Eee PC 1000H gets a $100 price drop
It's only been on sale for six days, but the pricetag on the Eee PC 1000H just dropped by $100, down to $549. We're not sure if early buyers will get that extra Benny back, but it certainly can't hurt to ask -- and ASUS, while you're at it, how about taking a little off the 901 as well?

Now, is this because of the MSI Wind or because Asus is going to release yet another model!?
for to have webcam AND 299 i am buying!!!! del fdw!!!!
Improper Grammar And Spelling FTL!!!
My 12.1" lenovo has an 89 key keyboard....why can't bigger laptops have just as many??
The Eee PC is the most overpriced laptop in its category.
It's probably because of the Acer One which is even cheaper than the MSI Wind. Maybe they're feeling some pressure - or maybe you're right, another net book in the works, this time with I don't know, more ram, more hd space, or something.
I still don't understand why someone would shell out even $550 for this when you can get a laptop with more juice, just a tad bigger and a CD/DVD drive that's albeit 1 or 2 more lbs for the same price OR one that has a screen 1.1 inches smaller for less. Or is this happy medium really worth it?
Before the Asus eeepc, you could not buy a 9 or 10 inch laptop for less than $1.500!
@Neoprimal
Because a 15 inch 3kilo laptop is not the kind you want to carry around all day.
For me this is a perfect mobile laptop, it is just missing 3G. And the price is great. for what you get.
Hey Apple,
Notice how even this puny computer has a real Delete key on it?
i'm confused... my apple computers have a delete key too... some have two... which leads me to believe you're not really sure about what you talk about.
help the rest of the world understand what you're trying to get across...
???
You're weird...
@Fozzy Bear
Yeah, I agree with you. I just used my MacBook's delete key to write this comment.
I'm confused... do you think he meant a 'delete' key that deletes forwards, like on a full-sized external keyboard?
Who's dumb enough to need that crap anyways?
delete != backspace
While the apple delete key functions as the MS "backspace" key, it takes any intelligent person approximately 3.5 minutes to get used to it. I have no need for a forward delete -- you just have to get used to clicking ahead, not behind.
Honestly, not really a big deal. Not really worth the gripe ;-)
erm, on my macbook, fn-delete is = ms delete. does that not work?
I didn't think Apple users made mistakes. They are so perfect, just ask one if you don't believe me.
Typical apologists: When presented with a flaw in their pet product, they always respond with, "Well, I don't need that anyway."
"I have no need for a forward delete -- you just have to get used to clicking ahead, not behind."
CLICKING? Thus proving my point: A simple operation that you can do using only one key on most computers requires you to use two hands, two keys, or two devices on a Mac laptop. There should be no need to use a trackpad, mouse, or function keys to delete characters in either direction at the insertion point.
"While the apple delete key functions as the MS "backspace" key"
Ah, the ignorance. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. Try these keys under ANY other GUI. They function properly. Even the regular Apple keyboards have both of these functions, despite the mislabeling.
But what do you expect from Apple, who inexplicably sets up its GUI to skip most types of fields when advancing through them with the Tab key? And who specially DISABLES the right button on its own multi-button mouse by default, when other vendors' right buttons work properly out of the box on Mac OS?
"I have no need for a forward delete -- you just have to get used to clicking ahead, not behind."
Just like you have no need for an 'a' key -- you just have to get used to typing alt + 97
Yes, I agree with you. All laptops need every button, including a button delete forty-two characters exactly, along with a million others to serve functions that an extra click could have done. Now THAT is function!
"including a button delete forty-two characters exactly"
And here it is, yet another strawman from the apologist camp: The thoroughly played-out "slippery slope" argument.
But they couldn't even field that lame argument correctly. We're talking about a standard key that ALREADY exists on 95 percent of computers sold, but Apple has seen fit to omit and force all of its users to work around.
Can't even say "nice try" to your retort, because, well, it was lame.
It didn't exist before MS, but Apple did...
@Information Central
::applause::
I haven't seen so many Apple users get their balls handed to them like this since the iPhone price dropped by $100.
@Information Central
You are my hero.
