
Bad techno, bad concept.
Mac @ Jul 13th 2008 10:02AM
looks super uncomfortable :D :D :D
akstylish @ Jul 13th 2008 9:59AM
I'm sure most people can type 4 words/min one-handed without the glove. :/
master_sword @ Jul 13th 2008 10:04AM
if one could get skilled enough with one of those, that would be pretty sweet
Eric @ Jul 13th 2008 10:08AM
"leaves your other hand free for high fives"
Is that what you kids are calling it these days?
Blastar @ Jul 13th 2008 10:58AM
Calling what.. Grandpa ?
rita hainsworth @ Jul 13th 2008 10:19AM
wow, and its so good looking...

"bombdigity quotient"
I love you forever, Paul.
johnzilla @ Jul 13th 2008 11:55PM
Should be "bombdiggity".

simonpiper @ Jul 13th 2008 10:28AM
Should have used a Power Glove.
That is all.

nh @ Jul 13th 2008 10:33AM
Does this come in left handed version? I can't High 5 with my left.
linoge @ Jul 13th 2008 10:38AM
how about a new glove
that one looks like it was stolen from a homeless guy
Schfelzerberg @ Jul 13th 2008 10:54AM
The other hand's for your thing, so the glove's for controlling the computer and cleaning the white stuff?
Joe @ Jul 13th 2008 11:00AM
What's the point of this? The words "uuuhhh" and "hmmm" can easily be typed using one hand with a regular keyboard already, while the sentence "What are you wearing right now?" can easily be assigned to a macro.
Blastar @ Jul 13th 2008 11:08AM
I want a Virtual Reality Glasses and Virtual 3D typing.
Where is Johnny Mnemonic ?
No other kind of typing seems more cool than the one in that movie.

Keep laughing grandkids! While crude in its current stage, this is a wonderful concept which will no doubt be taken seriously by someone with the assets needed to see it to fruition.
It's nice to see someone using their time to be creative and not playing computer games.

Blastar @ Jul 13th 2008 11:47AM
Kids and Grandkids ?
Is there a war between Younger and elder ?
Do you thing that only young kinds read this blog ?
As about the device looks really cool but.. using you one hand as keyboard does really help you ?
Isn't this hard for your fingers and tendons ?
I think the way it works is very hard for your hand.
Christopher Mitchell @ Jul 13th 2008 12:09PM
Thanks, Icer, good to see someone taking my work seriously.
Generic @ Jul 13th 2008 2:14PM
@ Christopher Mitchell
how much manufacturing time did that take, from start to finish
Christopher Mitchell @ Jul 13th 2008 2:49PM
@Generic: I'd say total construction time was under a week, total, although it was spread across a few months for me.
moop @ Jul 13th 2008 7:49PM
@Blastar
This actually seems like a good alternative to typing, if it can be implemented more efficiently. There is less stress on the tendons than regular typing, and less repetitive motions. If anything, its a good workout for your hand too.

I know snark is the permanent soup de jour on this site, but perhaps the purpose is to help out those with only one arm. If it helps to get past masturbation jokes and into thinking about the disabled, think of wounded soldiers. That usually invokes some level of sympathy.
Christopher Mitchell @ Jul 13th 2008 12:05PM
Thanks. :) There's a bunch of applications, as far as I can see, mostly falling under the heading of active-use, such as in non-sedentary jobs, and accessibility, for those physically or mentally unable to type with two hands or on a keyboard.
Joe Pollicino @ Jul 13th 2008 12:23PM
OMG ITS NINTENDO 1980's all over again.
Eddie W @ Jul 13th 2008 1:27PM
I can see the application for something like this, but actually making it user friendly looks difficult. I'm wondering if this would be any faster than texting using one hand on numeral keys, which people seem to have adapted to.
MiLK @ Jul 13th 2008 2:03PM
Why not just use one hand to type on the keyboard, like im doing right now...
rento @ Jul 13th 2008 2:04PM
Handy!
Gfxlonghorn @ Jul 13th 2008 3:21PM
Uhh this guy could have saved a lot of time by just making a hand held version of morse code.. not to mention it would probably be typed much faster than that.
drumstyk1 @ Jul 13th 2008 3:29PM
hey if people are willing to type on the glass face of an iPhone, anything is possible in this industry!
jake @ Jul 13th 2008 4:13PM
Ummm. Get a grip people. Innovation and creativity are the backbone of humanity. Perhaps the glove would be great for controlling a device that only has 10 or 20 inputs. Might be useful for an astronaut on a spacewalk or entering numbers when a keypad is annoying to type on or carry around.
Christopher Mitchell @ Jul 13th 2008 4:34PM
That's the iPhone's fault for not accepting bluetooth HIDs. :D If it did, then this would indeed work with the iPhone, as it identifies as a bluetooth HID keyboard.
go seki @ Jul 13th 2008 4:33PM
heh .. sadly nothing (bluetoothy) works with iphone .. maybe then iphone = fail ?

It would be cooler if it used actual sign language.
Diogo W. @ Jul 13th 2008 8:39PM
Have you ever heard of the frogpad ?
http://www.frogpad.com/information/general.asp
Make it left-handed and use a simpler layout (mostly one click=one key), if you need multiple strokes for each key it's not better than a regular keyboard.
But kudos for the hard effort / innovation ! Congrats !

This is a realy great thing! I allways loved alternative user interfaces and this is one of them. Multi touch, movement tracking, voice recognition... But what I want is a way to make this things cheap and user friendly. We have the HW but we need the Software. Sadly my programming skills are limited to PHP but I will have to learn some things and then try to use that HW in user friendly way. At least that is the plan!

Someday we'll be planting tiny chips on each of our fingernails
while we're getting a manicure... or a digicure?
