Windows Mobile ported to iPhone, we think
Most of the Windows Mobile / iPhone cross-breeding we've seen has either involved elaborate WinMo skinning or terrible iPhone KIRFs, but we suppose it was just a matter of time before Microsoft's mobile OS was made to run on Apple's hardware -- or at least that's what it looks like here. Pretty much everything about this video is suspect, from the shadiness of the MyPhone2008 conference it was shot at to the interviewer's ridiculously inane questions ("You don't have girlfriends in Norway?"), but damn if that isn't WinMo happily booting on what appears to be an iPhone 3G -- we can't tell, but it's a good bet it's jailbroken. The developer, Erik Kristiansen, says that mod is in beta right now but that he's looking at a January release -- we'll see what more we can dig up before then. Video after the break.
Update: As several commenters have pointed out, this has the trappings of a bad viral for the crappy SonicEmotion app also on that page -- all of the other videos are suspiciously fake / ridiculous, and the phone responds oddly to several touches. So much for that, we suppose.

Nooooooooo!!!!!
Why no? It will have copy and paste and the ability to run opera!!! lol
Cool trick! Do Android next!
This is awesome. Dont know how the OS will react to the non-standard resolution, but this gives me a reason to hope.
@rock99
It should be ok. Lots of strange resoutions have popped up lately...Xperia, Touch HD, Treo's, etc.
It is indeed viral.

I though that too, but the Xperia and Touch HD run 800x480, long supported by WinCE/WinMo 6.0, along with the Palms at 320x320. Those resolutions are supported. No WinMo device has ever run at 320x480 to my knowledge, not saying it isnt possible, just interesting.
Check out the other tongue-in-cheek iPhone videos from the same people:

Sweet, at least the iphone will now have an excuse for being a piece of shit... I'm selling my 3G as soon as the Storm arrives...
how is that useful? the iPhone's UI is WAY more intuitive and user-friendly than windows mobile!
Maybe someone wants... copy/paste... Opera Mobile 9.5 with flash.... a PDA-style OS....
some people might not think the same as you.
some people may like winMo more than the iPhone OS. It's their decision.
Not to mention, the ability to run other apps like mail replacements, PIMs, etc. Additionally, I find it amusing when the apps crash more often on my iPod Touch, then they ever have on my Nokia phone, running Symbian S60 or old Dell Axim X5, with WinMob 2k3.
As far as porting it, the iPhone/Touch is using an ARM processor too, just like all the recent Win Mob devices.
And the ability to run Skyfire.....if you are lucky enough to get it running.
way more?
it doesn't even do 'copy and paste' without buying a 9.99 application
doesn't...make...any...sense.
and how about porting the apple OS to WinMo phones?
why why why why why??????????
Because he can.
Seriously, in this day and age why are people still asking why?
Why not?
Because this is the only other way to Copy/Paste on the iPhone