@ Information Hero
who really forwards deletes? the only time i use the delete key is for one word... and that's not a really good forward delete implementation... if I really need to 'forward delete' i just select it all and then delete.
and it's not an apologist statement... we just don't need two keys that do all the functions one key already does.
the delete key deletes... that simple... even if you want to delete a file... delete key is your go-to on the apple... no need to avoid the backspace... it's all rolled into one. delete, deletes... funny PC users need two keys to differentiate... that i would find to be insulting to my intelligence.
but if you really that intellectually limited... that's probably why you're still using PC anyway... you win some, you lose some... today doesn't seem to be your day.
I'm a mac user typing this comment on a macbook and I agree Apple really f***ed up not having a real delete key. Having to hold fn down is a pain.
@Fozzy Bear
I'm with you to the end, my fozzy fozzy friend.
@ fozzy bear
just because YOU dont personally use the delete key doesnt mean no one else does.
And of course, you go and insert the obligatory insult to pcs users for using a functionality that apple has removed but other people have used for ages. Cut and paste, three usb ports, delete keys. The delete key missing may be a small issue, but just because someone uses something that was there since the age of the 286 computer doesnt make them stupid.
@metal
Macs CAN Cut & Paste,
My MacBook Pro DOES have 3 USB ports
APPLE INVENTED THE FIRST PC WITH MOUSE AND KEYBOARD!!!!!!!!!!
(yes, it included both delete keys)
Beat that!
@ who
mac air only has one usb port.
Iphone doesnt have cut and paste.
and apple also invented computers without harddrives. If it wasnt for the personal pc/ dos side of the house we'd probably be using computers with no harddrives and a bunch of stupid megadrivers and zip disks.
@ metal
MacBook Air is one computer. If I found a PC with only one USB outlet, would that really prove anything?
Cut and paste can be added, they just haven't made it a high priority. Personally I haven't needed this feature, but I'm sure it will come out eventually for those who do want it. (BTW, I thought we were talking about personal computers, if we are crossing into portables, well, lets not even get into *cough* ZUNE SUCKS *cough* that stuff!)
As for HD's, maybe that's what would have happened, maybe it isn't. There's no way to prove anything.
It is quite possible that Apple would have skipped over the battery draining hard drive in favor of flash, therefore skipping a piece of underperforming technology, but again, no way to prove anything.
@ who
we're talking about functionality that apple has excluded from its products that up until now have been pretty standard. Before the ipod became popular all portable media players used to come with A/C adapters. Now almost none of them did. You know, sometimes I just want to go on travel and have some music with me without having to bring a laptop along or sometimes I want to charge something overnight without leaving my monster pc on sucking up the juice all night.
Having one USB port is not okay for a device that costs 3 times as much as your average laptop. Would you pay 60 grand for a car with one door just because its smaller and you could squeeze by with it? I know I wouldnt.
How can you NOT make cut and paste a priority? You create something that you claim to be the best smartphone in the world and then you leave out cut and paste? Cut and paste has been around since the age of the monochrome palm pilot. If you want to quote an article in an email to a friend, what do you do? link the item and just give a vague description of where to read? Thats real superior technology....
Of course the obligatory zune sucks argument. How about some 1st person experience with the zune that lasted more than10 minutes? Or are you just quoting a bunch of other people who also own only apple products?
Calling the hard drive an underperforming technology is short sighted at best. At the price/storage ratio, using flash instead of HD would have massively increased the price of PCs. We'd still be in the hey day of laptops averaging 2 grand apiece if this were the case. And of course, for probably 1/3 of the storage capacity.
@ metal
Again with the prophetic statements and targeting weak spots. I am not advocating for the MacBook Air, it is, in my opinion, like the Apple TV, gold plated laptops and Zune, a screw up that every company must endure.
However, as you seem adamant upon pursuing the topic I will say only this: It was not meant to be used as a single computer. The shared wireless drive is a testament to that fact. It is more or less an accessory for the wealthy ones that have a powerhouse desktop computer at home and have the cash to burn on a superportable that needs another computer to make it whole.
As for your continuous use of the 'would haves,' I can only reiterate, maybe it would have played out that way, maybe it wouldn't. It is possible that if the hard drive had never existed flash drives would have been cheaper, you just never know.
well... here's the point...
