10:51AM "Available for pre-order down, ships on February 24th. Special window for Kindle 1 owners -- if they order midnight tonight, we'll prioritize them."
10:50AM The price: $359.
10:50AM "We're adding some new papers, some new blogs."
10:49AM Bezos is back. "The story is called 'Ur', and like Stephen said, the Kindle in the story has some features we can't pull off."
10:48AM And King is off -- big applause.
10:48AM The pink Kindle exists, a one-off.
10:48AM "Of course, the Kindle in the story does things even 2.0 doesn't do -- it can access other worlds..." Ah. Whoa -- a pink Kindle!
10:44AM Okay look -- the story is basically about how crazy and awesome the Kindle is. So far it's not King's most chilling work.
10:42AM The story actually involves the Kindle. This is pretty weird, Stephen King reading a story written for the Kindle, off of a Kindle, about a Kindle.
10:40AM King is reading from his story, from the new Kindle. Pretty wild.
10:40AM He just called the Kindle's voice "the GPS voice" -- ha!
10:39AM "So this is my new Kindle... and I'm going to read you a piece of the story that I wrote."
10:39AM "The call came in January, and I started the story two days before Obama was inaugurated... and I did get a new Kindle out of it. I said, don't you think I should have one for research?"
10:38AM "So I was thinking about it, and I got a scene in my head -- it's about a young man who teaches english, he's reading a copy of Deliverance, and his girlfriend is upset, but he's ignoring her, finally she blows up and says 'Why can't you read off the computer like the rest of us?!' and I wanted to write that scene..."
10:36AM "I've been a Kindle user, I don't read everything on it, but I read a lot on it. I subscribe to Slate, I can change the font size -- when I said no, I thought 'You're a real ass -- you could have gotten a new Kindle!'"
10:35AM "I got a call from my agent, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a story for the new Kindle... and I said, gee, I don't think so. I don't write stories on demand."
10:34AM "I mentioned earlier, that the Kindle is designed to disappear... well that's what I'm going to do so you can hear from an author." Stephen King is here! Wow!
10:32AM "You'll be able to see it right after this presentation."
10:31AM "The location of the buttons has been really efficient..." Yeah -- a lot of people griped about the old version, and this placement seems way better.
10:31AM "My local newspaper stopped delivering... and I can download it on my Kindle." We have a feeling this will be a story we start hearing a lot more of.

10:27AM It's reading! It actually sounds fairly good -- still very computer-voicey, but totally listenable.
10:27AM The screen seems more responsive... text to speech built in. Any document on the device can be read aloud. That is kind of awesome.
10:26AM He's demo'ing how much you can navigate with the 5-way. It lets you go to sections, preview stories. You can also use it to actually move a cursor through documents for word searches. Nice!
10:23AM Bezos is showing off Whispersync -- on New York Times -- using the new 5-way controller to move through stories.
10:22AM New feature: Whispersync. Read a little on one device, switch devices, read there -- it will keep your page wirelessly. Demo time!

10:20AM Yeah -- this is the exact device we've seen. Minimal, grid keyboard, new button placement, and no slider (boo!).

10:17AM Bezos is detailing what they had to do to make the Kindle compete with actual books. This is similar to the story we've heard before. He's also listing off the ways it's unlike a book (whispernet, dictionary, font size changes)
10:16AM "When we set about designing Kindle, we wanted the book to disappear. When you're reading books, you don't think about the pages or the cover, all your left with is the author's world."
10:15AM "We've gotten thousands of emails from users -- they're not all tech savvy. They're grandparents, parents, kids, travelers, even cat lovers."
10:14AM "More than 10% of the units we sell are Kindle book sales -- that's astonishing. So what happened? 230,000 things happened, and that's Kindle books. Even the best device without selection is useless."
10:14AM "We've been selling ebooks for years, and guess what -- it didn't work... until fourteen months ago." Laughter...
10:13AM "I love the web, I love reading blogs -- but we learn different things from long form and short form. Certain things can only be taught in a few hundred pages." "Long form can teach things that can't be taught any other way. A great book teaches you."
10:12AM "If Gutenberg came back, he would recognize the book. 20 years ago, we had another revolution -- connected devices, computers, mobile devices connected to the internet. These tools are accelerating our ability to read short form."

Amazon.ca still barely sells electronics... The chances of Canadian support for something like Kindle? Zip.
It's like copyright law had a bad date with Canada and now they're not speaking.. we get left in the cold on so many sexy products. Sigh.
Another problem is our monopolized carriers. Not a lot for Amazon to choose from.

I purchased a kindle back in December. The estimated delivery date is late February. I assume this means that they'll be delivering the Kindle 2 to me in a few weeks, right?

I guess that all depends if they are still manufacturing the original Kindle model; if not, then we (I ordered one as well) should be getting the newer version.
Otherwise I will be canceling my current order and pre-ordering a Kindle 2...
I think you will. The original Kindle has been sold out since more than a month before Christmas. I don't think that model is in production anymore nor do I think they have any stock. I think you're getting a Kindle 2.

