Well, finally. iPhone firmware 2.0.1 has just been released by Apple, and we're hoping it solves the
myriad problems introduced by 2.0: crashing apps, interminable keyboard delays, choppy scrolling -- you know what we're
talking about. We're pulling down the 250MB file now, we'll let you know how things turn out -- won't you do the same?
Update: Well, it took its sweet time to install, but things seem a little tighter and snappier all around. We'll give it a day or so of actual usage before we pronounce things A-OK, though -- how's it going for you?

One thing I can confirm they didn't fix is the insanely long backup times. Looks like it is going to take about 30 minutes for me, which is what it took before the update.
Chuckles McGee @ Aug 4th 2008 7:46PM
Awww...iPhone FIRMWARE 2.0.1 available through iTunes...I thought the iPhone was available through iTunes...
admactanium @ Aug 4th 2008 7:54PM
Actually the Sync times are much faster. The initial backup after the update is actually updating the Firmware update. Subsequent syncs are much faster. My second sync was 15 seconds and it skipped the backing up process altogether.
Steffen Jobbs @ Aug 4th 2008 7:56PM
Not sure what 2.0.1 is supposed to correct. Relative to all the other handsets on the market, the iPhone is already perfect. Is there a step beyond perfection? Apple loves me. Hollywood air kisses to all the amazing Apple programmers. 2.0.1 today, 2.0.2 next week. Now that's what's called progression of perfection.
I don't know why my WinMo using avatar is getting upset just because I think the iPhone is so great and is in such high demand. That's the problem with lower primates due to a few minor genetic differences. Chimps become insanely jealous and aggressive when they think someone else is getting all the best bananas.
Raheem @ Aug 4th 2008 8:11PM
Uh Steffen... I take it you don't own an iPhone then? Else you'd know we've been suffering major slowdown, crashing apps and terminal iRage.
Jon2309 @ Aug 4th 2008 8:22PM
Wow, I laughed at Steffan.
Wait, he's serious?
tuckers @ Aug 4th 2008 8:34PM
Well, I had to do a full restore on the gen 1 phone last week, as it kept getting buggier and buggier. Deleted my outlook calendar completely, stopped sycing, started draining the battery in a couple of hours, yadayadayada. I hope this is better.
iPhoner @ Aug 4th 2008 8:45PM
Don't update if you have a Jailbroken or Unlocked iPhone

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enough exclamation points? well, it's worth it.
ethan @ Aug 4th 2008 11:33PM
at least this update of iTunes and my iPhone didn't kill my illegal stock of ringtones! mu ha haa!
Jamma @ Aug 5th 2008 4:04AM
Good news-it's actually free for iPod Touch owners!!!!!
Andy TGD @ Aug 5th 2008 5:31AM
Well it had better fix some of my problems with the 2.0 firmware - I don't appreciate being used by Apple as a paying beta-tester. :-(
Johnny @ Aug 5th 2008 4:33PM
I guess, by reading everyone's comments that me, and Steffan up there are the only people in the WORLD that are not having problems with the new iPhone.
I got the iPhone 3G on launch day and have had 0 problems.
The same cannot be said for 100% of the people I know who also have one!!!
Timerider @ Aug 6th 2008 3:44PM
Is there a direct download link? I can't download this over dialup. It's bigger than 2.0.
jimbo @ Aug 4th 2008 7:23PM
250mb for bug fixes.... wtf
Scorch07 @ Aug 4th 2008 7:32PM
With firmware it has to be the whole thing. That's the entire firmware for the phone, not just the bug fixes.
eahulse @ Aug 4th 2008 7:37PM
The iPhone launched July 11th. This is still within the 30 days. Get it?
fred @ Aug 4th 2008 7:56PM
1 whole week?
Ok. Whatever.
Seth @ Aug 4th 2008 9:19PM
So, at the current rate the sizes of the iPhone firmwares have been going, by the time we reach like 4.1.2, the firmware will be up to (at least) 500 mb. Nice one.
CaptCaveman @ Aug 4th 2008 10:17PM
@Fred
iPhone: problems with the 2.0 software. Consumers want an update. The update comes out in 3 weeks.
Instinct: Problems with the firmware. Consumers want an update. The update comes out in 5 weeks.
Both have 30 days to decide if they want the phone or not. Those still not happy with the iPhone still have 1 week to return it.
Those with the instinct that waited for the update are stuck with it for 2 more years.
Let me know if you have any other questions Fred.
jimbo @ Aug 4th 2008 10:42PM
Fred is an idiot, but so is CaptCaveman. If you kept the instinct for 30 days, you didn't even KNOW there was going to be a firmware update, and you were happy enough with it as it is (or just too lazy to return it).
Vink @ Aug 5th 2008 11:42AM
Fred: The iPhone is not proclaiming itself an "iPhone killer". When you are being compaired to a higher standard, you can't fall short of that mark.
drye @ Aug 5th 2008 2:33PM
@Vink
Actually... They are, see the iPhone 3G ad "halway". "The first phone to beat the iPhone..." But none the less I agree in general.
Dash-2 @ Aug 4th 2008 7:24PM
Dang, thought I was the first to send it in ;D
I think I can speak for everyone when I say, YES!
