Just when we were about to forget about you,
Centrino 2, here you come with your efficient bad self. Intel finally announced the new 802.11 Wi-Fi, integrated graphics-packing mobile platform after delays related to the wireless tech. Centrino 2 will come in two varieties: one for consumers and the vPro platform for the briefcase crew. The chipset can be configured for gamers, using a discrete graphics chip rather than the integrated set, if that's your thing. Of most import (or amusement) is Intel's HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle), which it says is the tech behind the Centrino 2's uber-efficiency -- faster speeds mean less time spent doing stuff, of course. It notes that the tech allows for an entire Blu-Ray disc to be played back for two hours on one battery charge. Finally, Intel promises a WiMax version this fall, so if you have the patience, you may want to wait for that barring further delays.

Are the new Macbook Pro's supposed to get these?
Luke @ Jul 14th 2008 11:41PM
Once everybody and their dog has updated theirs, the mighty "innovative" Apple will get around to it. ;)
dagamer34 @ Jul 15th 2008 12:33AM
Yep, along with a redesign.

Good summary of the technology behind Centrino 2 including switchable graphics!!! Does this mean a notebook that can do GOOD gaming while having great battery life on the go???

consumers and brief case crew? huh? is that like desktop and laptop? or desktop replacement? or mini-tower? owning a brief case doesn't mean a businessperson, and they can be consumers too. kinda confusing there.
Craig @ Jul 14th 2008 11:57PM
"the tech allows for an entire Blu-Ray disc to be played back for two hours on one battery charge"
Um...huh? What if said Blu-Ray disc has a 3-hour movie on it?
I are confused.
Bender Bending Rodriguez @ Jul 15th 2008 12:10AM
What is even more confusing is that the statement makes no qualification of the other items draining the battery or the mAh of the battery. The statement is just some silly hyperbole that makes absolutely no real world sense.

sol then

I like the HUGI idea. It's like "I'm always chilling out coz I work so fast I'm always finished."

if you go strictly by how things went last time around, santa rosa was announced in May 2007, was released in January 2008, and the Macbooks got updated at the end of February. So this time it would be released March 2008 and well see new Macbooks next year around the end of April.
I expect this to happen a bit faster though, and go by the same general schedule.
Although we might see something a lot faster, say... October release and Holiday season Macbook updates. Just speculation on my part though.

"More than 240 new laptops will be launched Tuesday using Intel's Centrino 2 platform."
I hope they don't list every single one.
Didou @ Jul 15th 2008 2:44AM
Is the default WiFi part of the draft-N nature or can builders still use 802.11G ? I would prefer the former personally but I guess that's not bound to happen until the norm leaves the draft & becomes a standard.
Erik @ Jul 15th 2008 3:16AM
ok.....wtf?
Wololo @ Jul 15th 2008 7:49AM
"It notes that the tech allows for an entire Blu-Ray disc to be played back for two hours on one battery charge."
Oh, well, that's nice. Now it allows entire discs to be played for two hours. I was just getting used to having to chop them in half.
Steve T @ Jul 15th 2008 11:24AM
so is the integrated graphics version of the chip out now too? i've heard it's available in a few weeks... and is Intel shipping in volume? or do we have to wait for them to ramp up production for the 200 laptops to become available...
ChronoZaga @ Jul 15th 2008 11:09PM
HUGI seems like a good step forward. Is that pronounced "Huggy," "Hoogie," "Who-Guy," or "Aytch-You-Gee-Eye?"
