DigiTimes is reporting (without citing a source) that ASUS expects to deliver "whole-day" battery options to its
Eee PC range of netbooks. In addition, ASUS also plans to offer some level of Internet storage, apparently beyond the 20GB they already offer to new Eee PC 901 and 1000 owners -- a move that we hope will become a trend amongst netbook providers in order to offset the miniscule flash drives found inside the lowest of the low-cost, mini laptops. Both changes are expected before the year is up. Incredibly, ASUS also plans to push out new software and hardware upgrades every month to "fill gaps in the netbook market." Funny, we didn't think any gaps remained in this
over-saturated niche.
This eee PC news is getting real old, fast.
I prefer EEE news over "iPHONE unlocking video that tells nothing has just been released!"
I'd prefer a whole-day battery for the Gigabyte M912 though, I think that the extra 100$ for a touchscreen (And the pivot that makes it actually usable, unlike the hacked EEEs) and Expresscard are worth of it.
I have to give Asus props for putting a six cell battery in the eee 901. I just bought a 6 cell battery for my q1 ultra and it cost me $100.
there's a fix for that. don't read it.

You mean in comparison to all the Apple news that is predominently featured?
The push of upgrades, presumably for the Linux suites, is good. Meantime I still try and understand why the 1000H is cheaper than the unavailable 901 Linux.
Since SSDs are pretty expensive, Upgrading MacBook Air to SSD costs what, 2 EEE Pcs?
avester is correct, why the low rank?
Still waiting for the Engadget Eee site...
Still waiting for an Engadget iPhone site.
still waiting for Eeengadget site
And they will do so by bringing the weight to a reasonable 7 pounds.
I think we all need to realize that "Eee" just means "Asus" now, too. Everyone is getting in a huff (myself included), but really at this point, Eee has replaced Asus as the company's branding.
Defying the laws of physics is pretty hard, even from Asus.
A battery that would slide to the bottom in addition to the regular battery would be way more usable, since you can take it out when you don't need it without rebooting the machine, ect.
It seems to me, that in the UK at least, that isn't a bad thing. Asus didn't have a particularly bad rep, but it isn't the best over here either.
i need an eee new that says eee pc 901 cost 299$
Whole Day? I doubt it, even the smallest of portables don't last ALL day, not even* 12 hours (few exceptions). Is this a clever ploy to get some more hype directed at the Eee line? I hope no actually, bc this brand is losing steam fast.
Asus: how about you go back to your nice 7 or 9 inch portable and keep working to make it better instead of keep increasing the LCD size hoping we would be swayed like some naiive sheep (although some are actually dumb enough to be buying the upcoming 10 inch which for the same price, you can get a REAL computer a few inches bigger, that can do much more)? See the idea is : ultra portable, UMPC, not Increase size until money is milked out of every oraface.
Asus: please wake up. I still like your Mobo's though :)
People complained about the 701s screen/bezel and keyboard so they made the 900.
Atom came along so they made a 901 and improved the 900 by giving it BT and wireless N amongst other improvements.
People would ask what's the point in going back to improving the 7" with bezel when they've got the 9" in the same form factor - getting rid of the bezel means shrinking the case giving an even smaller keyboard causing more complaints.
They come out with the 10" to satisfy those complaining about the keyboard and at the same time improve even more.
Then there's the 904 which gives a cheaper option for the bigger keyboard problem.
There's me thinking they were making it better. They've increased the screen size past the "nice 7 or 9 inch portable" by 1 inch and you're complaining?
To me it looks exactly like what they're saying, filling in the gaps:
Some people want the smallest of everything/cheapest - 701
Some people want a bit more - 900/1
Some people want a bit more still - 1000
Some people want a bit more but with a bigger keyboard without spending more going for the top model - 904
And i'm dumb enough to get the 10 inch. So what if you can get a full size laptop for the same price, it's exactly that, a FULL laptop, so it's big and cluncky. Don't see many 10 inch full specced laptops for the 1000/H price. The 1000H is only £20 more than the 901 so you must be pretty dumb if you think the 9" is nice when for £20 more "you can get a REAL computer a few inches (plus another inch) bigger, that can do much more"
I completely agree. I am sick and tired of hearing all these Engadget readers (and editors) complaining about how Asus has a lot of Eee models, how they're moving away from 7" laptops with large bezels, or how they use the Eee brand for several products now. Those are THE most idiotic complaints I have ever heard. What is wrong with choice? What is wrong with their branding? You can still buy the 7" if you want, but why buy it if you can get a 9" laptop in the same dimensions? Don't you have something worthwhile to complain about? What started as a few complaints has turned into a firestorm of Engadget "me-too"ism that is only rivalled by Digg and 4chan. Bunch of sheep.
Ugh, how could you possibly like ASUS motherboards? The one I have refuses to boot from any CD except Windows XP and even then it needs a special driver before the installer can see the hard drives / the CD drive it's running from. So pathetic. Not too mention that 50% of ASUS parts fail within a year
Whole day? I find that hard to believe, since mine barely gets an hour at most
Hopefully these batteries will come out sooner rather than later and will cost less than $100...
Yes, this price is REALLY low, but at the same time, if it costs more than that, I might as well wait for Dell to release their version of Netbooks come Spring next year and have better screen size, battery life, newer computer, ETC!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Can we pleeeease get a model with a bigger keyboard? It's a living hell to type anything longer than "Hello world" on the current model.
That's called the EEEPc "1000".
I thought the 1000 was the bigger keyboard model.
if they offer a higher capacity battery for my 701 (like they've been promising to since i bought it), i'll be a happy boy. i'll believe it when i see it though.
Engadget should stop complaining, its Asus's choice to make different varients of the EEE PC. People wanted big screens small screens, big keyboards, small keyboards, mobility, 3G, Atom CPUs, Hard drive options, SSD options, WiMax editions etc. Don't complain, there are millions of people worldwide that have different preferences and have different needs.
For myself, frankly, I'm waiting for Asus to make a tablet Eee PC. It has to be 10" and complete with capacitive multi-touch screen and dual atom processor.
I agree. Engadget has really lost the plot, what with all the ASUS criticisms and all the stupid iPhone updates/minor announcements.
I for one, am very interested in a long battery for the EEE series - is it too hard to presume that 'whole day' equates to a working day ? I would love it if there is an 8 hour battery for the EEE
I think "whole day" is mean the "work time".
24 - 8(sleep) -2(eat) -2(traffic) = 12
12 hours is the "whole day" mean.
Damn you Asus, I WANT MORE BEZEL!
I hate all these glossy finish laptops! Bling, bling, bling.
At least leave some in matt!
