We just spent some quality time playing with GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet, which might be one of the best things we've seen at CES so far -- think of it as the Android version of the iPod touch and you'll get why we're so stoked. The unit features a 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 resistive touchscreen (sigh), and it's got a soft keyboard for text entry -- they couldn't tell us if it's running
Cupcake or not, but the keyboard worked just fine as we were playing with it. A built-in mic and front-facing camera lend themselves to out-of-the-box Skype support, there's also Bluetooth and a built-in speaker. Sadly, there's only 256MB of internal storage, but there's an microSD slot for expansion. All we got for pricing was "less than the iPod touch" -- we'll see how close GiiNii gets when this guy and the planned 7-inch Movit Maxx hit sometime in the middle of the year.
I would like to congratulate myself on being first. Coming in at first place on the comment board is like being Jesus. No one wants to do it, but the job needs to be done.
Dope!
lol nope
there are at the very least 3 reasons I hate you.
fail.
Why is it that Engadget readers like coming first...? I think that's just rude.
Regarding my last post, I meant "Doh" as in Homer Simpson. Now I look really stupid.
Stupid Engadget makes me confirm every damn comment. If I didn't have to confirm, I totally would have been first.
Ok, now there are at least 4 reasons.
You mean the fact that people replying to your stupid post causes you more work and/or more clutter in your Inbox and you don't like that?
Interesting...very interesting...
No, Craig, I always uncheck the box "E-Mail me when someone replies to this comment"
Only retards leave the box checked.
YOU'RE calling HIM the retard?!?
I am amazed.
At least he gave a good explanation.
@Billy
If you wouldn't of wrote a book on your post you would of had a chance of coming in first, you fail for that, it's not the comment system, it's your slow ass hunt and peck typing.. learn to type faster!! .... even IF you would of came in first your comment would of been down ranked because of the content, you call people a retard for not "un-checking" a check box, you're a retard for mentioning being the the first poster is like being Jesus, which I suspect you were trying to be sarcastic and funny at the same time, which you fail again. Loser.
This ones just to spam his inbox
229.98?
That is a really long name...but anyways if its cheaper that an iPod Touch and with those specs it will surely be a winner!
Slap an 800x480 display in there and I'm all over it.
Get a Nokia internet tablet and put Android on there. Not much more expensive, MUCH nicer looking and way superior hardware.
@L: Good suggestion. Sure, it's more work, but it's more expensive.
Not sure if they're still available, but the N800 were sold very cheap a while ago - ~250$; might be worth a look...
Not cheap enough: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9050206&type=product&id=1218012526050
And that's from worst buy.
I got my N810 for GPS purposes, refurbished (same warranty) online for under $300 a few months ago. I'm converting it to Android as soon as I get confirmation that Google Maps works with the built-in GPS, and the Marketplace is accessible over WiFi.
whys it gotta be like a fucking ipod touch, why cant you compare it to the G1? Oh i forgot stupid me, ipod runs Android, shit, my bad
que?
Because the G1 is a phone, douchebag.
Once again, anti-Apple fanboys are demonstrated as being way more annoying (and less intelligent) than even the most aggravating and moronic pro-Apple fanboy.
I have to say that I like my G1 more then my ipod touch but that's just my opinion.
480x272 on a 4.3in screen?
Think PSP screen, but touch. I'd get it. The PSP's resolution isn't bad and this sounds very appealing to me.
theres a way to post faster...id tell you but I would get lo ranked
Yeah, by posting a bullshit 6 character post like "229.98?" or "First!!"
its not funny when you have to explain a joke but...
the ipod touch is $229.99 so I said it would cost $229.98. So its bullshit...
looks sweet,
but its not taking over my touch any time soon.
Might get the 7 inch one to play with though
>Might get the 7 inch one to play with though
That's what she said!
Now this is a cool friggin' device.
I wonder if the browser will be able to do Flash, or if it's just the standard Android browser.
"Cheaper than the iPod Touch"? "microSD expansion" (I have a ton of microSD and microSDHC cards lying around)? SOLD! I'm glad I didn't get a iPod Touch. But I wonder what kind of processor power it has.
if I had some microsd cards i would definately shell out for this but I dont want to spend that much...that is unless its less that 100$
I don't think its cupcake because they updated the Kernel Version to 2.6.27 so it probably isn't cupcake although that would be nice
Hopefully the Maxx will have a physical keyboard..
Does anyone know if it has an accelerometer? Then it would really stand to the ipod touch.
Even better, give it the compass the that G1 has.
Does this model have an accelerometer? If not how is the landscape rotation handled?
If it dosnt have a phone, I dontwannit!
if it does, then I don't want it
Interesting product. Like JYC673, I've held out on a iPod Touch and have lots of microSD cards lying around. I hope we get a hands-on look soon, I'd like to learn more about it. I think I'll lean toward the new Walkman though.