The whole reason I bought the iphone was because windows mobile was horrible. Why would you want this :S
And your desire not to use WinMobile should factor into this how?
I stated my take on it and asked a question, as I cant understand why someone would want this. You however turned around and assumed I thought it was all about me. If you want windows mobile then you should be buying an htc touch, not an iphone.
Wait you make no sense. You said 'you' stated your take on it and then you get upset because he assumed it was your opinion? Wow, that's all I have to say.
"Wow, that's all I have to say."
Good. Please stop talking.
@ Christopher Wilson
You sir, fail in so many ways.
There's sometimes more than pure UI, sometimes people actually like to do useful stuff with PDAs and phones.
Not that this whole porting story is true or anything but I'm curious, doesn't windows mobile have an issue with supporting 16 million color displays ? If it does not, the Touch HD would be better off sporting a 16 million color display.
http://www.devbuzz.com/Windows-Mobile-Screen-Size.aspx
Don't think it does ;) but at 320x240 having a 16bit over 32bit panel won't make that big of a difference ;)
Reporter: You don't have girlfriends in Norway?
Erik K.: Yes of course, but I program too.
Lawl
"but they program too, so..."
I'm pretty sure he said "yes of course but THEY program too"
I'm also pretty sure the interviewer girl ends up sleeping with this kid. No girls ask about girlfriends unless they are interested.
I guess that means no Android on iPhone. Curse the sexy horny reporter!
Take the most expensive piece of hardware and add the worst OS. It's the stuff of nightmares. I assume they've done this 'because they can' and not for the benefit of gadget-kind
Yeah...because you wouldn't want it, so therefore nobody else would...
look at the other videos. Metal Detector???!!! Caloric Counter??!!! Come on SPOOF!!
Long winters with Norwegian nerds. Sounds like paradise.
I suspect a well timed video...
While being interviewed? Sounds like a stretch man.
Agreed with the well timed video comment. This is not very difficult. As much as I'd like to believe this was true, I call shenanigans. This one is much more convincing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1_3275FrfU
The only smudge marks you see on the screen is from his initial touch (hitting play for the movie/magic to start). I mean, come on people, he touches the home button and the calendar launches.
I think somewhere, some one mind just got blown.....
Ahhh my eyes! The whole reason the iPhone is better than all the other touchscreen mockups is the software! Still, I can imagine a few people would be psyched...
Guess what? You are treating opinion as fact. Stop that you raging fan boy.
I disagree. I dislike the iPhone's operating system, however very much love the hardware (It's QUITE powerful. ) WinMo on an iPhone make a lot of sense. Just give it MultiTouch TouchFLO and we're set.
To the idiot above this comment... You honestly would like to run the complete disaster that is Windows mobile on the iPhone?? That should be illegal...
Wow, I've never used an iPhone for more than 2 minutes, but as an unfortunately user of WinMo for the past 7months, I can see this is a huge step BACKWARDS!
How can a dual boot option be a step backwards? You get to be in either OS when you want and run whatever application you wanted, even if Apple doesn't allow such a program on the iPhone such as turn by turn GPS software....seems like a step forward to me.
I don't believe you at all quite frankly. What device are you using with windows mobile that it is SO terrible? Actually nevermind that, just tell us what your problem is.
actually I replied before the movie loaded so dual boot is actually very cool.
will this guy make any money off months of development if this is real?
Most expansive? the last time i checked there are more expansive phones
That's super questionable imo, I'm no programmer but...
'works like a bootloader' - He didn't press the power button, he touched the screen, opening an app
Now, with the hundreds of shitty apps on itunes I reckon it'd be pretty easy to chain a few WinMo screens together to look like the iphone was running it
Just my 2 pence...
Just like someone said above, this is a viral marketing campaign. sponsored by © sonic emotion AG (they make headphones). People, this is NOT REAL. Come on, have you seen some of the other supposed inventions/aps. http://myphone2008.com/index.html
- An iPhones xray scanner
- A Food Analyzer app that counts calories by taking a picture.
This is all bogus.
This is no way real.. that girl knows too much about technology therefore I have to say fake :\
Wow, if this this turns out to be good (or at least real), I just might grab an iphone :)
Finally!
what happened to my post? Was it sexist? C'mon Engadget.
Am I anti-techsavvinessless-ite?
Yes I am.
Yes, it was. Don't be that guy.
It was about her not being tech-savvy. Why would I want to know about his girlfriend-status availability, as opposed to knowing whether or not 3G works, Accelerometer flips Today screen, WM apps are installable...etc?
There was a point there.
It was about women in general being inferior interviewers than men. We're not having that on our site, end of discussion.
Will all due respect to female tech interviewers everywhere (from which future mrs.tarex would hopefully be), Have you seen a male interviewer as a software developer if he has a girlfriend, ignoring the question elephants in the room about WM running on an iPhone?
And, why so serious?
why so serious !!!!
lets put a smile on that face.
This is fake, just go and watch the other videos on myphone2008.com!
It's funny videos but all fake. :)
Too funny to be real!
I agree... So much bull on that page...
Young Norwegian boys and girls programming to get through their long winter. Fake.
Next up for tri-boot mode....Android!
iPr0n...
This would be great for ppl that want copy/paste or want to watch flash. You know, fill in the blaring holes apple left in its OS.
I like the iPhone but man did they miss the boat in sooo many areas. There is not even a search feature... I mean really!!
I had an app on my old Jailbroken 1.14 iTouch that was a fake Linux bootloader, you loaded it up and it was a fullscreen app that looked like some version of Linux was loading up and then it would look like Linux was loaded. Reminds me of that. I like Bootcamp btw, I'm using it right now.
Uh, didn't anyone watch the REST of the videos? I'm sorry, but the crowd in the sonicemotion video is a joke. How can this NOT be fake!? Then there's the flub when the guys says WITHOUT LOOKING "It's like that gentleman--it's like that Lady over there" No idea why they made this page, but it's most certainly a fake.
My take? With two sonicemotion videos, this is a viral video BY THEM to drive traffic to their site. The other apps are fakes, this one is real, and the whole conference site is fake, just to drive you to their site. Notice the ONLY two videos that have download links are, you guessed it, Sonicemotion waveears.
One more time - for good measure.
The iphone has no hardware-qwerty anyway - but i have never seen or heard of an win mobile phone which boots up in just 15 seconds. the only strange things is, why they choose such a bad "actor" as "nerd"?
By the way: There was that "crowd-pleaser" myPhone 2008 thing? You can not find any information at the website about the place or which companys have been there. Oh, I hust found on contact and then imprint that there IS a company with the name "sonic emotion AG" from switzerland behind that thing...

