You know, we see a lot (
a lot) of PR for CES meetings, press events, booth tours, and even the occasional
Jeopardy! contest. Rarely, if ever, do we get that geeky little skip in our hearts. We did, however, get one of those skips today when Palm mailed out its announcement for CES 2009, promising "all that Palm New-ness you've been waiting for." If you're an avid reader (and we know you are), then you're aware that the crew at Engadget
has been waiting / wishing for said new-ness for a
long,
long,
long time. Couple this news with recent chats we've had with sources close to the company suggesting that something kind of amazing is coming that "won't disappoint," and, well... you do the math. Seriously guys, this is the eleventh hour -- if you don't come out swinging this time, you might not get another chance at bat. Fingers crossed -- let 'em rip.
I know it is going to be difficult for palm to recover but
GO PALM GO!! I'm rooting for you!!
I'm cheering for Palm too! I just hope the wait was worth it
::closes iPhone website::
I will always have a soft spot for Palm in my heart. Let's hope they do some good.
Hoping this is a good thing and not a Foleo 2 or something, unless the Foleo is a netbook (not a "smartphone companion"). Really hoping they can pull off a comeback.
Yeah, given their track record .. I have no doubt they will unveil awesome products having taken engadget's feedback and intervention seriously.
/tstis (the sarcasm tag is stupid)
I hear that they're coming out with the new Centro!!! In Bronze!!!111!!!
I hope they release the new Plam OS 2 with a form factor like this http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=570 or this http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=667 . no antenna of course.
Like everyone else who remembers when Palm was the only game in PDA town, I'm hoping that Nova turns out to be a hit.
The only thing that kept me from sticking with Palm was its stagnation in certain technologies that Palm OS 5.x couldn't overcome. Looking forward to seeing something concrete from this.
It's been a long time coming (probably even longer because of missteps like the Foleo)

I hope it's cool and comes soon! I'm really hoping Palm can pull it off! If it looks like a modern treo (800w/Pro) but with a slider and is slimmer I'd probably buy it, well if the OS is good. I mean Garnet isn't bad, it's just old now.
Though I should admit I use a x6800/Mogul and am looking at the touch pro, but boy would I love for Palm to take a stab at Windows Mobile!
if they actually pull something out off their as* then i'll be amazed to say the least
Steve Jobs pulled something out of his as* and lots of people are fans of it :P
Gross!
@Mobius_1:
Steve jobs could pull a turd out of his a ss and people would want to buy it.
Ass.
Just checking to make sure we could still say it.
Test
Just checking that I've not been banned for naysaying against Apple.
They better come out fighting hard or they are going to die very painful death. Lets face it they are dying just like Motorola.
Like Motorola?
Sorry, but the big M has a number of businesses it's involved in. Some of them even continue to make money.
Palm, unfortunately, has been circling the drain for a few years now. The fact that they produce phones that run WinMo should be a clue--what if Apple started selling machines with Windows as the default O/S?
Always liked Palm, and I, too, am pulling for them to come out with something compelling (I liked the idea of the Foleo, by the way, but my telco would have billed me through the roof for tethering charges).
I really hope Palm has finally gotten it's act together and comes up with a fantastic product. An Android based fantastic phone with full Palm OS compatibility and "the fastest" webkit based browser would be amazing. Oh, and price it at 149 with contract.
I don't care much about the speed of the javascript engine, I just want someone else besides Apple to figure out how to make a smooth, fluid, graphics accelerated mobile browser!
Oh, and price it at 149 withOUT contract.
better be my darn Palm OS 2!
I was hoping more along the lines of Palm OS 6, considering going to OS 2 would be a rather large step backwards...
Dcoaster you really don't follow Palm OS news do you? Its called Palm OS 2 because its a brand new OS not using any of the orginal code tree. It uses a VM layer to provide backwards compatibility with old palm 5.2 OS apps but its a linux under layer and again COMPLETELY NEW. So from Palm OS to Palm OS 2.
Primate: Does that mean that when the second version of this OS comes out its going to be Palm OS 2 2.0?
"Primate: Does that mean that when the second version of this OS comes out its going to be Palm OS 2 2.0?"
Why would it be 2.0? Isn't it more logical to start at 1.0? Yeah, thought so..
Wow, Patriks.
Just... Wow.
I miss my old Palm apps...Going to dig out my Tungsten T tonight and see if it'll still charge.
And, IIRC, the "Palm OS 2" name hasn't been used for over a year, for the Linux-based Palm OS.
It's now codenamed Nova, IIRC.
Let me guess...a touch screen, keyboard less smartphone? Another iPhone killer wannabe? Haven't we had enough of those casualty during 2008?
Oh ye of little faith. It's not unreasonable to believe that a company could have an original concept for once.
another wanabee?.. Take an 8 years old design like the Tungsten (the widescreen one), add a phone chip... and then people like you will still believe its designed after the iphone even thought its AN 8 YEARS OLD design, if not older.
Palm paved the way for touchscreen phones... and then they tried to be blackberries with a keyboard, and then screwed up.. I mean, really, where is my T5/TX with a phone inside, its not so hard to do (I don't care about the treo/centro).
Anonymous sources "close to the company" saying "Wow!" suck.
Let's have something a little meatier than that!
What a freaking ijit.
Maybe they'll introduce a compact portable computer that works with the Treo. It'll be bigger than the Palm but smaller than a real laptop. If they price it at something outrageous, like $599, they'll make tons of money and save the company! They can call it the Foolio or something clever like that. Put a fork in 'em...Palm is done.
I got rid of my Treo 755p a while back, but I hope Palm releases something to win me back.
c'mon Palm, make it happen!
I really really want to believe. I have been hurt so many times before.
Lets go Palm!
We need other options as compared to iPhone, WM & Android!
We're expecting an Epiphany here, Palm.
Having sold off your important bits (OS, Desktop) to those who didn't / haven't given a flying f*ck (PalmSource - then sold to ACCESS), prostituted yourselves to build indifferent and just plain dodgy hardware for wireless companies while ignoring your original fan base and then continued to promise us the world and consistently given us a lump of coal instead, you'll have to pull off a Miracle here.
Palm New-ness, huh? Someone else's OS with even less functionality, using a dinky screen, in a smartphone built by Asus, more like.
Still, feel free to supply us with a Miracle, Palm...
PALM PALM PALM!
Flopeo has resurrected back from the dead
Notice they spell "New" with a capital N, "Nova", also capital N, is Portugese for "new"...
I'm skeptical...Last time I was excited by a Palm announcement, they brought us the Foleo.
Me, too.
Yeah Palm, just dont pull a Blackberry Storm on us.
I'm not in the market for a smartphone, so I don't care, unless Palm suddenly puts out a new, good PDA.
*grabs Palm poms*
Ok I got nothing.....
Did Engadget actually get an invite to see the new hotness?
Go Palm! Please make something great! Then get Motorola two do something too. Kill Samsuck.
I recognize that little kid from The Simpsons on the blurred poster...
