HP's Compaq Mini 700 thinks he's a Mini 1000, only better

Without a single official peep on the matter from HP (that we can find), its Compaq division has apparently announced a Mini 700 netbook in the UK that is a near spec-for-spec equivalent to HP's Mini 1000 already available in the US. Only get this, it will feature a 10.2-inch, 1,024 x 600 (16:10 aspect ratio) display and optional HSDPA data radio when it ships in mid December for a £299 starting price... that's 100 Quid less and two months before the UK's Mini 1000 with 10.1-inch, 1,024 x 576 pixel (16:9 ratio) display hits the UK high street. Hey, that's the hubbub in the British press. Care to elaborate HP?

I think it looks quite nice.
i'm digging the look!
Im digging it too, but thats no reason for your "O" face.
Yeah, looks very good and smart for the price
That thing is mighty pretty.. I want :)
If and when they release it with a dual-core (or any higher performance Atom) I will jump upon it. Compaq sell their notebooks at very competitive prices, with many as low as $AUD 400 after mail-in rebates. The design and build quality is usually excellent so I'm quite excited for this unit. Hopefully it will have the left-click/right-click buttons at the bottom of the trackpad and not on either side like the HP Mini 1000.
Glad I decided to wait it out and not buy the ASUS 701. Screen sizes have increased, keyboards have been getting easier to type on and prices have fallen.
Bad luck. Take a closer look at the pic in the summary. It's buttons are either side of the trackpad as well.
Devastating :(
Am I the only one disappointed by the failure of VIA to step up and ship their Nanos? I was really hoping that they'd have something out there soon enough that HP could run with 'em. Are there any mainstream manufacturers that might still ship those?
New Compaq logo looks good, and with the design, they've shrugged off their cheapo image.
Want.
Yo, where have you been??
That new logo has been around for well over a year.
I'm really hoping the HSDPA makes its way into the HP Mini 1000 or the 2133. This would be the perfect netbook if it stepped up with that, 2GB of RAM and a dual-core Atom.
I'm confused. This Compaq Mini 700 seems every bit as good as the Mini 1000, it even got a (slightly) bigger screen, whose gonna buy the Mini 1000 when it comes out???
Probably those that are told in stores (should this be in a Best Buy or Circuit City) that by paying the extra $$ they are getting something better than what they are really getting.
Or those that swear by HP over Compaq, even though they are essentially the same thing. People are weird. But there will be people that will buy something that's more expensive just for the brand name...
That does look like a very sweet little machine...and in the absence of anything in fruity flavours,
I may have to buy my self a...
Computer
Of
Moderate
Price
And
Quality
Solo
...about the Quality part, I've always found Compaq notebooks bomb proof ;-)
They are the same hardware you can find numerous HP & Compaq models that are exactly the same except for price and logo.
Perhaps the article is wrong, and we'll see a VIA Nano processor in this unit instead of the Atom. That may explain the huge price difference.
I do hope that it's better built than my Mini-Note ( HP2133 ), 10 days is all it took fry the motherboard. :-(
why does HP keep that dead brand around? Are they not proud enough of the HP brand? Compaq means nothing anymore.
I'm a Mac guy but, I have to say this is the best looking HP I've seen in a long time. Not sure about the click button on the side of the trackpad though, it looks like it could be awkward. Otherwise, it's pretty sweet.
But will it feature that sleek looking MIE OS?
One of these two I will definably end up buying...
How is this different than the 1000 except that it has an HSDPA option and is missing the gay swirly design of the Mini?
Well, ive heard that Mini 1000 wont be available in Europe and that Compaq 700 will be the European model of Mini 1000.
I hate those low res screens. 1024x600/1024x576? Puhleaze.
My 7" Kohjinsha has a 1024x600 touch screen. Those friggin Fujitsu UMPC's even have 1280x800 on a 5.6" screen.
10" should be at least 1280x800
