PSP-3000 screen head-to-head with the PSP-2000: oh, that's what improved means
Looks like Sony wasn't foolin' when it said that the new PSP-3000 has a noticeably improved screen from the PSP-2000 -- check out this comparison shot of the new rig vs. the old. Man, our first-gen unit is starting to look like a real clunker -- anyone else feeling the need to upgrade?

Rank me up if you don't own a PSP.
Or rank you down for not being clever enough to deserve a naturally-aspirated high ranking....
waiownsyou, why so not cool?
i +1'd you so i can cut under you. =)
my question is, where is nintendo in all this? the ds graphics suck and the unit feels cheap. even with these small updates im starting to believe sony when they say the psp still has a good 4 years. the ds on the other hand felt old the day it came out. i'd like to add that
1 i hate the ps3 and love the wii so im not hating on nintendo only.
2 i owned a ds for a couple years but none of the games last longer than a few hours.
btw what ever happened to the xbox handheld microsoft said would be out half way through the xbox's life.
v3xx
...the nintendo DS is getting old yes, but it doesn't feels cheap, and hell that touchscreen? opens a whole world of possibilities....i dont see that in PSP...
and yes i have played with 2 PSP...and i must tell you... the PSP-Slim or what the hell that is...Feels like china stuff...i was afraid of breaking it when i played in it
V3XX,
The DS is selling. It is selling so well, it sold more units last month than PS3 and PSP combined (and I'm a PS3 fan.) That's why Nintendo isn't changing anything. They don't have to. The numbers speak for themselves:
NPD’s Top Hardware Sales in July, 2008
Nintendo DS – 608,400
Nintendo Wii – 555,000
Sony PlayStation 3 – 224,900
Sony PlayStation Portable – 221,700
Microsoft XBox 360 – 204,800
Sony PlayStation 2 – 155,500
@v3xx
"i owned a ds for a couple years but none of the games last longer than a few hours"
So buy longer games, fucknuts.
Contrast yay!
Err, I can't tell any other differences?
You can tell that there is less reflection/glare. There is supposed to be a 50% reduction in response time which should eliminate/drastically reduce ghosting, but that is only noticeable in a video demonstration.
Hmm... I am confused as to which is the new one.
"new rig vs. the old" means the top is new but in the comments Michael says "there is less reflection/glare" and the top PSP is all glare.
Which is the better (new) one?
its the one that doesn't look like shit, stupid
The lower one looks considerably better... but the upper one looks to have additional glare coming off that directional pad which makes me think either the entire thing got some sort of reflective upgrade or there's a bit of shadow casting shenanigans (though I'm sure not much...as that lower screen does look delicious. The strawberries, I mean).
@FreeRange
mmmm.. Strawberries.... =P
So, is the lower part of the table also a higher version than the upper part? Because, I can see a shadow reflection on the top part and not at the bottom.
You idiots! Who the helle would want a second analog stick! ITS A HANDHELD, ISN'T IT!?
This is sort of sucky that they released the PSP 3000 .. it means tehre is no PSP2 coming for at least a year .. maybe even 2 to 3 years.
And this is bad why? PSP is still a good peice of kit, its just cheaper and nicer looking now.
Yeah perfecting stuff is such a bad thing ...
"Perfecting" would be a second analog stick.
Also note that when Sony releases PSP2 it would most likely have major differences such as Blueray, wimax (Maybe) or Wfi n-draft, OLED display among other stuff, but till now it is just an upgrade thats why it is just PSP-3000
Wow, and to think I almost bought a PSP last weekend...
Portable porn just got better
I'm thinking of upgrading from my first-gen to a PSP-3000. It's a good thing I didn't get the PSP-2000
I was just thinking the same thing, Pete.
yea me as well. i was going to buy a 2000 unit sometime this summer, but then i realized there were not really any games i was playing on it now at the moment. so i figured i'd wait til something new came out. glad i waited now cause that screen looks awesome.
@SoCoolCurt
I hope that means that you've played the hell out of God of War, Jeanne d'Arc and Patapon because otherwise, what are you doing wasting your time commenting here? Come on man, those games aren't gonna play themselves.
Anyone with a 2000 might as well wait for an aftermarket 3000 replacement screen and spend the $40-50 for an upgrade.
i would have liked to have seen new features, instead of improved features
Looks like there is more light reflecting off the top one too... Not that it would make THAT much difference but it's just something to consider.
Well, I said I'd believe it when I see it and now I *see* it.
Since my last one broke (ZzZzZz..) I may have to pick this baby up. I kind of miss playing GTA and Wipeout on the go!
