What if you're out of the house when it's done? There should be a set time after it's over to save electricity.

Then you follow the twitter feed of the washer on your phone and are notified that it's done. Actually, that's kinda cool... Though not really all that practical unless you have a huge house.

I was going to say that I NEED THIS for my washing machine to avoid that moldy smell, and then I realized that I have a girlfriend who would probably object to becoming my washing machine. Saad, you are a king among geeks.
I guess there's a use for this if you're using a laundry other than one in your house/apartment, and you'd feel safe leaving it running without you being there.
You could just get the tweet on your phone when it's done and then go and pick it up.

My washing machine tweets when it's done, but it actually uses sound.
I wish the machines in my apartment dwelling days had this.
They were on the other side of the complex with no covered walkway in between. During the daily rain storms in florida, it was a hassle to run over there just to realize the damn thing was not done yet or had been done so long that someone pulled it out and left it sitting in the damp air.
Damn! I thought it was going to play "Rockin Robin" when it was done!
What about the dryer? I mean, to go through all this work to keep mildew from forming on your clothing in the washer, this mind set should also care for *creasing* from settled clothing in the dryer.
This would make sense at laundromats. but maybe instead of a sign, it sends you a text letting you know that your clothes are done? It would be an expensive laundrymat...

They already make washing machines like this. My friend has one that plays a snippet from the Trout Quintet when finished.

Already been done. In fact, at our local university students can go to a web page and check to see if the washers or dryers in the dorm laundry room are in use. Its really cool, the ones in use are in red and they twitch on the screen.

Although it deserves cool points just for the effort, what the hell is wrong with looking at your watch (or your cellphone) and noting "it is 6:30 now. This cycle takes 15 minutes so I will come back at 6:45. It works. I live in a 2nd floor apartment but my washer and dryer is housed in the basement and I always know when the washer is done.
And for this guy, he could, I don't know, just listen for the washer.
What if you're wearing headphones playing L4D with your internet friends, and having no real friends or a SO, you wouldn't know if your laundry is done; this could be ideal.
...of course, with no friends or SO, why bother doing laundry?

Nice idea - For years our washing machine and dryer were hooked into the Home Automation system and would speak via text to speech that the washer or dryer was done and would remind until reset for the dryer. Was very handy - replaced the units last year and I've never hacked into the new ones, think I'll have to add Tweeting as well.

Not really new, some of the new buildings in New York have laundry machines with that feature. You can get text messages or an email when your laundry's done.

*Yawn* Mine just beeps loudly when it's done. Call me when someone invents a washer that DRIES your clothes when you're done. Why do we need two machines? It makes no sense, just repurpose the washer.

It's been done. Do a quick search for "washer dryer combo". LG makes a few. You can find several via NextTag.
This is very useful for college students and for those who do not have their washing machine where they can hear it beep. Also when you go out to run a quick errand.
I have had to deal with mildew clothes a few times and ended up washing them again.

At Tulane U we have had this for awhile. We use laundryview.com so I don't usually sign up for the texting stuff, but it is an option. It's great for college students as I tend to forget about it when the washing machine is not in my apartment.