MS dreams of having the balls Apple has to do things like... ::gasp:: remove a repetitive key when fn+delete does the same thing for the extremely rare times selecting text just won't do.
For being a niche marketer and creating a computer for a niche market... shocking. Most Air users don't need more than 1 USB port... if they do, they Air may not be for them... or they'll get a hub.
And yes, it is and should be common place for PC users to be reminded of their defensiveness regarding their own lack confidence in their products. Apple users typically find high satisfaction because the products effectively meet their needs... two delete keys is usually not something people would consider 'value-added'.
However, removing it to create a compact workspace with style and form would be. People pay for nice things like that... but if an additional delete key is a true must-have... Apple is not for you, and satisfied Apple customers won't cry over you either.
@ Fozzy Bear
Cheers, I'm with you. 100%
@Fozzy Bear
Im sorry but the last time i checked MS doesnt make computers. Apple makes decisions for both their Hardware and software.
Also, please tell us how you think the Zune has failed, other than market share the product itself does exactly what it set out to do so how is that a failure? If anything its just late to the game.
hmm now this is tempting vs the wind...since this has draft n and the 6 cell is already here!
now..do i want to cancel my 6 cell wind preorder bah
Mwave has them in stock as of now (5:35PM EST, 7/19/08) for $559.00 + 12.49 for ground UPS to the Right Coast:
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA25232
Asus is missing the whole point of a category they invented themselves. This thing is huge and has a crappy screen.
It also costs a couple hundred more than it should.
and it sucks.
I agree - I don't understand spending this kind of money on a "sub-notebook" While this does have much more processing power, for the price it's nearing much closer to the prices of economy notebooks.
At $549 it's not bad, but whatever happened to the their original intention of a cheap, very portable notebook with a decent screen size (7"-9").
Asus keeps releasing more and more models I'm completely confused as to what is the best "NetBooK" out there.
The Dell's new E laptop is really appealing with it's very low starting price. Can't wait until that comes out.
and its ugly Asus went completely the wrong way, they started something but its now gone the way of MSI Wind and Inspiron E
10" is huge?
@Pizzicato,
The problem with Eee 1000 is: it's too big to be a UMPC, and it's too slow to be a notebook. So it basically fails either way.
And who the hell wants to see big pixels on their screen?
This reminds me of an Agatha Christie story about her famous Belgian detective:
Hercule Poirot: Belgian miniatures are the best in the world.
Captain Hastings: Really? What makes them the best?
HP: Because they are the largest!
Wow, nice job Asus. With the 6 cell battery, this is now actually a better deal than the MSI Wind.
And go buy the Asus Eee 4G if you think this thing is "huge!"!
lookin good :)
Where the fuck is the linux version?
Don't you mean, "what the fsck"?
At home on the mantle-piece, along with your manners.
TO Joshua
the reason they keep making it bigger is because there's actually a martket for it..
remember when it first released people complains about the screen being too small?
and when they improve the screen on the 900/901,
now people complains that the keyboards are too small~
that's why they come up with the 1000, bigger keyboard with bigger screen,
its because all the complaining so they're making these improvements
so stop saying that they're missing the point blah blah blah..~
to me the 1000 is still very much portable compare to the Economy notebook that you're talking about...
Now let's complain about the price. What if they made it cheaper? =D
I'm pissed. I want to buy an EEEpc but it seems like almost every month Asus comes out with a new model. I just want a small linux travel laptop. Hmm Im just going to buy the old 8G as a traveler. I dont need any of the new fancy stuff with this 10" display and a hard drive and a atom processor and windows! all unnecessary crap!
oops! I mean 4G. :O
I want this one but with Linux (not the one that has a 40g hard drive). Why does the Linux version has less HD space and is more expensive?
@Brian:
So get the one that suits you best? I thought that was the whole point of this having-more-than-one-version thing.
14" is perfect IMO
small enough to carry around, set on your lap.
big enough to easily type and work on.
Dude. If you had just left out the words "type" and "and," you would have set that up for a perfect "That's what she said" remark.
That's what she said.