I just gave away my first gen PSP. Probably used it a grand total of 20 times. Nice looking screen there though. Looking forward to the PSP 2 with solid state games and a touch screen.
I resorted to buying a PSP for a trans-atlantic flight, because there were no DSs for sale anywhere. I think I enjoyed one game (Loco Roco) and all the other ones were boring. Haven't used it since.
@ confuzatron
You arrogant punk.
Solid-state... that is EXACTLY what they need. The use of UMDs is most of why I don't own a PSP. Moving parts = battery drain. This is why you rip DVDs to your laptop before a long flight instead of playing the discs.
"anyone else feel the need to upgrade?"
ummm..........that would be a no.
I like my 1st gen PSP. The gadget geek in me wanted the 2000 model, but the practical side held off. Now with the screen being better and the 2000 enhancements, it's kind of tough to not want to upgrade.
However, I know my luck, and if/when I do by the 3000 model, they'll announce the PSP2. So I'm a bit gun-shy... Thought the sharper screen and better response time is tempting.
I'm not upgrading till I know about the hackability of this new version. Screen seems to be very tempting though.
so true i remember sony saying some thing about fighting psp piracy i hope this is not what they ment if this psp is relay unhackable then im happy to get a psp 2000 because i cant wait longer i miss my locationfree from my first gen psp until it got robed in school :-(
Your screen name is so fucking cool!
That is the real question. If Sony changed the hardware in a vain attempt to temporarily protect it, that would be quite stupid. Unfortunately, this is Sony so stupidity has been part of their business model for quite some time.
There is nothing truly unhackable once the hardware is in "unfriendly" hands. That is largely irrelevant though. Don't get me wrong, I got a stiffy just looking at the differences between the two and the 3000 looks a LOT better.
It's just that I have all of my PSP games in protected storage and I won't ever go back to using the UMD. It takes too much energy and is not as easy to use as a hacked PSP with 8 gig memory sticks. So why would I spend another 300$ to buy the new model which takes away functionality? I probably won't
Ohh, and I was serious. I have about 300 PSP games downloaded off Bittorrent, but I actually OWN all of the titles that I played through and enjoyed. There will be a large number of people that are not motivated by piracy to stay with the 2000.
Your username is pretty tits, man.
The new TA-88 boards are Pandora-proofed. I wouldn't expect them to stay that way though.
I'm so happy with my first-gen, hacked PSP, I doubt I'd even look at another unless it was hackable. Wake me up when this one's pandora's box opens up.
Exactly why I'm still totally fine with my PSP-1000. I happen to like my homebrew and I know I won't be able to do that homebrew right away with the 3000. I rarely use my PSP in situations where I would get glare like that anyway, so it's not a big issue with me.
That said...the 3000 IS rather pretty with its lack of glare.
I have a 1000 and its true. I have bought plenty of games. But sometimes I need to unwind with a couple hundred games of Tetris or Bomberman. Then drop into mario rpg. Its just too damn nice to risk going with something else. But glare is my only complaint with the PSP, and this seems to fit the bill.
It almost wants me to go buy some strawberries *puts hand back in animal crackers bag*
tempted to get one of these for the skype and ps3 compatible features and keep my old PSP-1000 for homebrew
Well, I have had a PSP since the first weekend after it came out when I was on the 4th shipment list but a call came in saying I had one because there were extras from the second shipment. Now I believe it is time to upgrade to the newer version as well as upgrade from the 32 mb memory stick that I got with my first one.
Damn! Those strawberries look yummy! =D
I've got my first gen psp-1001, but I'll feel the need to upgrade if cellphones are ever deemed inhumane and illegal, prompting skype usage, or if I get a PS3. The former will probably come before the latter *budum tsh*.
Without a 2nd analog it's nonsense, 2nd analog is must...
As soon as it's hacked, count me in for an upgrade. I've been dying for a worthwhile upgrade from my PSP-1000.
Is the screen replaceable? What's the possibility of putting the new screen on the old PSP?
i was thinkin the exact same thing. if its not hackable software-wise...hack the screen out of a psp-2000 and ur done.
At first glance it looks like it might be...however, it looks like the speaker placement (I'm assuming that's what those little holes near the bottom of the 1000-2000 series are?) in the 3000 is different, so perhaps not. There's that new microphone too which may create a different shell configuration for the cover.
it will cost (at least $100) almost as much as a new PSP, and I doubt the mic is installable.
