Dell's XPS One, now in face-friendly 24-inch form
After almost a year of 20-inchedness, Dell's going after those in need of extra pixels with the new XPS One 24. The 24-inch all-in-one brings a 1920 x 1080, 16:9 display, perfect for some HD entertainment, and the $1,699 starting price includes a bit more than you'll get in one of those $999 20-inchers. There's 4GB of RAM standard, integrated Intel GMA X4500HD graphics and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor under the hood. Dell's still offering this in (PRODUCT) RED and regular, non-humanitarian versions, and for some extra cash you can spring for discreet NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics or a Blu-ray drive. The TV tuner is still standard, and at least a few basic configurations look to be available now.

24"? Wow, iMac ripoff.
Yes, because you know, all-in-ones didn't exist before the iMac. Genius.
Wait, did I say genius? I really meant _idiot_.
Because Apple invented the 24" screen obviously...
People, from now on just ignore such comments, really, it's not even worth the couple finger flicks. Rate'em down and go on with your life.
(irony post)
it cant be a rip off of an imac....imac's dont have the option to include a "bag of hurt" drive....
@ Erwos
I may be wrong, but as far as I know the first all-in-one was the first Macintosh...
Besides, the Imac was, indeed, the first all-in-one with that specific shape, even if it seems obvious today.
It beats the iMac on some available features, not quite as good on others. I like the front but I hate the back.
when I clicked the "comments" button, I was hoping so hard that no one would say something about the iMac... but i guess it was inevitable. I died a little inside today.
why so expensive? cant they just put a slim computer on the back of a 24" LCD? people might want to upgrade the computer part some day...
According to the Dell website this is not 16:9 or 1920x1080. Here is the quote from the specifications:
XPS One 24
24" Widescreen, High Definition Display
WUXGA (1900x1200) resolution at 16.7 million colors
Contrast Ratio (up to 1200:1 typical)
Wide Viewing Angle (up to 89 degrees)
Fast pixel-response rate (6ms typical)
6ms refresh? Could be PVA, which is a lot nicer than the cheapy TN panels Dell has been pushing lately. Can anyone confirm this?
I'll bet if they were Mac specs they would be right to the tee!
Anyway, this looks like a beautiful computer, even if it's not "True HD".
Chris,
I'm not sure what the Dell is, but I am sure you can get TN panels with 5ms refresh (and probably less). What makes you think it's not TN?
Only if the screen was matte. Please Dell.
@Backlin: This isn't 1080p but it's got 120 extra lines of resolution. You can keep your 16:9 format to TVs, thank you.
This will absolutely be my next investment.
Ooh..I dig.
This is well smart. Release of this is a slight hope of the Studio XPS notebooks maybe next week if we're luckly?
Fingers crossed.
Seems like that 9600GT is becoming the standard across the board isn't it?
the 9600GT is a very stable, (very, very stable) all-around card, does everything joe schmo could ever want, plus games at a decent rate and price. Anything less is into the serious budget market and anything more is purely gamer territory. I ordered one from newegg as my first PCI-E from AGP a month ago when they announced all those price cuts. Well worth the cash.
I have high hopes for the Studio 13, the M1330's replacement.
Hmm. That's weird. I don't see the option for Blu-Ray anywhere.
It's listed under the tech details section, but for some reason did not show up as an option under "Build."
This blows the 24" iMac away in terms of performance and value. (Dell) - Intel® CoreTM 2 Quad vs. (Apple) Intel Core 2 Duo. (Dell) 4GB RAM vs. (Apple) 2GB RAM. (Dell) 750 GB HD vs. (Apple) 500 GB HD. (Dell) 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT vs. (Apple) NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB memory. The XPS also includes a really nice JBL speaker system + subwoofer, and integrated TV Tuner card. All that to boot for a starting price of 200 less (Dell) vs. (Apple). The only advantage I give the iMac is the Apple OS X, but with these specs the Dell should run Vista just fine.
Same for all Apple computers.
There is two way to buy a Mac:
A) You want OS X period.
B) You don't want to compare.
not to mention dell's dead pixel/customer satisfaction policy is a hundred times better.
plus ill bet this runs osx86 nicely. very good looking computer.
@ Alexandre
Or reason C) You want to use it with two monitors
you guys are smoking crack.
my iMAc has 1TB, and in terms of graphic the 8800 card is the equivalent of the 9800 card - the 9600 is the league of its predecessor , the 8600 ( or ATI 2600 pro) , that's a big difference.
imacs 8800 trumps the 9600 - , and both machines have 4GB of ram, at least in my case.
dell's is more a tv unit for the media center nonsense, Imac is an audio, graphic production machine - with the better OS - i like vista - but work on both - and apple is just more stable - and more for a productive workflow. that's outisde this thread though.
the new aluminum iMacs run Cool and supersilent- 24" screen is great and 3.06 GHZ with 6MB L2 Cache is faaast...faster than some quadcores. trust with the next upgrade (coz it has been out for a while), this dell will be left even further behind.
also, if you buy dell, it comes with all that crap software you have to uninstall, teh stupid pop ups...just so much marketing and tie - ins. i set them up for the office, coz dells are cheap...
still waiting for the Dell XPS One 27 and 30
Very nice. If I didn't care about expansion or upgrading, I would buy this in a second. I've got that same monitor and it's super. Definitely blows away my girlfriends Sony All-in-One that had a melt down a month after purchase.
With Dell's regular sales, this should be even more competitively priced in a few months.
They should make one of these with a regular lcd tv . So that I can connect a cable box to it via hdmi.
add to the list of positives a wireless keyboard and mouse as standard fare, more usb connections, much better speakers, built-in hdtv tuner, better microphone and webcam. I like the iMac's sleek design much better, but this offers a hell of a lot more.
i'm looking at this because it has a built in tv tuner.
does anyone know if any other all-in-ones have it?
anyone know if the tv tuner works well on here.
i'm also considering getting an iMac used with a slingbox.
The HP TouchSmart I have comes standard with a TV tuner.
Strage thing... I was looking at the stats and it won't support an external monitor!
Seems like kind of a glaring omission. When they say XPS One, they really mean ONE!
At least the iMac can drive an extra monitor in case you need the screen space.
The most important question, which I can't find the answer on in the announcements nor at Dell:
Matte or Glossy?
i'm pretty sure it's glossy after reading the reviews on the Dell site. a couple (like 2/100) complained about the glare.
she's still a beauty
oh hot DAMN.
AAHHH!!!!!!!!! A couple months ago I bought the "old" 20 inch model...I love it but I wish i had known that this one would be coming out....
i like the iMac too... needs a better graphics card, matte screen, blu-ray player AND SUPPORT! , blah, blah and everything else anyone has complained about. These are nice, but I wish you could dual boot OSX and Vista, not on a hackintosh but on a computer that came with Windows...
still no Vista x64.
HP pwns joo Dell.
Why don't they sell this in Canada?
i've tried to figure this one out. but doesnt say why anywhere.
they've even released the older model in japan, germany
i'm planning on going to the states, buying it a Dell direct, and then bringing it back.
apparantly (i've read) that there's no duty on computers - just tax.
Guys, I heard the iMac is better for games: http://anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=3446&p=8
No fan boy BS just unbiased benchmarks.
And it still isnt available in Canada yet. I want an XPS one, come on Dell.