I LOVE IT. But the screen-resolution and "resistiveness" in addition to the current lack of full flash from Android are all turn-offs.
If I'm getting a device that big then the resolution better match.
But it got me stocked for the coming G2,3...etc
235mb + microSD, 4.3" 480x272, unknown ARM processor, I'd say this probably could be sold at retail below $150.
Interesting thing, it looks like Giiniis is just a picture frame manufacturer or brand. It's cool to see they are just putting Android on their device and that it makes it an Android tablet.
Though haing a good ARM processor might be crucial to have a decent web browsing speed. For example the new ARM Cortex A8 processor loads web pages 10 times faster and smoother. But perhaps that you won't really care about page loading speeds when you are on a 480x272 screen. Also you could use the Opera Mini browser for Android which uses server-side re-encoding of web pages to have them load faster on slower processors.
Geeks. this is crap
americans wont buy this, whos gonna trust a device made by giinii.???seems feature rich but means nothing till its tried n tested n consumer market approved.remember sales determine fate n discontinuation date of all products(nokia n810 wimax tablet) .not even overhyped android software made by search engine company can rescue it.direct competitor to apple touch 8gb.,it will tank here in the usa mark my words save this email.
just curious ,who in their right mind would buy giinii 256mb mem over apple touch 8 gb here in the usa.,?
Me in a heart beat...but that might have to do with me hating apple so... but everyone has to remember that after this comes out the "2nd gen" will without a doubt be kick ass
If someone writes a Garnet emulator for Android, this could be a very nice upgrade for my Palm TX. It just needs to run a few programs not available elsewhere....
According to Gizmodo - price is $149. This is definitely looking interesting.
I'm all for more Android (and Linux in general) devices and all, but this is terrible. At that screen size, I would expect a minimum 800x480 resolution for doing web-related stuff. My N800 beats this thing on everything but price and I got it a year ago. Seriously everyone, if this thing didn't have Android on it, no one would care about it, it's just some no-name manufacturer riding the Android hype-train to shill a shitty product.
The article's pic made me think of a touch screen e-ink display. My heart skipped a beat.
149. Voip tablet with skype right out of the box & wifi honestly is already more than the touch. Add android and the apps from the market to the mix and you are well above the standard ipod touch functionality. Camera and mic! Sold!
Here is a scenario for the kids posting here. U cough out 149 you open a skype account you go to starbucks leech wifi and talk as if it was a phone. Can the touch do that!? I'm a mac user leopard is amazing and I like the design of apple products but this is not a design competition is about functionality.
it's the bee's knees.
there's wifi at work, home, airport, and the coffee shop, perfect! All I need now is an app to buffer up some internet radio so that I can play tunes in my car on the way to work :)
$149, skype, camera, sign me up.
its only $150!!!! great buy not as sleek as id like but im buyin it
...And I yawn in underwhelm-ment.
The last thing we need is a bunch of idiots trying to check their Myspace or Facebook while driving. It's bad enough when some numbwitted teenager nearly sideswipes you while texting.
I would be more inclined to take this device seriously if it weren't marketed as a Mobile Social Networking Device...your CELLPHONE is a Mobile Social Networking Device, for fuck's sake. This company is seriously catering to the lowest common denominator, and their image is going to suffer as a result. After reading the company website and this article, I don't care how "cool" everyone thinks it is now; to me, it's been tainted.
They're gonna need to do a lot better job of naming & branding than "GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet" if they expect buzz
it will cost 149 no contract that's what i heard thankx 2 CES and http://i.gizmodo.com/5126042/hands-on-giinii-movit-mini-the-android-tablet also said it.
After checking the official GiiNii site, found on Google by searching "GiiNii", and from watching about 5 YouTube videos, here is my opinion.
The GiiNii Movit Mini. (Some people spell it Moveit, but that's wrong!)
Features:
WiFi
Skype Out-of-the-Box
Bluetooth 2.0 (Perhaps a headset for Skype? A keyboard? Who knows!?)
4.3" 480 x 272 resistive touchscreen which sucks.
Possible flash support, though at the low price, don't expect to be playing Linerider at more than 5FPS!
Built in Microphone and Speaker to use as a phone with Skype and WiFi.
Long-ish battery life at the moment, 4 hours of full function.
149.99
Android
Doesn't look that bad, but the low resolution and crappy projected processor will boot this down.
While I'm neutral on Apple, I'll say this:
The iPod Touch is slick and sexy and very smooth and transparent,
GiiNii is ugly and doesn't scroll smoothly, but provides "better" (IMHO) functionality.
Sincerely,
TedM
You can tell it's Android because of that clock. Look for the clock. Accept no substitutes.
