The
news is flowing
hot and
heavy from Barcelona, and the latest succulent tidbits to land in our laps are these. First up, a
fresh version of
Nokia Maps is on tap, which includes "a number of new features such as high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps, as well as a new route overview during routing and during Drive, the purchasable turn-by-turn car navigation guidance." Furthermore, users will find new options such as access to real time information (camera alerts, safety spots, traffic information, etc.) and Wcities event guides that give real time information for events and movies in over 450 destinations. Next is Nokia Messaging -- which is bringing popular IM services to the majority of Nokia handsets -- and Mail on Ovi, which enables PC users to "create and access Ovi email accounts as well as gain cross access to other Ovi services with just a single sign-on account." Plunge into the links below for more details on each.

Oh good. I played with a E71 at BestBuy and the Maps application was a bit sucky. Customer Service was nice though. Asked a guy on the sales floor if they had an unlocked one to play with and he brought one out that was sealed in the box, opened it, and popped my sim card in.
Hopefully they'll make the map interface a bit more intuitive with this update.
Nice, the Ovi Messaging client is pretty awesome, nice to be able to use it on most of the symbian-based nokias.
it mentions using a data plan in the FAQ (for the messaging), but it doesn't mention if it will be able to use just wifi. With data rates what they are for me, a 3G program like this might end up costing me way too much to be beneficial.
All the GSM carriers I have as an option only including data if its accessed through their "certified" software, which this wouldn't apply, I'd have to sign up for an extra $20/month data plan to use it if it doesn't use wifi..
I just installed it and it doesn't seem to have an option to just use wifi. even the setup uses 3G... too rich for my blood.. especially since its only a "trial".
I'll stick to the previous email and IM software I have for now.