The PSP is a great device that could have been "Uber Great" if Sony had opened the thing up.
thats true about every device that isn't open, including toasters. linux toaster FTW!!!!11!! 133t
but really, how bad ass would the ps3 be if it was open, even just full secondary os hardware access would be an improvement. ohh and if you could upgrade the 360 with a standard HD, 320 gig 360 anyone? how about a hardrive for the wii, so you could get down with every VC game you wanted.
God bless the VC and may he spite those who limit hard drive space and require the swapping of titles from thy sd card of misfortune. blessed it white console but beware the evils of slot availibility. May he reign hot acid upon the heads of those who deny the glory of third party storage developement and grant happiness for the bringers of the twilight hack. Amen.
Does this mean no more stuck/dead pixels?
My 1st gen had to replaced 5x before I got one with a no stuck pixels.
Recently purchased the silver psp and again it had a nasty stuck pixel which is very annoying. Returned for refund.
And what surprises will you bring us now Sony?
Better luck next time?
I had the same problem with mine- replaced it 3 times, though.
IS the broken video out fixed yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpWJnFHmKzQ
Not I. I have the original and the 2000. I'm done buying PSPs for a long time. However, this picture doesn't give me a lot of confidence. As you can tell, the upper unit is more exposed to the light, so even the body doesn't look as dark as the bottom one. The latter effect also affects the screen. Also, the PSP has 3-4 settings to adjust the contrast. So, how do I know they didn't pick the lightest one for the top unit, and used the darkest one for the bottom unit.
I'm not saying that there aren't any improvements. I really don't know because I haven't seen it. But, I'm quite aware of deceiving advertisement of features.
Pretty sure these are from a review site/blog... not an advertisement.
review site or not, how do we know money and/or gifts didn't change hands? Show me the slim psp with the new psp, on video or photos in identical conditions. It's so obvious to me that this photo was done to exaggerate strengths of the new unit more obviously, but obviously that's just my subjective reasoning.
I think the new unit is just clearly that much better. And I only think the top one appears to have more light on it because the bottom one has an improved anti-glare feature.
Vidikron,
1) there's a bright patch of light in the top left. That alone is an indication of unfairness and it's very hard for me to believe the photographer didn't notice. It's difficult to tell the shape of the bright part and whether or not it extends to much of the PSP's screen (compared to a plain surface like the table), so it's possible the brightness purposely extends onto much of the screen (it certainly looks it). ie. it's possible the shape of the bright part was shaped (if that makes sense) to let the light fall on the device's screen while pretty much elsewhere it's been shadowed. It all looks too suss and too convenient.
2) the angle of the shot could have been easily chosen to show glare being directed at the lens while the bottom unit enjoyed a different angle to make it look better.
3) the shots of the rear of the unit on that same page conveniently have no bright spots on the table at all. Clouds blocking the sun or convenient arrangement? You decide.
I remain skeptical. In any case I'm sure we'll find out the truth later on. I own a slim and I'm still shaking my head at how bad this pic is making it look. It's very hard to get this sort of shot by chance, and very hard for me to believe the photographer thinks he's doing things fairly. Then again the new screen could be the best thing since sliced bread, but I, for one, am finding things a little too unbelievable here.
While this looks nice, a good screen isn't enough to convince me. I was planning on getting a PSP for homebrew until I heard about Pandora, so now if I get a PSP it'll be for commercial games. The question is, what commercial games are worth getting?
(I'm not a troll trying to say the PSP sucks; I've really done no research whatsoever, and have no clue what games there are except for Lumines, Metal Gear Acid/Acid 2/Portable Ops, and GTA:LCS).
http://www.metacritic.com/games/psp/scores/
Just check out the stuff that's 80 or above, and you'll usually do okay.
Ok 1st... bad photo... shoot that pic again without reflective light... is it boasting a less reflective screen? or is it boasting better color?
2nd.... Are games developed to support color better than the current screen?
3rd.... These PSP's are easily hacked... is this actually an effort to close the piracy loopholes that have PSP developers cringing...
What? You mean that it doesn't have a Mempry Stick slot? Internal memory?
If Nintendo don't raise Sony on this the DS will probably fold...
New PSP - August
New iTouch (Gaming platform) - September
New DS - October
Its a pocket war I tell ya.
^
What's " iTouch" ?
iTouch = iPod Touch
1: Yes, the new unit is advertised has having a much improved anti-glare feature.
2: No idea, but every game will benefit from the improved contrast, anti-glare, and faster response time regardless.
3: No idea, but I'm sure they have attempted to close any known security issues. Why wouldn't they do that regardless of the intent of the new unit?
I just want to know if the screen is scratch-proof enough to prevent developing scuffs from taking it in and out of its own official slip case?