I gave up with the EEE names after the 901.
why such shitty battery life. my hp with xp will get that same time with a 15 inch screen and descrite graphics
Cool. Another Apple topic. You idiots don't even need help from Engadget anymore, do you?
does this have a "spinny" hard drive
That is still a ripoff considering other 550$ computers are full-blown machines with an optical drive, real hard drive, and real power... whatever happened to the concept of the original eeepc? CHEAP, and small? Anything over 300$ is too much to me. The original eeepc was supposed to be released for 199$... whatever happened to trying to keep that price point?
The Asus EeePC line seems overpriced, and has poor build quality and cheap looking design.
MSI own the market now, the Wind is the best value, quality construction and unlike most other makes has built-in Bluetooth. I have an Advert 4211 (MSI Wind 10" rebadge) and can't fault it.
I note that this model does have Bluetooth, however it seems to have less venting than the MSI Wind and at 1.45Kg is heavier than the 1.3Kg Wind, however that maybe due to the 6 cell battery.
These things are light in the first place so who cares if it's a tiny bit heavier than the Wind? Anyways, one of the biggest complaints for the netbooks is their 3-cell (crappy) battery life, so I'd say the Eee 1000 is a pretty good choice for them.
The MSI wind is MIA. Good luck trying to order one.
The 1000h was too much before the price drop but $550 is just right for what it has to offer.
and no I don't want a 14" laptop for "just a few dollars more"
Too damn big.
My MacBook Pro has a Delete key. What Mac keyboard doesn't have a Delete key?
we all have delete keys... they really mean to ask why we don't have a key labelled backspace...
because delete does that function too... but just like PC from the Apple commercial, they're not really good at thinking outside the box they're in. =)
wait fozzy, let me get this straight. You're accusing people of not thinking outside of the box by quoting a commericial?
I have to try this again since its just too easy.
Look at me! I'm thinking outside the box by purchasing a product mass produced in China by a multinational, hundred million dollar publicly traded corporation!
All this thinking outside of the box is really good for my synergizing in a totally different paradigm!
@ metal
Look who's talking, or rather don't. Look at your computer, because this is valuable 'up time,' as MS fans call it (time before the computer crashes). Have fun!
My Mac crashes approximately 1 time for every apocalypse (so not quite yet).

@who
Pinky up?
I'd post a more relevant comment, but I'd rather sit here feeling quietly superior than have commercials and crappy reasons for buying a mac thrown at me.
@ who.
I've seen one blue screen in the past 5 years. If you didnt spend all your time looking at porn and downloading warez about how hot wifey is maybe you wouldnt have this problem.
But then again maybe I just take better care of my hardware instead of expecting it to run perfectly after abusing it everyday.
@ metal
Either your hardware is broken or you are, because apparently you can't quite type a question mark at the end of my name. So which is messed up, you, or your second-rate craptop?
so you've finally reached the bottom of the barrel of comebacks and you have to attack my ability to type question marks? Thats just pathetic. Why dont you go home and cry to your mommy about how the bad man on the internet hurt your feelings. And while you're at it maybe you can have her teach you a little something on basic arguing skills.
Wow. So you've already boiled down to not giving a damn about grammar and attacking me through my family. Nice.
@ metal
I didn't quote a commercial... I referenced a character used to illustrate a dichotomy. You proved my point perfectly by acting just like that character.
And about the 1 blue screen of death... you know you're a liar and fool if you think we believe that line you're feeding us.
finally... mass-produced in china... look around you, most of the things in your life probably have the word 'china' on it - for better or worse - it doesn't imply crap, it just means you're a sucker if you think that logic applies exclusively to Apple owners (refer back to the first paragraph if you're confused about the point).
now to enlighten PC owners, I'll put it this way...
PC is the just okay looking chick everyone's had a night with and
Apple is the gorgeous classy gal everyone hopes to get a date with but few rarely get the nod.
Ultimately, someone gets to take her home... and for those of us that do, we're smart enough to know a good thing when we see it.
So, no, we don't need the commercials, but we love them anyway because it appeals to our sense of humor. You can't blame a PC for not having a sense of humor... unless the blue screen of death is funny to you.
So yeah Harry Wagstaff, sometimes we come off as snobby... but when you've gotten quite accustomed to class, it's hard to switch back to tired and worn out PC.

Leopard custom installer - runs really nicely on the wind - this unit is nearly identicle - should be fine
I like a large keyboard, big screen, under 3 punds and flash memory.
