Washing machine hacked to tweet when the load's done: @maytag, you listening?
We're truthfully not sure what's cooler: the fact that the above pictured washing machine tweets when it's done, or the fact that the above pictured washing machine still works. We're guessing that the geeks in the crowd would argue that it's clearly the former, and for those interested in a little proof / explanation, you can head on past the break for a video demonstration. But just so you know, it's highly unlikely that your Twittering washer will have any diehard followers.

What if you're out of the house when it's done? There should be a set time after it's over to save electricity.
PyRo1509 @ Jan 3rd 2009 6:33AM
is electricity in danger?
Fernando G. @ Jan 3rd 2009 6:49AM
shes being held for ransom by my provider
Bob @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:34AM
Then you follow the twitter feed of the washer on your phone and are notified that it's done. Actually, that's kinda cool... Though not really all that practical unless you have a huge house.
Rik @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:27PM
@PyRo1509
That's the best comment i've read in a looooooong time, LOL!
OneLove @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:36PM

Saad Rabia @ Jan 3rd 2009 6:54AM
Meh, Whatever.
My washing machine has her own facebook page and visits Engadget and Digg occasionally.
I love my girlfriend.
dotAaron @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:11AM
LOL
Saad Rabia wins :)
Valicore @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:43PM

bradley.will @ Jan 3rd 2009 6:23PM
I was going to say that I NEED THIS for my washing machine to avoid that moldy smell, and then I realized that I have a girlfriend who would probably object to becoming my washing machine. Saad, you are a king among geeks.
Taylor @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:42AM
I guess there's a use for this if you're using a laundry other than one in your house/apartment, and you'd feel safe leaving it running without you being there.
You could just get the tweet on your phone when it's done and then go and pick it up.
iPhoney @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:44AM
but...........can it play Crysis
hamza @ Jan 3rd 2009 7:48AM
No, but I'm pretty sure it can blend it if someone else feels the need to ask the question.
Backlin @ Jan 3rd 2009 10:52AM
Yeah, it blends clothing, water, and laundry soap.
Where have you guys been?
Temmy @ Jan 3rd 2009 8:31AM
So does this thing wash bags of hurt? I have a few lying around.
El Taco @ Jan 3rd 2009 3:58PM
Really? Cuz I would use an extra blu-ray drive.
zed @ Jan 3rd 2009 9:19AM
Miele has this feature for ages, and it uses the power lines to communicate
system02 @ Jan 3rd 2009 9:28AM
@zed:
you're right! German MIELE, Siemens, Bosch etc.
I don't know what the pictured washing machine is but it looks like it's build in the 18th century. Poor crap ... ;-)
wickedpheonix @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:00PM
hey, I have one of those! They last forever and they WORK (which is the important thing)
doug @ Jan 3rd 2009 9:49AM
Big deal, I don't want to hear a tweet sound, mine already buzzes when it's done.
: )
THANKS AND DON'T FORGET TO TIP!
jol @ Jan 3rd 2009 5:31PM
My washing machine tweets when it's done, but it actually uses sound.
Torben @ Jan 3rd 2009 10:10AM
I wish the machines in my apartment dwelling days had this.
They were on the other side of the complex with no covered walkway in between. During the daily rain storms in florida, it was a hassle to run over there just to realize the damn thing was not done yet or had been done so long that someone pulled it out and left it sitting in the damp air.
Bob S @ Jan 3rd 2009 10:15AM
Damn! I thought it was going to play "Rockin Robin" when it was done!
Agent .25i @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:00AM
What about the dryer? I mean, to go through all this work to keep mildew from forming on your clothing in the washer, this mind set should also care for *creasing* from settled clothing in the dryer.
thehamsterman @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:01AM
This would make sense at laundromats. but maybe instead of a sign, it sends you a text letting you know that your clothes are done? It would be an expensive laundrymat...
benjrconway @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:09AM
Is this not just a variation on esuds?
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/esuds_thetartan.html
AlphaLima @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:29AM
Yes but this dosent require you to pay esuds.com and use their infrastructure.
Matt @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:41AM
They already make washing machines like this. My friend has one that plays a snippet from the Trout Quintet when finished.
Shaun @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:52AM
What's with all the crappy techno in these videos lately? Maybe that's the next big meme, using the How It's Made soundtrack for everything.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 3rd 2009 11:57AM
I'd rather have it text me. And frankly, in my own house, even the beeper is sufficient.
Garth @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:23PM
Already been done. In fact, at our local university students can go to a web page and check to see if the washers or dryers in the dorm laundry room are in use. Its really cool, the ones in use are in red and they twitch on the screen.
Silencer? @ Jan 3rd 2009 4:49PM
could you provide a model and name of the washers/dryers?
i'm trying to get this for my area thanks!
GarthBock @ Jan 5th 2009 9:45AM
Tried posting a reply to my post and nothing happens. The system used at the university is called LaundryView. Off campus users see the web page in demo mode. The link is : http://www.laundryview.com/lvs.php
jinsei888 @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:25PM
I didn't hear any twwet
Takahashi @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:25PM
I think the only thing that comes from that is bragging rights.
Jonathan-DBOSS @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:54PM
And finished laundry! xD
Takahashi @ Jan 3rd 2009 2:48PM
Hahahaha, I guess your right, I've never had problems forgetting the load, only putting in the soap... xD
jupiterthunder @ Jan 3rd 2009 12:58PM
Although it deserves cool points just for the effort, what the hell is wrong with looking at your watch (or your cellphone) and noting "it is 6:30 now. This cycle takes 15 minutes so I will come back at 6:45. It works. I live in a 2nd floor apartment but my washer and dryer is housed in the basement and I always know when the washer is done.
jupiterthunder @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:01PM
And for this guy, he could, I don't know, just listen for the washer.
Bil @ Jan 3rd 2009 5:48PM
What if you're wearing headphones playing L4D with your internet friends, and having no real friends or a SO, you wouldn't know if your laundry is done; this could be ideal.
...of course, with no friends or SO, why bother doing laundry?
Zunavio @ Jan 3rd 2009 1:14PM
It can be "hacked to send SMS to you when the load's done"

This guy needs to wash his clothes more often; his washing machine tweeted once.