If there's anything head-slappingly stupid about the build quality of current PSPs, it's that.
had mine about 2 years, not had any trouble with slipcase scratches
*bites PSP-3000
What the... those aren't real strawberries?
Damn.
Lately I have been using my 1st generation PSP just for the streaming radio. I hook it up to my stereo and away we go. Think I'll hold off on the 3rd gen for now. Other than that i think the PSP is generally geared towards older type gamers like myself. I bought a couple DS's for the kids in the family and I can honestly say I didn't like the feel of it or the dual screen setup. IMO the PSP is easier to play games on and in general just do more stuff with. I'm not a Nintendo hater by an means, I grew up with nintendo and have the WII, but I just prefer the PSP.
yay! time to upgrade
I'll consider it when they ditch that absurd UMD rotating media. With the Playstation store up and running, there's no longer any excuse for those slow, clunky and fragile discs.
Adding a second analog stick would make it upgrade worthy.
OMG . . . . i bought the psp 2001 about a year ago couldnt sony give the ppl with the psp 2001 a discount to buy a psp 3000 . . .
Ohh yer the black surround is much shiner & they've increased the size of the hole where you can put a wrist strap!!!... brilliant...
This is great and all but doesn't Sony still have the full resolution of the PSP locked out for all media except what comes off a UMD and aren't the largest memory sticks only about 8 gigs?
I'm not being sarcastic I'm seriously asking because these two reasons are why I bought a 32gig ipod touch to watch video while I am on the go.
I still love my PSP and use it alot for portable gaming but Sony could have really hit a home run had they opened it up a from the get go and put 16 to 32 gigs of internal memory on board.
No Sony does not have full resolution "locked out" and you can in fact get much bigger memory sticks (which by the way remain to be hot swappable). The PSP supports locationfree and remote play as well. In my opinion, you really shouldn't of gone with the touch.
wanted to add that now a days 4GB are only $20 http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202629242
Nope, controls still suck, still so much larger than my iPod Touch, games are still weak, size is still too big, and UMD movies are non-existent at best. I'd say that releasing a slightly tweaked version of a platform failure isn't very bright...
the PSP has a superabundance of games http://www.metacritic.com/games/psp/alpha/ a ton of great ones http://www.metacritic.com/games/psp/scores/ even a bunch of free ones http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp?cat=Arcade
there are many stores for UMD movies (amazon for example) and you can download movies and games from Sony's store - also of note: http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6587713.html
That does look like the shit, if i may say so myself.
I don't have a PSP but Crisis Core has been making me jones for one terribly. This upgrade in the display is definitely tipping the scales. I'm such a sucker for a pretty picture.
So, how long until I can buy a replacement screen and stick it in my old PSP?
I'm calling shenanigans on this photo. It's obvious the top unit is getting some unfair lighting while the bottom isn't.
REAL PEOPLE HOLDING THE THING OUTDOORS, THANKS.
This comes across as a Sony-funded publicity photo.
I concur.
I call balony on it being that dramatic, i have a psp slim black and it would never put out a picture that terrible unless it had the worst settings and had much more light exposure (you can see the glare is vertaical and really bad on the left and right sides of the actual image) . As we all know with hdtvs, monitors or any type of screens, the settings you choose can make a world of difference (to some point). I'm in for seeing what display settings they EACH used and how much light was being shined on the top one. But this would make one damn fine commercial for strawberries...
Does this new screen draw more battery then the old versions?
"PSP-3000, I tried to touch quickly Name!
It was actually quite easy to do it!"
That was all i needed from the read link
i dont think its a good enough reason to buy another PSP if you have one already.
Agreed, It needs a Hard drive in there, Sony hasn't learnt from the non MP3 codec Walkman days.
Pretty pointless since there aren't any games with decent quality graphics that would need (or could even use) a higher quality screen.
I would've focused on upgrading its performance and gaming power.
Getting purpose built, high quality, 3rd party games as well as releasing the ever illusive Gran Turismo Mobile would be high up on my agenda too.
@ Oinquer
Possibilities??!? You mean the multiple brain age wanna-be games? Or the hundreds of games where the touch screens in not even used at all? As far as I see it it's possibilities is VERY limited to Mario games. the only games I notice the touch screen was used to it's full capacity is Zelda: Hour Glass and March of the Minis.
The only reason why I play my DS more is b/c it has a better design (clamshell) and R4. Also, the DS sells b/c it started at a reasonable price. How much was the PSP when it came out? I forgot, but I knew I didn't buy it until I discovered Craigslist