I'm thinking of the eee pc 1000. What else do you suggest buying that these attributes?
Only expandable screens and keyboards will satisfy the engadget crowd. Small when you want it small and bigger when you need it to be. Few years down the road though.
Weird, so on NewEgg at least, this 1000H model is $550 but the 901 is $600!
They'd better drop the price on that as well.
you sir, are a tool.
you are the definition of an apple fanboy. apple hasn't even released anything or said they'd release anything in competition. as of now the only thing they have that remotely resembles anything in this "netbook" category is the macbook air, and that thing is around $2,000 and has a 13" screen...3inches too big and $1,500 (or more) too expensive.
see people..this is why i and many other people refuse to buy apple products, apple seems to have a freaking cult following behind them.
oops that was supposed to be in response to "Ocean 6 (im not 'clak')"...stupid commenting system
Apple bashers are just as irritating as Apple fanbois. The MBA should be compared to other overpriced executive toys like various Sony and Panasonic laptops.
However, if the MBA is going to be brought up in a thread about the 1000H, then be fair about it. The MBA is lighter, has a significantly larger screen, higher resolution, faster CPU, more memory, metal case, etc. It's $1699 (edu pricing, which anyone can get) with an iPod Touch. Ebay the iPod and you're out ~$1460 for the MBA after rebate.
I still wouldn't buy one myself (1 USB port... no thanks), but I also wouldn't characterize it as $1500 too expensive. If the MBA was $500 cheaper, it'd be a decent deal.
As far as the 1000H goes, $550 isn't actually that bad, but I just can't get excited about a laptop that weighs more than 3 pounds and has only a 10" sub-XGA screen. I had a Sony SRX99 back in 2002 that had a 10.4" XGA screen and weighed 2.7 pounds. So even the 2.6 pounds 6-cell MSI Wind isn't all that special... give it a 1280x768 10" screen for
Seriously, I've noticed that everyone who tries to respond to clak gets his comment moved somewhere else, not below Clak's where it belongs.
Does Clak have some sort of bubble shield?
The EEE 1000H is looking pretty good. Not sure if the price is low enough, but regardless, I'm buying some type of Netbook - among the ocean of them out there - because nothing could beat having such a small, light laptop like this to take with you everywhere you go - especially for college or for use at a bookstore, etc.
I'm pleased to see so many manufacturers focusing some of their energies on making these.
The additional options I wish this 1000H offered:
- Slightly sharper screen resolution (1280x768 maybe)
- Fingerprint reader
- Swiveling, foldable touchscreen
- WWAN (GSM-based and not locked to just one carrier)
- SiRFstar III / Prima or MTK GPS chipset (along with A-GPS support)
- Larger capacity HDD (120-160GB)
- Stereo Mics
That all would bump up the price, but that's what I'd like to see, and a little system with all that would lack for nothing.
Dell is going to redefine quality with their Lattitude E series netbooks in August ... i'm waiting until them.
My opinion: Go back to the 2G/4G version, but replace the SSD with a 20 or 40GB HDD and make it an Atom.
I'd buy one of them (of course, I do realize if I got what I wanted, we'd see even more Eee models). I don't see the need for all these Eee's when they could just offer different options on the original few models and be done with it (and yes, technically these could be options, I know that).
what is wrong with seeing more EEE models?
isn't more option a good thing?
and if you really think about it, you can see these different models simply as options.
its really not that confusing, 700, 900, 901, 1000...(904/905)
the only thing differs from them are the harddrive/screen size....
if you look all the reviews/complaints from engadget..
u'd see a lot of people say "they should just make it blahblhabl, they should just make it this/that..."
and they all say different things................................
different people have different needs, and a different idea of what their ideal netbook is..
So me not having that ? really affected your ability to comprehend my argument? I didnt get that feeling from the way you responded to my comment without missing a beat. Also, question marks are not grammar, they are punctuation.
And I fail to see how calling you a cry baby is an attack on your mom. Of course, I'm sure in your infinite wisdom it should have been strikingly obvious how this was an attack on your family.
I ordered one from excaliberpc.com on last thursday for $650. I received it today and happened to catch this so I call them up and they happily credited me back that benny.
Price back up to $649 as of 8/1 at 12am