If you can have the Mac OS and Windows Mobile on the iPhone dual booting (a la Boot Camp) then I definitely know what my next phone will be. I mean look at it this way; you get the best of both worlds! (Make it boot with Android as well and you have a killer device in a nice sexy form)
Scratch my comment! I didn't watch the video before I posted :(
Fake. Look at when he "touches" the home button. It's a tactile button and doesn't even come close to depressing it. All the other times he supposedly touches the screen are pretty suspect as well.
All that's left is installing an iPhone skin on top of WinMo and the circle of life is finally complete.
This is most definitely a fake.
There would be two options to get Windows Mobile on Apple hardware:
1) Tweak and recompile the whole OS to run on the iPhone's processor/hardware
He would need access to MS source code to do that and ALOT of time. Unlikely...
2) Create a Windows Mobile emulator than runs the OS unmodified atop OSX.
Emulation is notoriously slow and memory hungry. The iPhone only has 128MB RAM, most of which is used to run OS X, which would also have to be running behind the emulation.
So, I say FAKE!
My understanding is (and someone more knowledgeable please correct me.) That the UI and API componets in Windows Mobile are generic. The only things that really differ from device to device are the HW specific binary blobs for drivers for things like the radio, chipset, storage controllers and the functions for HW buttons, touchscreens, etc.
It's not impossible to believe that he could get the the OS to load. But he would need intimate knowledge of the iPhone hardware to make it usable.
I'm willing to bet the the OS loads but nothing else functions. I'd be very surprised if he got the radio working well enough to join the network and make a call.
If this is true the iPhone will finally be a smart phone
Huge improvement, but AAPL still wins when you suckers buy their crap.
I'm Norwegian, and the accent he has on his english doesn't sound norwegian at all, but I might be wrong here. Other things that need to be sorted out. Yes we have long winters, and yes, we code (I code right now). And yes, we have girlfriends. The norwegian girls are almost as pretty as the swedish ones...
I second that - the accent does not resemble Norwegian. Sounds German, I think. Even if this is a bit off topic: Yes, Norwegian girls are about as pretty as the Swedish. As a Norwegian living in Sweden I think that I have discovered the reason why Norwegians come second: Swedes wear more makeup. Yes, that's why.
I second-second that. The accent is clearly german, and not norwegian. We (Norwegians) tend to have a different tonation of the words when we are not completely trying to sound like an american. Highly suspect video...and who would ever want to run Windows Mobile on an iPhone anyway?!
FAKE!
This certainly will expose apple's OS problems as Winmo will certainly show the great potential of the iphone 3G hardware. Therefore, I think Apple will sue big time!
Wow I really like this idea. Can't wait to try it when it's open sourced in January... (Did anyone else notice how blazingly fast that thing booted up! Faster than my old tilt, a natively running Winmo phone!)
This SO is a German accent!
Very fishy indeed...
thats so cool, at least you'll have the choice! jobs wont be happy!
Fake or not, it does raise the question of could the iphone run a VM. Hmm...
All acting, so obvious...
Fake I say
look right before he 'starts up' that bootloader.
instead of restarting the phone, he touches the screen somewhere close to the middle of the screen, so it looks more like an app that 'simulates' windows mobile. also, when he presses the home button, it switches to some other application. i think this looks really fake
In related news, hackers have installed a Hyundai 4 cylinder engine in a Rolls Royce.
Were they able to port over that 10 year warranty as well?
It would be great to give others a choice, Me I still love the OSX,
It would be great to give others a choice, Me I still love the OSX,Then again I don't want anything Windows on my phone!!!
I don't see how this is an improvement over the iPhone OS... unless this gives them copy/paste, MMS, push email that works and a browser that doesn't crash.
Madness? T-h-i-s i-s PROGRAMMING!
No, because the iPhone is an awesome design. But, what makes it the best is the OS. So if you take the OS off it is just a Phone minus the 'i.'