Mike Cerm @ Aug 4th 2008 7:31PM
If you can tell me whether this will lock my jailbroken 2G, THEN you can speak for everyone. Until then, we'll have to wait and see.
JOSE @ Aug 4th 2008 7:25PM
please let the keyboard lag be fixed!
Chris @ Aug 4th 2008 8:31PM
I haven't had any problems except for the locking and unlocking sound not working every now and then, and I'm using the 2.0 update that was supposed to only go on 3G iphone's.
:p atrick @ Aug 4th 2008 9:39PM
Yeah man, I hear you.
I hate trying to text "Help!" for 10 minutes.
Jellicle @ Aug 5th 2008 3:57AM
My experience so far is that the keyboard lag is gone...!
Skyride @ Aug 4th 2008 7:25PM
OMFG!!!
THEY CHANGED AN ENTIRE 3RD POINT ON THE FIRMWARE VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Difference being?
Please stop posting iPhone topics. I will kill a lolcat everytime you do. (hmm..... i might run out of them on planet earth).
Christopher Grant @ Aug 4th 2008 7:27PM
Yeah, Engadget! Stop posting news on your newsblog. It seriously wastes my time to not read it when I'm not interested.
Limeni @ Aug 4th 2008 7:32PM
Get an iPhone than you won't feel left out.
mark @ Aug 4th 2008 7:32PM
bigger news...
you found the caps-lock key!
king @ Aug 4th 2008 7:35PM
this isn't news, its a bugfix
Derek @ Aug 4th 2008 7:37PM
*sigh*
Engadget already offers non-apple/non-iphone RSS/Pipes feeds. Take a minute to use the nifty search box at the top.
If you don't have an RSS reader, Google Reader is pretty cool.
Skyride @ Aug 4th 2008 7:58PM
Ye, I use FF3 so i have an RSS reader. It just annoys me that (almost literally) 50% of engadget topics are somehow related to the iphone.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Aug 4th 2008 9:47PM
If you knew how bad 2.0 is compared with 1.x, you'd realize what big news this is :)
BAM @ Aug 4th 2008 9:48PM
the news is letting people know the update is available, and giving people an opportunity to discuss their experiences with the patch.
Why do the mac haters even have to comment.?
Seth Porter @ Aug 4th 2008 10:05PM
When over 6 million people use the iphone, this is pretty big news.
GiF @ Aug 4th 2008 10:28PM
I agree. Engadget seems to be obsessed with the iPhone.
When the iPod classic firmware update arrived Engadget didn't tell us about it!
Judd @ Aug 4th 2008 11:17PM
O..M...F...G....
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE iPHONE THE STOP F***ING CLICKING THE DAMN ARTICLES AND READING THEM YOU STOOPID TOOL!
Nobody cares how much you hate iPhone articles. No one values or listens to your opinion and we (the collective iPhone interested community) wish you would go and jump off of a cliff and land in a massive pit filled with Sidekicks and maybe that would be more your speed.
*places a yellow blanket over his head* Leave the iPhone alone! All you people care about is more more more more more! Don't you understand the iPhone's had a really hard time with it's crashed activation servers and it's laggy firmware and people jailbreaking it all the time! LEAVE IT ALONE! I MEAN IT! Leave the iPhone alone or you'll have to deal with ME! (end blatant impersonation).
Why do you stupid trolls click on the articles if you're just going to say how dumb it is? Honestly, do you just have nothing better to do?
Abuzar Baloach @ Aug 4th 2008 11:43PM
Chris Grant, what's with this Joystiq crossover? lol
Michael Reilly @ Aug 5th 2008 12:45AM
@Judd
It's astonishing after reading that someone is tired of iPhone articles to realize that they clicked on one, read it (sometimes) and then took their precious time to COMMENT about what a waste of time it all is. What a disconnect!
And if the iPhone isn't a gadget, then I don't know what is. How could Engadget fail to report al news about it? Wasn't it Time Magazine's gadget of the year or some such?
I didn't totally follow your blanketed rant paragraph, but I was moved nonetheless.
Michael Reilly @ Aug 5th 2008 12:55AM
@Judd
Re-reading my reply, it may seem like I was accusing you. To be clear, I was agreeing with you in a "Yeah what you said," repetitive kind of way. :)
Judd @ Aug 5th 2008 1:03AM
@Michael
Had a long day or something? My rant was pretty simple. People who click on iPhone articles and bitch about them are tools. And yeah, kinda did sound like you were accuse-agreeing in a very odd way. But good to have you on the bandwagon. If you didn't understand the "blanketed rant", go Youtube "Leave Britney Alone" and you will be enlightened.
Michael Reilly @ Aug 5th 2008 1:08AM
@JUDD
LOL... How perceptive of you! It is past my bedtime. But thank you for helping me get the leave her alone reference. I can't believe I missed that. No further posts from me until I have slept. In the morning, my iPhone should have finished its last interminable backup.
noi$ia @ Aug 4th 2008 7:26PM
allready downloaded it, right now its doing the backup, which probably still takes about 20mins or more.
anyone got a list of the bugfixes and maybe features that were added?
Zombie Flanders @ Aug 4th 2008 7:37PM
20 minutes...if you're lucky. Mine's taken over an hour to backup. It's so lame! I seriously hope that's a 'bug' that gets fixed although I'm sure it's not and it won't.