Tempted to buy one but then I remembered the crap DRM tied into the product.
Nice design Amazon, but I'd rather own resellable / tradeable copies of what I buy.
Most of this was put up on the Amazon site as soon as the press conference started.
Not as cool as being there, though.
Didn't think I'd say this for a few more years, but.... I think I kinda sorta want a Kindle.
Of course the demo's running on a Mac. Keynote is so much better than PowerPoint in terms of graphics, animations, etc. that it's not even funny. Apple needs to make a Windows version!
Been waiting for this and have now finally ordered a Kindle 2. Thanks for the coverage, Engadget, you've made me happy on this otherwise unremarkable Monday.
This is breathtaking, and I'm going to buy a Kindle 2 as soon as I can scrounge the cash, but I do wish Sony or someone would slap an e-ink screen on the front of a Vaio P-sized netbook. Imagine that - you could do your net stuff, or write a document, then close the thing and read it properly!
The one thing that I find interesting here is the newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Looks like this could replace a large pile of paper I have at home. Still not sold on the "book" concept yet as I still like the feel of my paper-based volumes :)

why compare thickness with iphone ?
why they compare ebook reader with the classic books ? espacialy saying that you can carry 1000 books with you.

I hope someone in the crowd asks Jeff why there is no apparent support of folders or tags to help organize your books. It has been the number one wishlist item from Kindle users since the beginning but I don't see anything in the manual about it. :(

Okay, can I still turn off the cell modem when I don't want to use it? Conserves bigtime battery on first version and is a requirement for me to use it in my company facility. Pics of the backside please! Replacing the cheesy plastic cover on back is a nice change, it's metal now yes? Can I still swap batteries?
Speaking of battery, how long can this sit on the shelf before the battery is dead? The older model sucks battery just sitting, is weird! Lay it down for say a week and surprise you have no battery :-( Use it often though and it really does last, longer is nicer.
Why isn't Amazon shipping this one with the nice leather cover like they did the first gen? Why must I spend $30 on a cover that came with my older model? site says no cover... Why do kindle 1 owners have only until midnight tonight to decide on an upgrade? I mean come on!
Any changes to books availability? Newspapers are nice as is Analog but I'd like to see even more books.
Lastly, did they really dump the SD slot? If so that sux! I like having the ability to swap libraries for different tasks and while it's nice that this thing has 1.4gig available for books my SD card is a nice 2gig and swapping takes me maybe a minute.
Lots of good things mentioned but if they have screwed up and hobbled it in other ways this is going to be tough! At least they are shipping backorders with the new model...
So the improvements are:
Better buttons--meh...minor improvement...a small touch panel on the site to swipe up or down for page turns would have been more worthwhile
text to read---i can read myself...but hey thanks
internal memory boost--so what..SD card was more than adequate
joystick---actually seems like nice improvement
whispersync--wtf? i dont understand why this would be useful at all
longer battery life--great--but it doesnt look like i can replace it myself...boooo
what we dont know:
better screen?
Faster processor?
better whispernet battery consumption?
buttons that don't click when you type?
will they ever introduce a social side to the kindle? I would love to share my notes and book recommendations with other kindle users. Integration with a service like goodreads would be fantastic.
are kindle 1.0 users gonna get a software update?
Conclusion--I think users will generally be upset if they cant replace the battery, as will modders looking to open up the case. Otherwise, i dont see any major improvements that make me want to get rid of my kindle 1 in favor of kindle 2.
I don't see any chance the Kindle to made available here in my country (Philippines) at its current form. Book Publishing rights is vary from country to country. When you purchase a Kindle the books and newspapers you buy gets sent to you via EVDO. No monthly data charges or subscription, just the pay for the book. Its all inclusive. Great!
We have CDMA here in Manila, but that is available only thru fixed wireless solutions like wireless landlines (amazingly yes u can bring a mobile landline phone number anywhere as long as you are near cell tower) and internet. Amazon would have to deal with the greedy local Telco Cartel (you can choose a provider but rates all the same).
I wish the Kindle massive success. When it becomes as popular as the iPod. Amazon might make a Kindle for international customers. Something like a Kindle with wifi and usb port. You provide the internet connection and Amazon sells you the book.

Is it me or does the frame around the screen make the device look a lot bigger and the screen a lot smaller?
Bezos is trying to be the new Jobs. Same presentation style; same business model. Interesting that Bezos pitched the educational aspect of books (as opposed to books as entertainment), yet avoids the textbook market.
No price break for Kindle v1 users means I'm sticking with the outrageous buttons and slow page turns for now. All the other new features are evolutionary, not revolutionary. Text-to-voice? Please.
Hmm...looks really cool, but it's too bad they didn't lower the price some. I may be cheap, but for a device that's really a one-trick pony, $359 seems like a lot to justify. I'm not sure what my sweet spot would be for price, but it's definitely lower than that!
Its like a netbook, only crappier... well, at least it costs as much as a netbook, thats a start! 8.9" tablet version of the EeePC coming shortly is better, unless you hate devices that can do more than one thing (isn't that confusing!).
