The
E100 was a little weak for the iriver name, but at $59 for 8GB of PMP deliciousness, it's hard to resist. Walmart is clearing out the black iteration for $40 off the original price, and while we'd hate to presume and be wrong, we're hoping this is just a sign that iriver's gonna go all out at CES '09. Bring the heat, baby.

Looks like iriver finally understood the value of their stuff. I'm writing this as a iriver device owner (2 different players).
jinsei888 @ Dec 27th 2008 2:23PM
3 stars...no thanks
L @ Dec 27th 2008 2:28PM
From a single rating. *Very* representative.
Chase @ Dec 27th 2008 2:29PM
the only review you can trust when it has one reviewer is the iPhone.
Shinigami @ Dec 27th 2008 2:29PM
Wait, I'll go add another 3-star rating. 1 star for the player, 5 stars for the price.
Chase @ Dec 27th 2008 2:28PM
no wonder, you can't even spell people!
bandigolo @ Dec 27th 2008 2:40PM
Hey Chase, way to take an otherwise entertaining and witty comment from Eggo and completely ruin it via your cunning replies! I'm sure that all of us here greatly appreciate your contributions.
eggothewaffle @ Dec 27th 2008 2:48PM
...Right, so it is all good and fun to make direct insults about Indian or Asian people, but all of a sudden, a wordplay indirectly referencing black people is unthinkable.
I will never understand white people.
Superman @ Dec 28th 2008 9:36PM
Indians are asians... jeez be a man

Anyone else notice the lack of comments today?

It's a early winter heat wave in most of the U.S. today. With temps in the 50s and 60s in the Northern and Eastern parts of the nation, it's a fine day to just sit outside in many places.
RyogaHibiki @ Dec 27th 2008 3:15PM
I bought the 8Gb iriver Lplayer for $50 from newegg on black friday. The 4GB version is selling for $59 at Fry's right now. I'd rather buy that one than the E100 anyday.
solarpos @ Dec 27th 2008 3:26PM
iRiver's iStone Paperweight
Arkenklo @ Dec 27th 2008 6:25PM
Naah, iRiver would never name anithing related with them iXxx.
Oh wait, never mind.
Matt @ Dec 28th 2008 5:57AM
I'm amazed how misinformed people are about this...
First iRiver device (a MP3 CD player named the iMP-100) was released in November 2000
The first Apple iPod was launched in October 2001. *Nearly a WHOLE YEAR later*
And in that year, iRiver held the #1 spot in the global market of media players.
So when people say that iRiver were just a knockoff of the iPod, they couldn't be more wrong. The iRiver brand came before the iPod.
Superman @ Dec 28th 2008 9:38PM
Matt
In essence iRiver is a knockoff of the iPod...
Brand name, no, but current and previous products (after the iPod), yes...
Christian Walters @ Dec 27th 2008 3:34PM
Man, CES 09, already better than E3 09!
Johan S @ Dec 27th 2008 3:44PM
@eggothewaffle
It's not that clear what "wordplay" you're getting at. Are you referring to the fact that they had the word black in the description?
Either way, your "joke" (if that's what it is) isn't very funny or tasteful .. and comes off as a baseless accusation of racism by some person who walks around hoping they'll bump into something they can act offended by.
Wayne @ Dec 27th 2008 4:11PM
wow iRiver really seems to be pushing the price of this player down just for sales. Is it really that bad that people wont buy it?
Shoumik @ Dec 27th 2008 4:18PM
"Indian or Asian people...."
Indian people are Asian.
bolezhinkov @ Dec 27th 2008 4:23PM
dear everyone. the product was black and it was a PMP. pmple. its really clever and probably will take 4-8 reads for most of you to get it.
ace587 @ Dec 27th 2008 4:25PM
that is cheap o_O
Shinigami @ Dec 27th 2008 8:10PM
Its super-cheap but still not worth it. IMO.
You can get a 16gb usb flash for $60, right? It won't play music but will store a lot of info for you.
As for players, Sandisc Sansa Clip is said to be a good thing, has up to 8gb storage and has great sound quality. And microSDHC slot. But make sure you buy a pair of expensive earbuds to be able to make music sound as good as it should.
Smacksmackums @ Dec 27th 2008 10:09PM
None of my Sansa Clips have a microSD slot. What are you talking about?
bot @ Dec 27th 2008 5:32PM
Ugh, what happened to iriver? Their H-120 and H-320 series was amazing for its time, but everything after that was just a half assed effort. I guess the Clix was alright, but the capacity was too small to be anything serious.
Xee @ Dec 27th 2008 9:35PM
I just bought a used H320 last year over eBay for close to what it sold at retail. It's a brick compared to players these days but no MP3 player at the time offered the same capabilities.
iKurt @ Dec 27th 2008 8:01PM
Spend the extra cash and get an iPod instead. It's worth it.
Hafk @ Dec 27th 2008 9:24PM
Oh, you know you are going to get downed for that.
I might even get downed for this.
Jake B @ Dec 27th 2008 11:40PM
Get a Zune instead.
SummerBoy @ Dec 27th 2008 10:41PM
No wonder they priced it down.. not worth it..get a ipod instead..
Baba Booey @ Dec 27th 2008 10:58PM
why should someone get aN ipod instead? so they can be locked into iTunes? and not have .flac? and not have expandable memory?
Boards of Canada @ Dec 27th 2008 11:04PM
this is the Chevy Chase of all PMP
bandigolo @ Dec 28th 2008 12:02AM
Did a moderator actually delete the "black pmple" joke thereby reverting the replies to root comment status? Wow. Eggo's comment was maybe the 1,285th most offensive thing I've read on this blog. And it was funny. Sigh.
Rollins @ Dec 28th 2008 4:23AM
Yep, they did. It would have been nice of them to at least delete the replies. Or edit the offending comment so it's still obvious that there was a comment at all.
igolfchip @ Dec 28th 2008 5:35PM
Purchased this for my wife from Wal-mart. Not only $59 + free ship, used paypal and got a $20 rebate back = $39 total cost.
I wouldn't have paid $100 for this, but for $39 this is a rocking DAP. UI is just fine, sound quality and OS speed work great.
Erv @ Jan 2nd 2009 12:14PM
back up to $69 now
